Is anyone else looking forward to this? It is going to be shown on Sunday nights once the present series of 'Call the Midwife' has finished.

I loved the original series even though the story did stray from the books a bit. I wonder how this one will go. I understand Robin Ellis has a bit part in the new version as the Reverend Halse.

Blamey is not absolved of guilt but claims the killing was unintentional. He was supposed to be drunk - he had an alcohol problem which he is now curbing. He served time in prison and was demoted in the navy. The Poldarks research him when they see the way things are going between him and Verity and discover his past, but Verity doesn't mind because she luffs him and he told her all about it already (though I didn't think it realistic he would tell her the very night he meets her!)

Travelledtheworld · 15/03/2015 22:30

Delicious, delicious AT.
Naked in a clear sea.
I also think Verity is deliberately playing gormless as a contrast to the beautiful woman she will no doubt grow into.
And I do love a good dual! Actually this one was crap, no sense of anticipation, but you know what I mean.

Twinklestein · 15/03/2015 22:33

I don't think D is gorgeous at all I think she's rather unfortunate looking. And ratty rather than feisty.

thenightsky · 15/03/2015 22:40

Agree that D is gormless.

Lovelise · 15/03/2015 22:46

Well I enjoyed it. I can't wait for the relationship between Ross & Dem to mature. Also the simmering hatred between Ross & George W.

The original will always have a special place in my heart but I need to give this new version a chance.

I do think the original Ross had more of a dominating presence.

Is AT TOO handsome?

Snowstorm · 15/03/2015 22:51

Phwoooooooar at AT ... absolutely flaming gorgeous ... ...

Twinklestein · 15/03/2015 23:03

I don't think AT is too handsome, in fact he's rather rodenty. But he's a good actor so that makes up for it.

Fontella · 15/03/2015 23:06

I'll be honest ... I can't take my eyes off him.

I don't really give a shit about the rest of it - just him.

I concur with Snowstorm

Phwoooooooar at AT ... absolutely flaming gorgeous ... ...

BrightBlowsTheBroom · 15/03/2015 23:29

I don't think I'd watch it if AT wasn't in it.

Sunnymeg · 16/03/2015 07:43

I think that if the producer wanted Demelza to be portrayed this way, then he should have used a younger actress. All we are seeing at the moment is her going from being a drudge for her family to being a paid drudge for Poldark. There is no backbone to her and nothing yet in her character that is going to make her a match for Ross. I also agree with the comments about Verity and Capt. Blamey's story being too rushed. I wonder how much we are going to see of other characters and whether we are going to get the time invested in them so we actually care about them.

"I don't think D is gorgeous at all"

I'm glad that I'm not the only one!

I think that she's very plain but with gorgeous hair!

Dumbledoresgirl · 16/03/2015 08:28

I do think AT is the best thing about this new production and I am not particularly referring to his looks/body when I say that. He sits very pleasantly in the role.

I agree with Lovelise though: Robin Ellis had a far more dominating presence and that was where the phwoar factor came in with him. The show is called Poldark and you had no doubt who the Poldark in question was - this feels a bit more like it should be called 'The Poldarks' iyswim. Also, RE had that voice, and his character felt more grown up and in charge.

Another gripe about last night: Jim Carter calling him Ross. Just no! I'm glad it swapped to 'sir' once he was actually working for him.

BMW6 · 16/03/2015 08:35

Am enjoying it so far - apart from the bizarre open-mouth gormless expression on Demelza's clob, and the vivid pink/purple lipstick on Elizabeth!

Sadly I started to laugh when shot no. 25 of Ross galloping along cliff was shown.....too obvious "Visit Beautifull Cornwall". I am now going to count gallopy scenes for each episode. Grin

Eliza22 · 16/03/2015 08:36

Robin Ellis was a Shakespearean actor for many years. Yes, the voice alone gave the role "heft". And he just had a grown man presence that filled the screen. Aiden is very 'now' but not Poldark, not for me. No swooning here, I'm afraid.

MorrisZapp · 16/03/2015 08:42

I'm reading the books just now and I'm picturing Ross as the handsome fellow from Death Comes to Pemberley. He had a genuine adult charisma about him.

AT is very attractive too but his hair looks like a little boy's, and he does lack a bit of stature.

OttiliaVonBCup · 16/03/2015 09:01

I'm glad most of you seem to agree with the gormless bit.

Even when she was supposed to be perving over the swimming scene she looked it.

Dumbledoresgirl · 16/03/2015 09:06

Yes we should have a drinking game: one drink every time Ross gallops along the cliff, another every time Demelza does her gormless look, what else?

And yes re child-like hair on AT! I like his hair, but it isn't right for the part. It makes him look more like Heathcliff.

Ladytron · 16/03/2015 09:25

I just hope he hasn't caught the pox after his one-night stand...

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 16/03/2015 09:59

Angharad Rees was 26 when they made Poldark I - she just looked a lot younger (& was very short & slight)

I can't remember how fast things happened in that. I may have to buy the box set Grin

Fontella · 16/03/2015 10:00

I must admit the galloping back and forth along the cliff edge every few minutes is starting to look a bit naff - just two episodes in.

It reminds me of the sort of thing French and Saunders would have done back in the day when they were doing their 'spoof' sketches.

I wonder how many more cliff edge gallops we'll see before the end of this series?

MorrisZapp · 16/03/2015 10:12

26? Having just youtubed the old series, I thought she looked about 40, as did Ross. At least Demelza in this one actually looks truly young.

Great show on YouTube btw, called The Cult of Poldark, complete with interviews of the cast as they are now, and gossip aplenty.

I much prefer the modern series. Feels so much more spacious and real. Seventies drama was mostly studio bound and tends to look like Acorn Antiques. I know it was brilliant for its time though. Robin Ellis has an amazing voice, it has aged like a fine wine :)

EauPea · 16/03/2015 10:27

So who's up for a nit of stalking in September, Snozzlemaid you in?

The galloping back and forth shots along the cliff top were partly filmed on a relatives farm near Porthcothan. I suddenly feel the need to spent late summer with said rellie Grin

mistymeanour · 16/03/2015 10:50

I recall RE in the original, lifting Judd by the seat of hos pants and throwing him in the mud - it became a catchphrase and thing to do amongst the kids on my street in the 70's.

When AT told Judd to get out of the room and that he would thrash hom later I didn't believe it but with Robin Ellis I would have - I agree with the others he did have more stature.

It rankles a bit though that Ross is so nice and good and kind from an an old toff family but the noveau riche, originally working class Warleggan's are scheming nasties. Hmm

loveareadingthanks · 16/03/2015 11:44

I'm a bit confused about who Francis and George are. I thought they were one character for ages.

DP ruined the letching swimming scene by casually commenting 'he's doing that to wash off the knob-rot from the prostitute'.

ChoochiWhoo · 16/03/2015 11:48

Just started watching...to young to have seen the original, im not going to lie im just watching to stare at aidan turner for an hour.
