Is anyone else looking forward to this? It is going to be shown on Sunday nights once the present series of 'Call the Midwife' has finished.

I loved the original series even though the story did stray from the books a bit. I wonder how this one will go. I understand Robin Ellis has a bit part in the new version as the Reverend Halse.

I love this thread Grin

Thanks to you lot I keep imagining my dh dressed in Poldark attire! He would look fabulous as he has long hair & a beard!

Did anyone else squirm when Francis was practically begging Elizabeth to marry him(even shedding a tear-the wimp) & did this also happen in the original?

Dumbledoresgirl · 15/03/2015 10:41

You don't see him begging in the original Angel. It is all done a bit differently. There is a scene where Ross surprises Francis, Verity and Charles (as in this version) but Elizabeth is not there and they do not tell Ross that Francis is engaged to Elizabeth though they talk about it after Ross has left, and you see Francis looking very insecure and worried. Francis leaves to go to Elizabeth.

Then you see Ross surprising Elizabeth only she is not surprised because Francis has already been and warned her that Ross is alive and back home. She then tells Ross that she is engaged to Francis.

So it is done differently, and you don't see Francis and Elizabeth together alone until after they are married, but yes, Francis is very insecure when it comes to Elizabeth and Ross.

I tried not to like it but I couldn't help it.

The Brontes would have liked Aidan Turner, he's right up their street.

The problem for me is that the actress who plays Elizabeth is stunning and has great screen presence, but the Demelza actress, not only cannot match her for beauty, but has very little screen charisma and is rather limp. Thus far she's going to feel very much second best, which I can't imagine is the point of the book.

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 15/03/2015 11:41

She's being a downtrodden little servant girl type at the moment though, in her peasant sack dress, & she's supposed to be still very young.
The contest livens up more later on (although of course Ross is in love with E until the day she dies. & beyond)

Sunnymeg · 15/03/2015 12:11

Looking forward to seeing Richard Harrington as Capt. Blamey tonight. I do wonder who will be cast as Osborne Whitworth if we get that far. Christopher Biggins was seriously creepy!!

I think that is the point Twinkle. At many points during the story Demelza does feel very much second best to Elizabeth. But I'm sure she will blossom into a beauty from the downtrodden young thing she is at the moment.
The thing I'm looking forward to most is the building relationship between Ross and Demelza.

Travelledtheworld · 15/03/2015 13:35

Felt very gloomy his morning. Hard week, no Mothers Day breakfast in bed.
Sad then I remembered tonight is Poldark ! YAY Grin

Eliza22 · 15/03/2015 15:21

I think Demelza has a wild, untamed beauty...or will. She's the polar opposite of the cool, restrained Elizabeth. I think she'll blossom!

The80sweregreat · 15/03/2015 21:09

He would make a fab Heathcliff ..

The80sweregreat · 15/03/2015 21:11

These days Elizabeth would dump husband b text, employ a divorce lawyer and run off with hunky Poldark.

specialmagiclady · 15/03/2015 21:12

Coming in at ep 2 - don't have a clue what's happening. But while Aiden Turner is leaning out of windows in a tight jerkin, I'm in.

Fwwwwwwwoooooooooooooaaaaaaarrrr! I have come over all unnecessary.

The80sweregreat · 15/03/2015 21:13

Yeah, is there an actual plot?

specialmagiclady · 15/03/2015 21:17

Who cares.

BrightBlowsTheBroom · 15/03/2015 21:26

Demelza is awful. I suppose the point is she will bloom out of her down trodden state but she's still coming across as village idiot.

BrightBlowsTheBroom · 15/03/2015 21:27

Elizabeth is a vapid robot. The prostitute in the tavern was far prettier and more interesting.

squoosh · 15/03/2015 21:28

The tavern wench's makeup was a bit ott.

The80sweregreat · 15/03/2015 21:31

One service is all i need. The cad.

squoosh · 15/03/2015 21:31

Oh hello!

The80sweregreat · 15/03/2015 21:32

Ohhh, needed a longer lens there.

Sazzle41 · 15/03/2015 21:33

I am with you special.. (perves/drools slightly) no idea re plot except the heaving bosoms & fans going 10 to dozen does Dangerous Liaisons credit.. Sighs happily.

And yes 80sweregreat he'd be a bloody amazing Heathcliff.... talk about brooding eye candy....

Demelza kind of disapointing if you remember how Angharad Rees did the role. (feisty pert little redhead you could imagine giving Ross a run for his money bedroom wise). Maybe she will improve.

The80sweregreat · 15/03/2015 21:35

I still have no idea whats going on. Lots of horse riding .. Lingering looks. Cornwall, it just rained everyday when i went there in 2008,,

MajesticWhine · 15/03/2015 21:36

DH is offended by the blatant objectification of Poldark's physical self when swimming. Yawn.

specialmagiclady · 15/03/2015 21:37

Mmmmm.. Swarthy....

AlPacinosHooHaa · 15/03/2015 21:38

Thanks to you lot I keep imagining my dh dressed in Poldark attire

His jacket today is a particularly beautiful colour and the wasitcoat is amazing. yes DH would look so beautiful in this get up.

It would do many men a great many favours.

If I was PM I would make it a law all men had to dress like this.

I would even vote for Ed if he promised to decree this.

Not keen on Elizabeth, she is awful, I think Dem has great potential however.

AlPacinosHooHaa · 15/03/2015 21:40

Well well well, at long long last some decent - proper and true eye candy. at long long last.
