Is anyone else looking forward to this? It is going to be shown on Sunday nights once the present series of 'Call the Midwife' has finished.

I loved the original series even though the story did stray from the books a bit. I wonder how this one will go. I understand Robin Ellis has a bit part in the new version as the Reverend Halse.

Actually Verity was meant to be plain. But I still think the 1970s actress captured her better.

'Taint right , taint proper!
Just marking place. Enjoying the thread. Can't wait a whole week .

Oh dear Angelto5 the sacrifices we parents make - oh well, needs must!

LumpySpacedPrincess · 09/03/2015 19:08

Loved it and I am a huge fan of the original series and the books. Dh thought it should have been a bit bleaker but I think he is remembering the original series.

IrenetheQuaint · 09/03/2015 19:10

Yes, George is too good-looking and aristocratic, and Francis is too plain and stolid - they would have worked better swapped over.

Demelza casting is really tricky given that she has to age from 13 to 17 in an episode or two, but really with that tumbling red hair it's impossible not to imagine Ross thinking lustful thoughts about her straightaway. Would have been better to give her a short grubby wig for the first episode, at least.

Loved the books and the original. Loved last night too. The characters do seem 'softer' somehow - certainly Elizabeth. I thought Francis seemed more appealing than the wimpy chap in the original - but maybe that's just my memory!

How long does it clash with Mr. Selfridge for?

Darkforcesatwork · 09/03/2015 19:46

Tuned in to see our local Yorkshire stars-the horses and stunt doubles! Good old sturdy Seamus careering round the beautiful Cornish countryside. Grin

Iflyaway · 09/03/2015 20:08

I'm loving it too old to remember the original lol

Wonderful beautiful British drama that I am so thankful for we get the BBC here in Europe! and yes, a bore we can't do Iplayer Smile

Travelledtheworld · 09/03/2015 20:26

Honest Darkforces they shipped the horses from Yorkshire to Cornwall to make this ? Do the horses and the stunt men come together ?

LouiseBrooks · 09/03/2015 20:42

I thought it wasn't bad at all, darn sight better than most of the tosh on tv these days.

No, AT isn't a patch on Robin Ellis who was born to play Ross IMO but he was good enough and he's certainly gorgeous. Demelza was good, much better than she was in TWQ and Elizabeth was a bit more appealling than the boring blonde in the original, and I thought Beatie Edney was great at Prudie.

RufusTheReindeer · 09/03/2015 20:44

Enjoyed it very much

Only really watching because of Mitchell...sorry Aidan!!

But I'll keep watching as I was engrossed

Travelledtheworld · 09/03/2015 21:05

I loved AT as Mitchell too. I had been living overseas and came back to the UK knowing nothing about it ? I switched on the TV and there was an episode of Being Human on. I watched it out of curiosity and was hooked. It was so quirky and funny with an undercurrent of menace.

And I loved all those Welsh sea front shots.

I also adiored Damien Moloney as Prince Hal and was quite obsessed with him for a while .

ManyHatsOn · 09/03/2015 21:16

Oh God I'm still PHWOARing 24 hours later. I watched Being Human for years, and Desperate Romantics and The Hobbit(s) but NEVER has he been SO VERY well coiffed, costumed, makeup-ed, lit and shot. Perfect casting. Somebody stop me thinking about him it please...

Alibabsandthe40Musketeers · 09/03/2015 21:48

I have just ordered the DVD of Desperate Romantics...

RufusTheReindeer · 09/03/2015 21:50

travelled

My friend and I had many discussions over which vamp was best for a relationship, loved Hal but bad Hal was awesome. Mitchell was the best but Hal would do the housework....decisions, decisions

many

Shock why would you want to stop

Lara2 · 09/03/2015 21:50

I loved it - big Aidan fan ( who isn't?). My mum was a huge Poldark fan and would have absolutely loved this version.

snozzlemaid · 09/03/2015 22:07

Have I mentioned before that I met Aidan Turner when they were filming Poldark.
He was dressed in full Ross Poldark costume (including tricorn) and I spoke to him and got his autograph. I stood right next to him on the scar side - he is beautiful and the nicest man ever. He was only too happy to chat and was so polite.

wigglesrock · 09/03/2015 22:08

I enjoyed it too, just watched it on catch up. Wasn't really expecting to, my mum waxed lyrical about the original. I don't really know Aidan Turner much (I hate the Hobbit films), but he has that cruel mouth thing that I'm quite partial to.

TheFnozwhowasmirage · 09/03/2015 22:12

My mum and I were discussing this today. I preferred the 1970's Elizabeth and thought the new one looked too modern and over made up. My mum thought that the original Elizabeth was too prissy and the new one better. We both liked Aidan Turner though.

Dh and I both agreed that it wasn't Cornwall how we remembered it,we've had 3 separate holidays there and in all that time, only had 1 day when it didn't rain. In our house 'Cornish weather' means a deluge.

RockMummy · 09/03/2015 22:17

For me the weather was wrong too. In the original it was quite often grey (not just because I watched it in 1975 in black and white!) and the coast was more rocky and barren. Hope they continue with it as there are about 12 or 13 books in total.

AWholeLottaNosy · 09/03/2015 22:21

I used to have a boyfriend who looked quite a bit like AT ( sadly he had issues ...)

I was also at Uni with the actor who played Demelza's dad. You wouldn't think it now but he was super good looking then!

Travelledtheworld · 09/03/2015 22:49

Rufus LOL.
Good Hal would have been ever so polite and courteous wouldn't he? And definitely would do the housework. But very slightly weird and you would keep him indoors.

Mitchell would be < whispers> ever so dirty, and would impress your friends on a night out.

Both very yummy and good to fantasise.......

Darkforcesatwork · 10/03/2015 00:09

Yes Travelled! Excellent local family business who do ridden (and non ridden) stunt work all over the UK-jousting, acrobatics, re-enactments. They are a really talented bunch and exceptional horsemen (and women!). Horses are so well trained! Ross Poldark's horse was also the star of Jamaica Inn. Aiden apparently spent a few days up here getting to know the horses and finding the one he gelled with most.

mammuzzamia · 10/03/2015 00:32

I've just watched. I think I liked it, but feel at a slight disadvantage because I haven't read anything, or seen earlier versions to compare it to (I might remedy that).
