The other thread was full and people still seem pretty pissed off about the whole series, so I thought we'd better have another thread to moan about it Grin

Previous thread.

Jolly good. We are not done yet ITV.

You would have thought they would have noticed the new floor wouldn't you? And taken it up and looked underneath and got some forensics?

It's the first thing they do, go through the houses and look under floors. Plus there would have been traces of blood all over the walls etc.

Not impressed with this at all tbh. It just kind of glibly floats over any semblance of realism, any requirements to make it plausible.

Lot of hype and little substance.

hackmum · 24/02/2015 09:23

When I look back on Broadchurch 2, it's the Mumsnet threads I'll remember rather than the series, most particularly: the discussions about Lee's fence-building; BOFster's always amusing commentary; the repeated question of "Where's Fred?" inevitably followed, a few posts later by "Who's Fred?"; the people who insisted that the killer was really Tom Miller/Rev Rory/someone else, followed by the exasperated comment "We KNOW it was Joe Miller" (repeat ad nauseam); and, of course, the still unresolved mystery of the laminate flooring.

Fiderer · 24/02/2015 09:52

I think I've become immune to Broadchurch toshery as I enjoyed that more than I expected to and all the procedural/legal/heh really? inconsistencies didn't really bother me. Plus it was so obvious that Joe would be found not guilty.

Would have loved Joe to have been chucked off the cliff and his death taken as suicide and an admission of guilt. All those involved would have had a great alibi with Rev Rory saying that Joe came to him in the church and pleaded to meet everyone at the little house so he arranged it and after confessing Joe ran out and flung himself off the cliff.

As for Sandbrook, although a decent forensics and detective team would have determined that Lee didn't kill Lisa, I suppose the point was that people do panic and those like Claire do act to protect others and themselves but there'd have been no mystery and no anguished Hardy if they hadn't.

Am setting my sights a lot lower for S3 than I did for S2 Grin

DopeyDawg · 24/02/2015 09:52

Hugely disappointing ending to hugely disappointing, cliché riddled series 2.

ITV - 'must try harder' -

hackmum - yes, threads MUCH more amusing than actual tv show.

MN should write Series 3 as I'll die of boredom if it is about Sandbrook trial / Barristers sons trial....

DopeyDawg · 24/02/2015 09:55

I agree Fiderer that the whole panic about the death of girl one leading to death of girl 2 (this is how much I now care!) is believable at a stretch as people do do stupid things in panic - that is the point.

But VERY SAD they missed chance of Broadchurch Mob pushing Joe off cliff as 'suicide' and then breaking out the lashings of ginger beer and pork pies around his body for Celebratory Picnic.

WheresFred · 24/02/2015 10:05

I found the whole series so frustrating and dragging. For what reason did they bring Pauline Quirke's character back? What's Joe doing in Sheffield?
Why was Lee always standing in a field at the exact right moment?

Hope Series 3 doesn't involve any more terrible court scenes. Love love love Olivia Coleman though Smile.

APlaceInTheWinter · 24/02/2015 10:56

At least for series 3, Hardy is back to being dynamic and angry rather than mopey, ill and pale I'm not the caring, nursing type can you tell?

I actually enjoyed Joe being found not guilty and hounded out of town. The whole idea of the community deciding his fate was quite fitting I thought, and I liked Rev Rory taking charge of it all. It also seemed quite apt with all the Thomas Hardy references to go back to a more traditional method of justice iyswim

However, I think we should start writing Broadchurch 3. How hard could it be?

SCENE ONE: party at the beach. Hardy with his buttoned up top button walks up to Ellie and says: 'I've come for my hug. I'm not leaving. I'm staying here to look after you and Tom and Fred. It's always been you Ellie. You don't know what an orange parka can do to a man!'
Pauline Quirk turns up with her dog which has an old diary in his mouth.
PQ: He dug up this old diary at the bottom of one of them fence posts on the hill.
It's Lee's diary where he admits he didn't kill Pippa. It was Claire and the incriminating cushion is buried under fence post 4. Cue Lee getting released. Claire being put bang to rights. Alcoholic Kate moving to Broadchurch and shacking up with Nige because she likes a handy man. THE END.

MissM · 24/02/2015 10:57

Hackmum - yep, will miss this thread more than the series! They've defined it for me (and provided more laughs).

