Oh Blush ok, I didn't know that.

So why do people go on about the 60s being the sexual revolution for women and everyone had loads of sex until the 80s when they started saying "WATCH OUT YOU'RE ALL DOOMED"

(80s baby here, so clueless!)

Mrsjayy · 10/02/2015 14:29

The pill was available by the 60s so women were in charge of their own contraception

Mrsjayy · 10/02/2015 14:33

Oh wait unmarried women couldn't get the pill until 1967 according to a thing I was just reading maybe lots of mrs went for it

Behindthepaintedgarden · 10/02/2015 14:36

Ooh sorry Shelagh. I meant 'saccharine' in the nicest way possible, honestly Blush

Mrsjayy · 10/02/2015 14:38

I don't really like cynthia as was im not sure if I will like her as a nun.

iklboo · 10/02/2015 14:40

Sorry Bertie, that came across really snotty! I didn't mean it that way Blush.

MamaMary · 10/02/2015 14:41

Shelagh glad it's not just me that thinks Miranda/ Chummy is totally unbelievable. And their marriage doesn't seem right at all.

Shelagh and the doc, on the other hand, I can just about believe in.

Jenny used to spoil it for me, so very glad she's gone, though Trixie would be a huge loss imo.

ppeatfruit · 10/02/2015 16:01

I think that Chummy's marriage is explained by her mother who couldn't express her feelings at all if you remember, so their marriage is stilted because they aren't great at showing their love IFYSWIM. IMO Miranda acts the part beautifully.

SoupDragon · 10/02/2015 16:03

Whilst they aren't all visibly loved up, I think they do show a deep but quiet love for each other

ppeatfruit · 10/02/2015 16:11

Exactly SoupDragon Grin

ShelaghTurner · 10/02/2015 17:00

Behindthepaintedgarden Grin I don't know if it's been apparent on this thread but I'm a complete Turnadette fangirl. And my mother wounds my very soul on a daily basis so I'm used to it! Wink

woodhill · 10/02/2015 20:13

yes it's now definitely having a BBC PC spin on it.

girliefriend · 10/02/2015 21:27

just catching up on the thread Smile I really liked this weeks episode, love the new young midwife, reminds me of me as a newly qualified nurse!! All keen but still quite green as well Grin

Poor Trixie, I was disappointed the vicar didn't put their relationship first tbh - he should have done imo. Hope she gets a handle on the booze though.

Behindthepaintedgarden · 11/02/2015 11:17

Does Trixie really have a booze problem? She enjoys a couple of cinzanos when she's winding down in the evening, but the only time we've ever seen her overdo it and pass out drunk was when she went a bit overboard after splitting up with her Fiance.
I hope they just leave it at that and don't turn her into a hardened drinker turning up drunk at work and picking fights with all and sundry. I like Trixie and her mix of brittle sophistication, generosity and occasional flashes of vulnerability. There's no need to go down an alcoholic road with her story. She's perfectly nuanced and very well written at the moment.

Mrsjayy · 11/02/2015 11:26

I think in 1960 a lady drinking so she passes out would be seen as a problem now it is a friday night for some women Grin but I think her drinking is being highlighted because she does seem to be drinking a lot and she didn't realise drinking 3 or 4 drinks every day or night is quite a lot of alcohol imo

ShelaghTurner · 11/02/2015 11:47

The actress says that she lost weight (and actually was looking very thin towards the end of filming) for the storyline. So I suspect this might run a little longer.

ppeatfruit · 11/02/2015 11:48

It's not funny though is it Mrsjayy ? I'm personally involved with relations and their friends who have really bad health due to binge drinking. Weird how it's become so acceptable now.

MamaMary · 11/02/2015 12:00

Oh, Shelagh, did the actress say that? It sounds like her and the vicar won't be getting back together then :(

Mrsjayy · 11/02/2015 12:31

No it isn't really funny sorry if I upset you you are right drinking to excess is seen as acceptable now I like a drink but I think if I was drinking every night I would see it as a problem some people see it as a relaxer to unwind I have had drink issues in the past where all I looked forward to was friday night vodka I really had to reign it in.

SoupDragon · 11/02/2015 15:40

I think Trixie used to have just the odd drink in the evening. In this series she seems to need to have couple of drinks in the evening and sees it as nothing out of the ordinary. She seemed to have a realisation that that was what her father used to do and say he didn't have a problem with alcohol.

SoupDragon · 11/02/2015 15:42

Would a husband-to-be of the time pay any attention to what his fiancee wanted when it came to his job? Isn't it still too early for that level of consideration?

ppeatfruit · 11/02/2015 15:52

That's ok Mrsjayy Grin It's such an odd thing in our society where there's evil 'hard' drugs like cocaine, heroin etc. and alcohol which is apparently worse for your liver than a lot of the 'hard' drugs but there's such a contrasting attitude to it. Confused

SoupDragon If you're a vicar or whatever doesn't the church have to be more dominant in your life than your spouse?

Behindthepaintedgarden · 11/02/2015 16:04

I remember a time when having a drink on your own at home was seen as the start of the slippery slope. Nowadays, even my mum will have an occasional glass of wine with her dinner or when sitting in the garden doing the crossword when she's in the house all-on-her-own.
So yes, I suppose back in the sixties Trixie's drinking might have raised a few eyebrows.

ppeatfruit · 11/02/2015 16:22

It said on the radio today that the only people who benefit from a glass of wine are the over 65 yr. old women!!! I would disagree though; DM is in her 80s and has 2 or 3 glasses of wine every night! she gets depressed and I can't see why it's so good for her.

Mrsjayy · 11/02/2015 16:26

My dad used to have a huge drink problem won't go into it but he thought it was fine because he didn't drink in the house he didn't agree with it , it is only in the last decade that my mum will drink at home not that she drinks much. My Nana had a bottle of chinzano for decades in her cupboard brought out at new year she had a slug topped up with lemonade and put it away again she had aged:decades chinzano Grin
