Started watching it on Amazon Prime last night, I'm hooked already.

Haven't read the books it's based off, which makes a nice change for me!

Anyone else?

No idea about the sexuality of the actors. I think most romantic leads have speculation following them around as it feeds the rabid fangirls publicity monster.

I think he's is a v good Jamie Fraser thankfully. There was the danger of them getting it very wrong.

Redglitter · 21/04/2015 10:05

I've never seen anything in regards to Sams relationships. it's an often asked question in FB groups but noone seems to know. which blog did you see it in
I'd put money on it not being written by him

fatballerina · 21/04/2015 10:54

I'll see if I can find a link-im on my phone at the moment with a 1 year old stuck to me!

fatballerina · 21/04/2015 10:58

Insidetrekker.blogspot.ie-sorry I can't do a clicky link-Diana Gabaldon comments on the article about defending the casting of Sam as Jamie-I actually think he is a perfect Jamie-just how I envisioned him anyway!

Grantaire · 21/04/2015 11:19

That blog is written by a female sci fi fan. It's not Sam Heughan's blog. I did read the article the blog owner wrote defending the casting of Heughan based on Gabaldon's comments on Facebook.

The only reference I can see about his sexuality comes from another blog reader's comment.

It's entirely possible I'm reading the wrong thing however. As you say, he is perfect as Jamie which is the key point. Smile

slalomsuki · 21/04/2015 13:30

I'm slightly ahead of the tv series in the book and aiming to be so. I quite like it being visualised as I go along. I have downloaded the other books and made the mistake of reading the synopsis to book 7 and will no have to definitely read the rest to see how they get to that point.

Casting is quite good but some of the accents are a bit off. They fluctuate between North Scotland, borders and English pronunciation at times.

SenecaFalls · 21/04/2015 13:42

Whose accents, slalomsuki? I'm American, but I have lived in Scotland. I can tell the difference between a Highland accent (Jamie's) and an Edinburgh one (Ned's), but I am not sure about the others.

slalomsuki · 21/04/2015 21:01

Jamie's is fine for a highland accent, ned is more central belt rather than Edinburgh and at that time it's likely he would have spoken "old Scott's" rather than English or Gaelic, the actor playing Murtagh slips out of accent at times and pronounces words with modern English pronunciation at times and some of the others slip in to west coast Scottish.

SenecaFalls · 21/04/2015 21:20

Thanks. The actor playing Murtagh is English but has lived in Ireland for some years. I think several of the actors are from Glasgow so the west coast thing is probably not surprising.

Grantaire · 22/04/2015 11:10

Largely, it's Good Enough as far as accents go. They could have cast Mel Gibson in it after all. Grin "Greetings to you Ned, how is the awesome Edinborow". Now that would have been jarring.

I like Murtagh. He's one of my favourite characters.

SenecaFalls · 22/04/2015 13:51

I like Murtagh, too. I think he's one of the characters who is better in the series than in the book.

SenecaFalls · 25/04/2015 16:02

I just watched Episode 12. Laura Donnelly is really really good as Jenny, I mean really good. The casting on this series is just outstanding.

Pooka · 25/04/2015 18:06

I've loved the series. And have, in the space of a couple of weeks, consumed the books.

I think Jamie is beautifully cast, as are Dougal, murtagh and Rupert. Not so sure about frank/Randall.

I want to wear shawls and other excellent knitwear. I want to be scottish and in a clan. And if Jamie was available, I so would! Oh my god!

I'm wishing the English had lost at culloden.

Grantaire · 25/04/2015 19:00

I try and remind myself that it wasn't as simple as England vs Scotland at Culloden. There were Scottish clans on both sides, some even split up and fought on both sides and in one case there were brothers who fought against each other iirc. At the very least it remains a fact that far more Scots supported and fought on the Hanoverian side than on the Jacobite. It is too often painted as England vs Scotland. I mean, as an English person, I am ashamed of and disgusted by things done in the name of our country and particularly towards the Scottish in this period, but Culloden was a funny old battle.

Regardless, it was a despicable affair. I visited Culloden whilst on honeymoon and found it very moving.

SenecaFalls · 25/04/2015 19:16

At the very least it remains a fact that far more Scots supported and fought on the Hanoverian side than on the Jacobite.

So true, as I know well, being descended from a bunch of Campbells, some of whom, as immigrants to North Carolina, were royalists (or at least neutral) during the American Revolution. It's complicated.

SenecaFalls · 25/04/2015 19:19

It was also very much religion based. The Jacobites were Catholic and Episcopalian. There were very few Presbyterian Jacobites.

Pooka · 25/04/2015 22:16

That's interesting. I'm embarrassed not to know much about that period in history.

I did know about the long lasting impact afterwards - about not being able to carry a weapon, wear tartan and so on.

Lived in Scotland (Glasgow) for 5 years while at university. Often wish I'd stayed after graduation - brilliant city. I regret not having travelled much beyond bute/Arran/St Andrews. But was skint student! I'd love to do a grand tour, up to highlands/islands. One day...

SenecaFalls · 25/04/2015 22:34

I love Glasgow. It's the friendliest city in the UK, in my experience. I went to university in Edinburgh. Love Edinburgh, too. In fact, I pretty much love everything about Scotland (well except for haggis and fried Mars bars). You really do need to do that grand tour, Pooka.

Grantaire · 25/04/2015 22:44

We're moving to West Scotland eventually. Within five years hopefully. I met the nicest, v drunk Scottish man once who said the only people the Scottish hate more than the English, are the Campbells! He was joking. I hope.

I spent my honeymoon in Scotland. We started in Edinburgh and then Stirling and Glasgow and then moved to the west coast, Fort William, Oban etc, then Skye for a while, up to the highlands and islands and then back down the east coast. It was the most amazing time. We're planning a big tour next year with the dc. I've been to a few of the places where Outlander is filmed but am so tempted to go again. And, well, if Jamie Fraser is there shooting a scene, well, you know...

SenecaFalls · 25/04/2015 22:55

He was joking. I hope.

I hope so, too. I have a recognizably Scottish surname, but it's not Campbell. But the DNA and the Argyll antecedents don't lie.

I have a particular fondness for Mull, sparked years ago from having seen the 1940s film, I Know Where I'm Going. On our last visit, I dragged DH and my brother and SIL to all the settings for the movie.

Applecross · 26/04/2015 07:22

Not long back from a trip to glenfinnan, a more beautiful place it is hard to imagine. huge fan of the west coast of Scotland! Am driving dh mad humming outlander theme tune!

Grantaire · 26/04/2015 11:28

Glenfinnan is stunning. The site of the landing of Bonnie Prince Charlie and home of the Hogwarts Express. Grin Did you see any otters?

I've just watched today's episode while the dc did their homework. Jenny is brilliant. I don't know if it seemed a bit rushed though. I wanted a bit more of Jenny and Lallybroch but I think from the end of the episode that it's going to move on pretty quickly now. I think I want Lallybroch to last forever because I know what's next. Sad

Applecross · 26/04/2015 16:25

No otters this time but maybe next time!

cardoon · 26/04/2015 16:27

I come from very near Glenfinnan Smile - can't wait to see episode 12......

VivaLeBeaver · 26/04/2015 16:43

I started watching this yesterday and am hooked big time.
