Stephen McG was tweeting earlier about the smoking and they've mentioned it on the CTM facebook page if anyone is interested.

I don't know if anyone else has this problem; but the nun who helped the prostitutes, looks and sounds so like the nun who married the doctor, I know she's in civvies now and that's the only way I can tell them apart ! Grin Blush

ppeatfruit · 10/02/2015 10:32

Thanks for that link Shelagh Fascinating, but here in Fr. pregnant mums STILL routinely smoke!! My neighbour was telling me she has little in common with some of the other villagers; one of whom was describing what she did when she went into labour , she lit up and took a deep drag Shock

It's not so far back in the dark ages as we might like think.

BertieBotts · 10/02/2015 10:39

I didn't think that they knew condoms prevented STDs back then, I thought that all came in in the 80s with AIDS etc? And they were just for preventing pregnancy before then. (And weren't they horrible thick rubber or lamb intestine things?)

Behindthepaintedgarden · 10/02/2015 11:26

I think Tom and Trixie make a great couple. Behind all the glamour and sophistication, Trixie is actually very kind and practical and would be a lovely vicar's wife. And I totally get her hoping that one day her husband would get a nice country parish so that she could bring her children up in a safe rural setting. It's a natural desire. But I think she'll overcome that and get back with Tom. At least, I really hope so.

Glad to see that Cynthia will be back next week. Although, if Chummy and Sr Evangelista return as well they're going to be pretty crowded out with characters. Personally, I think they could get rid of Sr Winifred as she hasn't made much impact.

SoupDragon · 10/02/2015 12:01

I get Trixie wanting a nice country parish - she has seen enough deprivation in her own job to want a different environment for her children. I also think that she and Tom bring out the best in each other - she lightens him up, he makes her see things differently.

ppeatfruit · 10/02/2015 12:04

Behindthe I can understand Trixie not wanting to settle in another Poplar -type area though !

ShelaghTurner · 10/02/2015 12:12

I'm not convinced by Tom and Trixie. Trixie is (mostly) a great character with a lot of depth that isn't always shown. I can't take to him at all though. I suspect that Helen George isn't long for CTM so maybe they will head off to a different parish together. Who knows.

ShelaghTurner · 10/02/2015 12:14

Chummy isn't due back till the end of the series (thank goodness!), Sr E is back in ep 7 (I think) and Sr. Mary Cynthia back next week. I am so pleased she's back. I didn't realise how much I liked her until she was gone and I'm dying to see how they handle her.

Behindthepaintedgarden · 10/02/2015 12:28

I suspect Helen George might be leaving after this series as well, although I really hope I'm wrong as she's one of my favourite characters.

It does look, though, as if the old team are starting to disband and we'll have to get used to a lot of new characters in CTM. I'm sure it will still be enjoyable television, but I wonder if we're seeing the last of its best days Sad.

MamaMary · 10/02/2015 12:42

I also like Tom and Trixie as a couple, and agree she has depths of kindness and compassion that would be a huge asset to him. And that a dull, dutiful, jam-making wife would not be the best partner for him.

However they need to come to some kind of compromise. He can't expect her - or any wife - to slum it out in an inner city parish for the rest of her days. He could, however, ask her to commit to it for a period of time - say, until their first child is two - or whatever. And then they'll move to the nice country church :)

mammuzzamia · 10/02/2015 12:49

I haven't warmed to Tom, not sure why. I never feel quite convinced by him.

Behindthepaintedgarden · 10/02/2015 12:50

I agree, they need to compromise. Trixie needs to realise that when you marry a man of the church you have a limited say in where his work will take him and that sometimes he might do better work in a deprived area.

However, Tom also needs to recognise that he's part of a pair now and he can't just sit and discuss their future with the bishop, with Trixie having absolutely no right to an opinion.

In real life I'd be advising them not to be so quick to part but to sit down and discuss the whole thing properly and work out how they can move forward as a couple and what they want for their future children.

ppeatfruit · 10/02/2015 12:53

I like chummy Shelagh Grin IMO Miranda gives her a lot of humanity.

Behindthepaintedgarden · 10/02/2015 12:55

I love Chummy and think she leaves a big gap anytime she's missing from a few episodes. I also think her, her husband and baby Freddy are a more realistic family unit than the Turners, who can be a bit saccharine at times.

diddl · 10/02/2015 12:58

"However, Tom also needs to recognise that he's part of a pair now and he can't just sit and discuss their future with the bishop, with Trixie having absolutely no right to an opinion."

How much say so does Tom have though?

Also, they aren't married yet.

Was it realistic for her to have been there?

ppeatfruit · 10/02/2015 13:03

True diddl Also this is the early 60s women were not that involved with 'What doesn't concern them". Even of course if it did concern them Grin.

MamaMary · 10/02/2015 13:06

Tom could refuse the Newcastle city parish but I think it would be frowned upon...So realistically he needs to accept. But it wouldn't be forever. That's what he needs to convince Trixie. Whether he tries to or not remains to be seen. I somehow think he won't ...which would be a shame

I don't miss Chummy or Jenny at all. I'm glad Cynthia's returning though.

I always found Chummy very wooden and unconvincing - she seems to have one or two facial expressions and that's it. Sorry, I know I'm on my own here Grin

ShelaghTurner · 10/02/2015 13:39

Saccharine?! You've wounded my very soul! Shock Oh my goodness, the things that the Turners have had to deal with including the whole of last series when saccharine was the last thing they were (too angsty!). Chummy and Peter are completely unrealistic. There's no chemistry between the actors and I don't get any sense of them being married. They don't feel married on screen.

MarthasHarbour · 10/02/2015 13:39

Much as i loved the old characters I am warming to the new ones. I love Patsy Mount and can see her being a 'sort of' replacement for Trixie if she does have to go. I also like Nurse Crane, she has a mix of autocracy mixed with compassion and can be a 'sort of' replacement for Sister Evangelina if she goes (although i would miss her more).

I find Cynthia/Sr Mary a bit too saccharine tbh.

MarthasHarbour · 10/02/2015 13:41
ShelaghTurner · 10/02/2015 13:42

You're not on your own MamaMary. I can't abide Chummy (or Miranda) and was beginning to really lose patience with the fact that CTM was becoming the Chummy Show. It's 1000x better now other characters get a look in. Crossing fingers she's too busy to be in it at all next year.

MarthasHarbour · 10/02/2015 13:42

ShelaGh

ShelaghTurner · 10/02/2015 13:42

Haha

iklboo · 10/02/2015 14:18

Condoms were known STD preventatives for donkey's years. There are articles about it dating back to the 16th century.
