Old Baldie is back, I'm afraid. However, the format for the first round is a bit different.

Firstly, the contestants are given just one hour and fifteen minutes to dazzle the judges when they are asked to cook their calling card, a practised dish that represents just who they are as a cook and showcases their talent. After tasting all five dishes, John and Gregg, without telling each other, each pick their favourite dish. If they both choose the same dish then they will select their second preference. The two lucky cooks will be safe - for now - and sail straight through to the third test.

The remaining three contestants must cook again in a twist on the infamous invention test - the reinvention test. The hopefuls are given the main ingredient from their calling card dish, as well as access to the larder. Using that same ingredient, they must reinvent the dish to create a brand new plate of food that will sway the judges and earn them a place in the next round. They have one hour and fifteen minutes to cook a dish good enough to keep them in the competition. The stakes are high it's the end of the road for one person after this cook-off, as one of the amateurs will be sent home.

The four remaining cooks now have one more challenge standing between them and a quarter-final place. To earn their place they have to cook an impressive menu that will excite not just John and Gregg but also some very special guests. Once again, some of the competition's most inspiring winners and finalists return to judge the food of this year's new contenders to the throne.

In tonight's heat the contestants must attempt to impress three MasterChef Champions - 2009 champion Mat Follas, 2010 champion Dhruv Baker and 2012 champion Shelina Permalloo are back to give their verdict.

After the four hopefuls have cooked, John and Gregg will decide which two will take the next step in the competition and go through to Friday's quarter-final.

There was a man years ago who fried a pork chop and poured a jar of sauce over it.

Roussette · 27/03/2015 07:49

Gasp that is absolutely hilarious, I am PMSL. Love it...! Grin

GrouchyKiwi · 27/03/2015 09:15

I wanted to stage an intervention for fishy soufflé/phlegm on a plate woman.

squoosh · 27/03/2015 11:27

Delighted that over confident Scots man being shown the door. Nothing I like more than someone with confidence in their abilities being cut down to size.

This isn't America chum. Keep your eyes cast downwards, tremble and whisper that you're not sure you've done enough.

Ellenora5 · 27/03/2015 20:14

I'm only catching up but I can say the best thing about last nights show was this thread Grin

Roussette · 27/03/2015 20:28

squoosh · 27/03/2015 20:30

I'm here too!

squoosh · 27/03/2015 20:32

I think I like Fran best. I can imagine her as captain of a ladies darts team. She'd have her own tankard behind the bar.

Roussette · 27/03/2015 20:32

Oh it's Fran I like I think

Hiya Squoosh !

Roussette · 27/03/2015 20:33

Gosh the restaurant critic is a bit of a Billy Bunter isn't he... I think he enjoys the tasting Grin

squoosh · 27/03/2015 20:34

Charles eats three course meals for a living. You think he'd be a bit cheerier.

Roussette · 27/03/2015 20:36

I loved the sound of steak and ale pie until I heard it was beef cheek bleurghhhhh

Halsall · 27/03/2015 20:36

Me too!

Roussette · 27/03/2015 20:36

C'mon Fran!

squoosh · 27/03/2015 20:38

I don't particularly hate any of them. I like to have someone to hate!

Roussette · 27/03/2015 20:38

Lord alive. Beef cheek pie is in green pastry.

squoosh · 27/03/2015 20:38

I can't imagine Charles gets that many 'wow's when he walks in the room.

GrouchyKiwi · 27/03/2015 20:39

I like Paul and Fran. Ella's too cocky and Laura (?) too brash.

Roussette · 27/03/2015 20:40

Charles is very strange indeedy! Grin

Roussette · 27/03/2015 20:41

Totally agree Grouchy

squoosh · 27/03/2015 20:41

I quite like Laura. Ella's a bit too wide eyed and 'little old me?'

GrouchyKiwi · 27/03/2015 20:41

I want fish pie now. Proper fish pie, not that guff.

Halsall · 27/03/2015 20:42

Thirded, Grouchy and Roussette
