Anyone watching?

OP posts:
OwlCapone · 25/11/2014 06:57

I don't think he wanted anything brought out of the house rather than just that specific photo.

LeopardInABobbleHat · 25/11/2014 07:04

Not even the song, Scarborough Fair. I think that's why he sneaked out of the hospital. Anything at all that comes from the house brings Her with it.

diddl · 25/11/2014 07:28

Yes, I'd forgotten the song.

so that's why the case was empty.

But what about the case?

And what he was wearing??!!

diddl · 25/11/2014 07:31

The woman playing his neighbour, wasn't she in Scott & Bailey as Janet's ex husband's girlfriend?
And the guy playing the copper's boss was Janet's ex?

And Mark Addy was in the Full Monty with Lesley Sharpe!

So I was surprised when Hannah's mum wasn't played by Lesley Sharpe!

BringMeTea · 25/11/2014 09:43

Yes diddl she was Janet's ex's girlfriend and recently popped up in Moving On. It was creepy but a couple too many atmospheric musical thwunks I thought.

IsabellaofFrance · 25/11/2014 09:43

It was so spooky, I nearly had a heart attack at the end where the woman in the sari appeared at the end of Hannah's bed.

diddl · 25/11/2014 09:56

Something that I can't remember-did Hannah tell the policeman that Tom had said " I tried to stop her but I wasn,'t strong enough"?

I assume he is referring to the whatever that washed up on the beach at the beginning?

But it would be taken as meaning that the SW jumped, or leaned on the faulty window?

Did chuckle to myself when the policeman said to h&e bloke "or maybe he pushed her"? & then they laughed.

But perhaps he did??

guineapiglet · 25/11/2014 10:15

diddl that struck me too... He'd been saying he was '80 odd' and very very weak etc but what if SW walking in with photo had released a monster within himself which had the force to chuck her through... Remember all those noises, lights flashing etc just before it happened.
Still wondering who the silent curly haired lady is as he seemed to shy away from her... His ex wife or sister who had accidentally gone into the shrine room cleaning?!?

LeopardInABobbleHat · 25/11/2014 10:36

I think the silent old lady could be someone who lived in the area an knows about the incident from the past that started off the haunting or Tom when he was younger. Or someone who knows what sort of spirit is behind the haunting.

I took the "I couldn't stop her" to refer to the spirit, although everyone else took it to mean he couldn't stop the SW as he is old and frail.

I'm not so sure he fell down the stairs either. I think he might have been pushed.

BamBam21 · 25/11/2014 12:37

I am clearly thinking far too much about this programme, but it was just so good!

The thing is that, although Tom seems genuinely terrified, when he was lying at the bottom of the stairs and the shell fell down beside him, he spoke to "her" almost affectionately. I think he said, "Oh you're alright", or something like that.Confused

Leopard Tom only pretended to fall down the stairs to get himself away from the house I think.Smile

diddl · 25/11/2014 12:38

Oh he didn't fall don't the stairs, he laid himself down & pretended.

But when the shell rolled down, what did he call out?

Abra1d · 25/11/2014 13:18

The photographs of Tom (presumably) as a little boy looked to come from a date predating the 1930s, which is when he would have been that age if he is 80-something now.

They looked to be nearer the start of the C20th to me.

LeopardInABobbleHat · 25/11/2014 16:39

Ah, did he? I had one eye on my knitting at that time (soon put it down though!)

Tigresswoods · 25/11/2014 20:16

Right I tried to watch it. I can't do it!

I really liked it...love a proper spooky mystery. Especially with some good old fashioned jump scares!

Maybe the Indian lady is/was his nanny/ayah who became possessive and jealous of other women in his life? Murdered (drowned?) his mother, maybe a girlfriend (in the sea at Scarborough?), the social worker who was looking after him...careworker next? I think the statue in the attic was Kali who has pretty mixed interpretations ranging from a bringer of death to a maternal figure... Not sure how the old lady in the home fits in (former flame who escaped the ghost?), or the fact that he won't own up to how old he is - the pictures seemed to be from before his time - unless they're not of him...Or what the moving pictures are about!

Did think it was odd how he was clearly scared and desperate to leave the house but when the shell fell he said something almost reassuring, 'you'll be alright' or something? Maybe they're one and the same - she possesses him?

Looking forward to next week!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 25/11/2014 21:55

I was so disappointed, it was like a bbc version of Woman in Black, it's all been done to death already.

GeorginaWorsley · 25/11/2014 22:04

Sorry but I loved itSmile

Have rewatched on I player to try and see what bits I missed.

ItsSoooFluffy · 25/11/2014 23:34

Really liked it! Really jumpy! Can't wait for the next one! Very intriguing

BOFster · 26/11/2014 00:59

I've just watched it on iplayer- I thought it was great. DameDiazepam- it's only been done to death in the way that any horror film/ghost story has. I thought it was a pretty good take on it all: all genres have their tropes.

Showy · 26/11/2014 12:29

You can only tell something like seven stories in total according to a rather interesting Jungian principle. How you use tropes is what makes a drama work and subverting them- a trope in itself -is exceedingly difficult. Gothic horror in particular relies upon the fabric of its history. The locked room for example, the unknown, relies on our knowledge of the locked room as a symbol of horror. You need that precedent.

Or, what BOF said.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 26/11/2014 12:37

I love a good jumpy drama and Michael Palin is always fab but this just didn't do it for me, the rocking chair with no one sitting in it, oh come on Hmm Grin

Mind you, we know that area well and were saying "oh look, there's Emley Moor!" and "oh Huddersfield, look"Grin

ginnycreeper5 · 26/11/2014 21:42

Some bits were a bit cliched and seemed to be borrowed from other works:

The moving, empty rocking chair (Ammityville)
Water rushing down the stairs (The Shining)
People in photos doffing their hats (It)
The way the thing on the beach and in her room slowly stood up and loomed bigger and bigger (The Ring)

Still, it all worked!

Tanith · 27/11/2014 09:02

Not borrowed Shock

It's a tribute Wink

Nessalina · 28/11/2014 05:52

This has officially given me the heebie jeebies, still having 4am flashbacks whilst changing the baby Blush I'm banning myself from watching any more!
Detailed updates next week please, I shall 'watch' vicariously through this thread!!
