So frustrating watching this - surely some of this parenting falls into the neglect category?

OP posts:
HelenaDove · 18/02/2015 23:11

YY BMO the only fruit i eat is strawberries and blueberries.
Doctor told me not to eat citrus fruit because it goves me colic and diarrheoa.

I eat loads of veg though broccoli cauliflower cabbage carrots etc.

ghostspirit · 18/02/2015 23:11

eve very true. hes not as bad as he used to be the aguments we used to have over it but not so bad now.

i always have fruit in my house as well :)

im watching it on plus 1 now. i agree about the jacket potatoe portion she only needed half of that.

Mrsteddyruxpin · 18/02/2015 23:12

I missed the last few minutes. Was there any outcome/follow up.

ghostspirit · 18/02/2015 23:15

bmo yeah veg is better. for over weight children and teeth. but also i should think its better to give fruit than say a mars bar or bag of crisps...

NaiceVillageOfTheDammed · 18/02/2015 23:15

To all the clinicians reading this thread - a genuine question.

Why can't you apportion blame to the parent (where appropriate)?

Is it the carrot not stick method to effect positive change?
I'd be out of a job Monday afternoon!

Seriously, if I'd had Tallulah as a patient I'd be asking some questions to the mother about her (lack) of parenting skills. Scene in isolation these things maybe small, but when together...
Obese
Severe dental decay
Missing clinical appointments
Ignoring pain in a child

And if I couldn't have that word, I'd be passing that file on if I could.

avocadotoast · 18/02/2015 23:15

Woah, I'm not hating on anyone. If you've lost weight on Slimming World then good for you. All I mean is, it's possible to eat healthily without following SW, and it's possible for it not to be expensive.

But honestly, if you were heavier because you'd gained muscle, it would be incredibly noticeable even through your clothes. It's more likely for someone to look smaller while remaining the same weight if they've exercised a lot. The type of exercise a 13 year old would be doing (which in this case seemed to be cardio) wouldn't put you in a position where you would gain muscle mass to that extent. While a child's bones are still forming it's a bad idea to embark on any kind of strength training/muscle building.

Pomegranatemolasses · 18/02/2015 23:15

DS1 had awful baby teeth (as did I), due I think to hypoplasia. He was very lucky in that he never suffered any pain. His decayed baby teeth fell out naturally, the same as a child with healthy baby teeth. His adult teeth are now perfect.

DS2 and DD have and had perfect teeth always. I remember the school dentist lecturing me harshly about DS1 and his obviously terrible dental habits, and then being astounded that DS2 and DD came from the same family!

Whilst I don't think hypoplasia is the cause of all the dental decay on this programme, I do remember the utter shame and guilt I felt over DS1's teeth, and the utter disbelief the dentist had when I told her that he did brush his teeth twice a day and didn't have a diet consisting purely of sweets.

Username12345 · 18/02/2015 23:15

I watched it. Made me SO angry! Angry

How can you put your children's lives in danger like that!

Tallulah's mum crying - I love her so much BS. Obviously not enough that she has to have 8 teeth removed and risking her life to diabetes or heart disease!

The woman gets told her son has a fatty liver so she takes him home and gives him chips - really!?

And the lack of discipline - Pavia(?). Outrageous!

I'm still fuming.

Travelledtheworld · 18/02/2015 23:18

It made my Ds14 Rush off and clean his teeth really well !

Willdoitinaminute · 18/02/2015 23:19

Fruit is full of sugar and is acidic. It may be 'healthy' but I see just as many thin children with tooth decay from fruit and fruit juices as obese children who max out on carbs.
The winner of the best hidden sugar award is the stalwart of every yummy mummy, the good old raisin. Closely followed by the smoothie.
Having worked in the business for 30 years we were seeing a real decrease in tooth decay in children during the 1980s until the advent of convenience foods and the explosion of fizzy drink consumption. It is so sad how many children are overweight and obese, and the medics on the programme are correct you never see thin parents with obese children and rarely see obese children with thin children.
And the hospital scenes were pretty tame, I used to do weekly GA clinics and the post op area was like something out of WW1 front line hospital. Blood everywhere and children screaming as they came round from the pain. They seem to have left the reality on the editing floor!

Willdoitinaminute · 18/02/2015 23:21

*should read obese parents with thin children

Pomegranatemolasses · 18/02/2015 23:21

I do agree that parents are not stepping up here at all. But I'm aghast that any parent would agree to be on the programme!

Pavia seriously has many struggles ahead. I also noted that most (all?) of the children had at least one obese parent.

ghostspirit · 18/02/2015 23:22

pome my son is the same my now 12 year old had the same problem when he was little and had teeth removed. as i said was my fault as i gave him lollipops. but then my daughters teeth who is now 17. she never ever had a single filling. my 7 year old son has holes in his teeth. and my 4 year old daughter also has perfect teeth. so seems to be the boys in my case.

Pomegranatemolasses · 18/02/2015 23:23

X post re the obese parents with the obese children.

Yes, ghost, and can often be passed down through the mother's side. Thankfully, it seems to be worst in the baby teeth, and generally the enamel hardens with the adult teeth.

Horrible to have to go through though!

Roobo · 18/02/2015 23:26

It was very sad.

Since having DC I have realised how obsessed people are with feeding children. They are offered a constant supply of food. 'Snack Time' anyone? Hmm and why can't any toddler go more than 5 minutes without their juice water bottles?

I also offen feel that people look down on you when you don't allow your children to have sweets, juice etc as part of their regular diet. Watching this makes me feel confident that I'm doing the right thing for my DC.

ghostspirit · 18/02/2015 23:28

yeah im not impressed with tallulahs mum either :( im not the best parent theres loads i do and have done wrong. but most of what i have heard so far seems to be lazyness. there does not even seem any logic to how shes thinking

Pomegranatemolasses · 18/02/2015 23:30

I agree tiggy, 90% is a shocking statistic. I have a 13 yr old, and I certainly lay down firmer boundaries than Pavia's mum.

ghostspirit · 18/02/2015 23:36

not good pome but also when you get other parents or professionals saying its all your fault it makes you feel really shit and hopeless. when i took my son denist i felt so ashamed and the dentist was talking to me like poo. i also have a really bad fear of dentist so that did not help either. i have found an ace dentist now who explained about the being prone to tooth decay. and she talks in a really positive way. and it means i find it easyer to help the kids and do the right thing by them. because we are both on the same page rather than me being lectured

Willdoitinaminute · 18/02/2015 23:39

Feeding on demand from the very beginning is key to healthy eating habits but allowing the child to decide when they are full and the portion size is key. Asking a young child to finish a meal 'for mummy' stops child from listening to their own hunger centre. They eat to please you rather than when they are hungry and lose the ability to feel full.
Very early on babies will refuse food when they are full, many parents ignore the signs and encourage them to carry on eating.
This pattern can lead to comfort eating because it's nice to be praised and cheered so eating is associated with making mum or dad happy.

ghostspirit · 18/02/2015 23:39

oh i just see the cry bit... looked a bit fake... maybe im being a cow

ChoochiWoo · 18/02/2015 23:41

I watched this, it was interesting that the families as far as I could see had more than one but only one child has a weight problem, my 5 year old is pretty much in proportion but my 2 year has some weight to loose, like Pavias mum said "no off button" struck with me , theres a scarf on my fridge to keep him out, of course getting older and stronger means its of little use sometimes Sad hope this isn't me in a few years.

ghostspirit · 18/02/2015 23:45

the mum never even said anything to the teenager eating the tin of beans as dinner was being sorted out :/

ilovesooty · 18/02/2015 23:45

Talulah's brother was overweight as well I think.
