Is anyone else looking forward to this? It is going to be shown on Sunday nights once the present series of 'Call the Midwife' has finished.

I loved the original series even though the story did stray from the books a bit. I wonder how this one will go. I understand Robin Ellis has a bit part in the new version as the Reverend Halse.

Demelza is a bit gapey and lumbering. I agree RE has more presence. where are Dwight and Ginny Carter or is it too soon.

IrenetheQuaint · 16/03/2015 21:40

Dwight only appears in book 2, after Ross and Demelza are married. Can't remember about Ginny Carter!

woodhill · 16/03/2015 21:43

doesn't Jim escape to France.

choccyp1g · 16/03/2015 21:45

Someone up thread said AT looks a bit rodenty. It took me the whole first episode to work out who he reminds me of.......a certain Spanish tennis player.

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 16/03/2015 21:51

Doesn't Ginny work at Nampara after a while - when Demelza has the baby maybe?

I think the Carters might be Ross's favourite tenants. His involvement with all of them (nice & nasty...) is one of the most interesting parts of the books but will have to be skimmed over on TV

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 16/03/2015 21:56

I agree about AT's pointyness Grin

woodhill · 16/03/2015 21:57

I think I may re read the books

Dumbledoresgirl · 16/03/2015 22:03

If you go by the original series, Ginny first appeared in ep 2 or 3. Dwight, not until ep 4, I think (I have recently rewatched eps 1-3).

The first 2 eps of the modern series have more or less kept pace with the original series. Ep 2 (original) finished with the duel.

Dumbledoresgirl · 16/03/2015 22:04

Woodhill - not Jim. The blessed Mark Daniel.

woodhill · 16/03/2015 22:06

yes Jim went to Launceston jail, it's coming back

AnneEyhtMeyer · 16/03/2015 22:06

I'm enjoying it so far, but the main jarring issue is the constant sunshine. It rained every day I was in Cornwall, so I look at the sunshine and it is the least convincing thing in the series.

Dumbledoresgirl · 16/03/2015 22:15

It was all cloudy and thunder rumbly for the duel last night. A bit heavy handed with the symbolism imo.

Also, I'm sorry you had a bad experience weather-wise in Cornwall. I'm there at least 3 times a year - sometimes more - and invariably ime, as you drive over Dartmoor and Bodmin Moor, the sun comes out! I think of Cornwall sticking out from the cloud that covers the rest of Britain, rather like a leg sticking out from a blanket. Smile Even wet, grey days invariably have sunny early mornings and a beautiful sunset. Sorry I love Cornwall.

MirandaGoshawk · 16/03/2015 22:17

Pixel the scar is very authentic apparently - black gunpowder would have been rubbed into it on the battlefield to stop it getting infected (according to the Telegraph).

I like it. I like the characters, especially Rossand all his gallopping and skinny-dipping. yes please.

But pleease don't give away spoilers without warning! (see above, or rather, don't.) Some of us don't know the story. Thank you.

Twinklestein · 16/03/2015 22:20

The countryside is basically what I sat through hours of Jamaica Inn for to discover it was filmed in Yorkshire wtf.

That actress, ex DA bird, would have made a better Dem.

Twinklestein · 16/03/2015 22:22

Frankly anyone would at this point, her only plus is the beautiful colour of her hair.

Dumbledoresgirl · 16/03/2015 22:27

Miranda - apologies. I am trying not to give anything away but occasionally someone who clearly knows the stories makes a comment and I reply without thinking. I will try to limit my comments from now on.

BrightBlowsTheBroom · 16/03/2015 22:41

And yes, Demelza needs to shut her mouth. I'm a simple country girl myself but I don't stand around looking vacant with my gob open.

Oh yes so true.

I'm loving it but just because of AT and the costumes . French and Saunders will demolish it. They demolished Lord of The Rings and Gone with the Wind, this one they could do in their sleep.

Apologies to any one who is American but Elizabeth looks as if she has wandered in from the wrong continent and the wrong century- despite the costume she looks like a modern American woman.

Will they have Drake and Morwenna ? They were so sweet, I was rooting for them. I was stunned to find out googling them recently they were Kevin McNally and the first Mrs Barnaby.

FancyFancy · 16/03/2015 22:48

I thought you might like certain parts of that episode comtess Grin

I might have had to rewind the waking up in linen shirt scene. Which is followed by the skinny dipping scene. I doubt that surprises you.

Pixel · 16/03/2015 23:56

Well maybe so but would it be completely smooth like that? I'd expect a bit of scar tissue or something .

We went to Cornwall last summer, the first time since I was a child. It didn't rain all the time but we didn't get any beach weather, and one night we had water running through our tent awning and had to wade ankle deep to get to the toilets!
It was all still as beautiful as I remembered though and I did remark that rugged coastlines look better in rough weather Smile. We will go back, but oh, such a long drive! Not sure when I will be able to face it again. Maybe when dd can share the driving Grin.

Eliza22 · 17/03/2015 08:59

Elizabeth looks like a horse. That's exactly what I thought. I'd choose Demelza (with gob shut) over her.

NorahDentressangle · 17/03/2015 09:06

Elizabeth is beautiful, but is well acted so comes over as a bit selfish and flighty with her dithering which turns you against her.

Surely no way could she live in Ross's hovel of a home anyway, it's not in the style to which she is accustomed.

Though I would have roughed it there if someone had twisted my arm Smile

woodhill · 17/03/2015 09:20

I love Cornwall too and could happily go there year after year but Dh and ds moan about the weather and the cost of the accommodation etc in the Summer and want to go abroad

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 17/03/2015 10:20

I read somewhere that the production team were a bit disappointed with the endless glorious weather - they needed a bit of drizzle & murk Grin

Pixel, I agree about the smoothness of the 'scar' - that's why it looks drawn on. It should surely either have puckered edges or be a bit sunken

TillyButton · 17/03/2015 10:21

I just love Damelza's dog!

OnlyLovers · 17/03/2015 11:23

I've only watched the first one so haven't read recent posts properly for fear of spoilers.

But Aiden is on good, er, form, isn't he? Hubba hubba, oooooh young maaaaaan etc. I read once that he was Irish Latin and ballroom dance champion in his youth. Imagine doing a rumba or a smouldering tango with him.

I agree about the scar though. Scrawled on with pen. Do it again, make-up team.