I felt sorry for the actor playing Joe. He spent the entire series sitting in a glass box saying nothing, then had ten minutes of glory where his only lines pretty much were 'I was found not guilty', 'Help me', 'No!', and 'You can't banish me!' (possibly the most dubious line of the series after 'Do you like bluebells?') Bet he got paid loads less than all the others.

AuntieMaggie · 24/02/2015 11:01

APlaceInTheWinter genius Grin

I think it was obvious that he was going to be found not guilty and they could've just focused on Sandbrook instead for this series.

MissM · 24/02/2015 11:09

Loling at PlaceintheWinter Although you forgot this bit:

Final scene: Lee stares out over the sea before taking off his top and turning to bang a new fence post into the hole where Fence post 4 once stood. Sun sets behind him silhouetting his torso.
THE END.

APlaceInTheWinter · 24/02/2015 11:12

MissM yy perfect ending. They could emblazon that image on t-shirts and sell them at a premium discounted rate to MNers Grin

Ceic · 24/02/2015 11:13

Thanks for the new thread. I agree with hackmum that these threads have been better than the show!

I think there are still some outstanding issues for BC3:

  • Ricky said something about a vicar helping him hide Lisa's body in a grave - could that vicar be Rev Rory? Is that his guilty secret?
  • What happened with Lee and Kate's flirty glances? Did she visit him in France when she popped over on a booze cruise?
  • I though Joe looked angry when OC told him he'd have no access to see his kids. I doubt we've seen the last of him.

I think BC3 will be the opposite of BC2 in that the court room will be Sandbrook while OC and DT's new hobby will be re-examining BC1 evidence.

Angelto5 · 24/02/2015 11:40

About the question of forensics searching lee & Claire's house, I thought it was only the Gillespie's house that was checked as the girls were believed to have gone missing from there?

VeronicaCaCa · 24/02/2015 11:54

I kept thinking that if the Sandbrook case had been an episode of Silent Witness it would have been easily sorted in 2hrs. Lee and Jack could have had a naked mud wrestle fight (shirts off) and Nicky would have looked earnest yet fabulous and solved the laminate floor/bluebell/rohypnol clues with time to spare for mild flirtation with DT.

ScrambledSmegs · 24/02/2015 12:05

Proof that either DT is being paid shitloads for this, or he is massively deluded about the quality of series 2.

Broadchurch series 3

"So, inevitably there was going to be a certain amount of 'it's not as good as the first time'. I think it is. I think it's a wonderful series that I'm very proud to be part of."

Liar liar pants on fire.

I can't remember if the cast watched a final edit or not. If you had only acted in it and not seen how the story was edited together then I think you could have a different impression of it.

I do think most of the cast were superb but the plotting let them down Sad It's why I know I'll watch BC3 as it's worth the nonsense to see DT, OC, JW and the others.

Angelto5 · 24/02/2015 12:16

I agree jellyhead.
I also love father brown (& dr Blake). I really wasn't expecting all three of the Sandbrook suspects to be guilty.
I am easily pleased as long as there is a sense of justice in the end!

What I love about father brown is the detective thinks he's interfering. Grin
Yet he always catches the killer. My favourite is the bad boy chauffeur of lady felicia ,Sid.

MissM · 24/02/2015 12:17

Yeah but DT has to say that doesn't he - he's part of the marketing machine. It's like film stars doing interviews to promote their latest film and saying how fantastic it is, when it turns out to be utter shite.

I heard an interview with DT before series 2 began (and there was so much innocent excitement), and he said they hadn't seen the final edit and he'd be watching along with everyone else. Bet he sat there every Monday night going 'Shit. What the hell have I signed up for?'

AnnieHoo · 24/02/2015 12:18

Love your work PlaceintheWinter and good co-writing from MissM Grin

Behindthepaintedgarden · 24/02/2015 12:52

The ending was ridiculous. Them all standing on a hill like characters out of a western running the baddie out of town.

And then the saccharine scene on the beach Sad

Toomanyworriedsonhere · 24/02/2015 12:59

Thank goodness MissM - I was worried there'd be none of that!

If I'm co-writing the script Toomanyworrieds there will be plenty of that! Wink

Northernexile · 24/02/2015 15:17

I have been reading the thread, agreeing with most of the comments (though don't find Hardy or sweaty Lee particularly attractive!).

Another thing about the ending that I though was particularly unbelievable was Beth and Ellie suddenly being best mates again, even though Ellie beating Joe up was the reason for the confession not being allowed and basically the reason he wasn't convicted.
