Notebooks at the ready Grin We should have enough information at the end of the first episode to start cooking up some slightly implausible theories.

OP posts:

I got the impression that jocelyn wouldn't come out of retirement for the son's case. "...so you'll do it for them but not for..."

rollonthesummer · 21/01/2015 09:11

Are lawyers either defence or prosecution though or do they do both?

GentlyBenevolent · 21/01/2015 09:24

The penny dropped when she spent time with claire and realised her story was completely inconsistent. And when she mentioned it to DT he was all 'and?'. Which is why I reckon he is the better copper because to the viewer Gwen looked well dodgy from the start but Ellie took it all at face value.

AgathaF · 21/01/2015 09:25

LillianGish I think that when a case is a 'major incident' such as a murder etc, then the case is allocated a random name to identify it (ie Yewtree), so I have assumed that is where the Sandbrook name came from. Might be totally wrong there though, since little else bears any resemblance to reality.

OnlyLovers · 21/01/2015 09:27

They could rescue it easily; Baptiste goes on holiday to Dorset. Job done

Oh YES! Let's pitch it!

roll, I think they do one or the other.

Fleeceblankets · 21/01/2015 09:52

Thanks gently!

CurlyRedHairNow · 21/01/2015 09:55

she's really annoying me in this. maybe she's meant to be really annoying.

So, DT is keeping the woman with green eyes brown hair nd a gap between her teeth close by not to protect her but because he thinks she is involved?

CurlyRedHairNow · 21/01/2015 09:56

yall gotta stop calling her gwen! i'm confused. she is Claire?

OnlyLovers · 21/01/2015 10:03

Curly, yes, it's Claire being referred to asGwen. I find it confusing too –I never watched Torchwood.

And yes, I think he's told her he's protecting her but in fact he's keeping an eye on her. I have to admit I'm a little hazy on this aspect of the plot though.

AnnieHoo · 21/01/2015 10:07

Hmm yes that's right, lawyers are usually defence or prosecution.. So as Jocelyn is a prosecution barrister it's unlikely that she'd asked her to be defence lawyer for her son so we can rule out my theory!

FoxyMcFox · 21/01/2015 10:16

So DT let Ellie take little Bertie Fred to the house where Gwen Claire was living and all the while suspected her of being a murderer?

The flashback of Gwen Claire saying "what have you done?" and slapping a bloke didn't show if it was Lee or not. Maybe it was the dad-next-door who she was shagging? He murdered teen babysitter/cousin and she found out?

AnnieHoo · 21/01/2015 10:26

Is Claire is connected to Danny's murder since he was killed after she'd moved to Broadchurch.

Could there be a connection between the DI that DT's ex wife was having an affair with and her car being stolen with the pendant in it?

Could there be a connection with the same DI and Broadchurch through drugs or pedophile ring?

APlaceInTheWinter · 21/01/2015 10:34

Lawyers are usually defence or prosecution but since their grasp of legalities has been shaky to say the least, I still think that's why Baptiste and Rampling fell out.

Foxy yy I think the whole Ellie-and-Fred have a sleepover at Claire's storyline really stretched the suspension of disbelief on all levels ie that Hardy would put them at risk (esp since Claire said Lee was back) and that Ellie would blithely stay over in those circumstances. I thought she was supposed to be more cynical since her husband murdered her friend's son Hmm

APlaceInTheWinter · 21/01/2015 10:39

ooh! I just had another thought. Maybe Hardy hasn't gone rogue with the Claire/protection/spy issue. Maybe Hardy's previous police force are paying for the cottage as they think Claire is a suspect too and maybe the Sandbrook case wasn't closed at all but they moved Hardy down there to monitor Claire . . .

*Disclaimer - I know this has nothing in common with how cases and police forces work in real life but tbh neither does Broadchurch at the moment!

AnnieHoo · 21/01/2015 10:43

Oo.. That would tie in with Miller asking Hardy "why have you even still got these files?" When she found them in his drawer wouldn't it?

iklboo · 21/01/2015 10:49

Might also explain why he had to stay in the Traders Arms first - while they put everything in place for him, somewhere to live etc.

BUT wouldn't his health issue (which looks genuine) scupper this?

Hygellig · 21/01/2015 11:14

Just catching up on this thread. DH and I watched series 1 on DVD recently and now watch this one as it goes out.

I was wondering how Tom could be 13. If Ellie and Beth did an NCT class at the same time, then he must only be 11 or 12. Danny's gravestone said he was born in May 2002 and this series is presumably set in spring 2014.

Not the biggest error or discrepancy but it is bugging me!

I had expected Beth to give birth in the street with Ellie helping as normally seems to happen in TV dramas!

Blondeshavemorefun · 21/01/2015 11:56

So Beth left new baby with her older child who is in Waterloo road at the moment :)

Why didn't DT go to oc home the night her husband got arrested - who did she leave her kids with? Or again younger baby/toddler left with older sibling

All seems a bit silly and not gripping like s1 was :(

APlaceInTheWinter · 21/01/2015 13:11

Blondes iirc oc wasn't allowed home because the police taped up the house to look for further evidence.

I've just realised that Claire was saying she didn't know what Lee did on the night of the murder because she was drugged (because Lee drugged her). When Ellie was in court, she was saying she didn't know what Joe did on the night of Danny's murder because she was drugged (because she'd taken a sleeping tablet). I wonder where these parallels are going . . .

FoxyMcFox · 21/01/2015 13:12

OC home had crime scene tape all over it so presumably she wouldn't have been allowed back in straight away hence visiting DT in the hotel. Kids were with her sister.

rollonthesummer · 21/01/2015 13:29

Oh yes, well spotted!

Icimoi · 21/01/2015 14:16

I thought she said that Tom was nearly 13? Or it could be that this series is meant to be summer 2015, rather as the first one was shown a few months ahead of its official timescale.

Fiderer · 21/01/2015 15:59

Olly (Ellie's nephew/the young journalist) Leonardo came to the hotel to stay with Tom and Fred while Ellie went off to see Hardy that night. Don't remember seeing his mum and Ellie wasn't on good terms with her. Did she really say her sister looked after them? Maybe she didn't want to bring Olly and the newspaper into it.

When Lee did his sleeveless hammering act and looked up to see the 2 Sandbrook girls and their mum, was that a flashback? I was distracted by trying to remember who the mum was and only realised afterwards who the girls were.

FoxyMcFox · 21/01/2015 16:04

I thought she said she left them with her sister but could be wrong.

Icimoi if it is meant to now be 2015 then Beth had one record breaking pregnancy!

MadameJulienBaptiste · 21/01/2015 16:27

Firstly I'd like to say that it's quote normal for a dad to tell his new baby 'I'm your daddy'. Dp did it with both of ours, what are people trying to suggest!!!

Secondly, my 'usband would love to come and put this sorry excuse for a crime thriller right, but 'ee 'eez busy wiz 'eez bees.
