rhyming slang- she says 'julius seizure' when Smurf gives her the mug of tea in EP2 - before she goes in CJ's tent and he call her Dawsey

omg!! some of the fan fiction is horribly written- i hate the way they write. Molly does not speak like they have her speaking!

Just looked up 'kettle'. It is rhyming slang for watch. Comes from 'kettle and hob' and rhymed with fob watches!

Nickel45 · 20/11/2014 20:36

Kettle is from kettle and hob, rhyming for fob watch.
Will have a think if there were any others,

monopod · 20/11/2014 20:38

SPO she does use a few examples of rhyming slang. Taters, septic tanks, for example - trying to think of more!

monopod · 20/11/2014 20:41

Icemist, I didn't think julius seizure was rhyming slang? It did make me laugh though Grin I love how colourful her language is.

snumpy · 20/11/2014 20:44

Other than dh, nobody else in RL seems to have seen OG. I don't think dh even knows the extent of my obsession.

orphan · 20/11/2014 20:51

Would it be considered a bit ridiculous if you used rhyming slang and you weren't a cockney, because I love some of them and feel quite tempted to use them! (And I have what's probably an RP accent)

firegirl · 20/11/2014 20:59

I never realised septic tanks was rhyming slang! I've just looked it up - yanks. I have spent the last few weeks wondering why army gyms had septic tanks in them - duh! I was even going to ask that question on here at some point, thank god I didn't.
orphan I think rhyming slang is great, in any accent. So go ahead!

Ilovelblue · 20/11/2014 21:02

Not sure if I've posted one of these photos before but this was on my last visit to Bath in 2012 I think it was.

cherin you may find it useful in your Christmas stag-in-Bath sketch (as opposed to a stag-in-a-bath). Hope you had a safe journey home.

I remember when Molly was talking to Bashira and she gave her some sweets I think and said "they're for ron". She then said "later on, I'm teaching you real good English here" (or something similar).

I feel educated! Firegirl, I was the same about Septic Tanks, all making sense now. I have such a terrible memory I would get it wrong and say the wrong thing and not only would the accent be wrong the whole meaning too!

Iloveblue, I really wanted to to go to Bath, but got rumbled by DH that it was OG related. Another example of why I am keeping my mouth shut! I am definatley anonymous from now on!

LovingTheBritActors · 20/11/2014 21:13

I have not been able to post for a while. Few days away and then my daughter was in hospital so feeling little OG deprived. When I tried to speak to my daughter who is a CJ fan, I was met with a look of horror that we liked the same chap.
Can't believe how many posts there have been. I find it difficult to read dialogue with some of fink etc as Molly is definitely not like that. Will try to catch up but may take a while.

Nickel45 · 20/11/2014 21:17

Sorry, going back to rhyming slang (just got kids to sleep). Only other one I could think of was "moody" when Molly's nan brought moody food. Molly also uses expressions though, which arent rhyming slang, but are east end, i suppose like well dodge geeze, save these for 'Ron, sticking her hooter in, prope nice and,of course, numpty! Mind you, maybe they aren't just London things?
Anyway .....!

monopod · 20/11/2014 21:22

Ooh, what's moody food? I missed that one! Nickel, yes, it's all those expressions and grammatical agreement (e.g. she weren't) that mark out her particular linguistic origins. The trouble with the fanfic is that a lot of it is too heavy-handed with very specific elements of East End speech like the th-fronting (i.e. 'f' or 'v' for 'th'), with the result that it ends up looking like caricature and yes, like she's really thick (which she clearly isn't).

Nickel45 · 20/11/2014 21:24

Moody food is stolen food!
You said that much better than I did, thank you mono :)

cherin · 20/11/2014 21:31

"All nicked", she said? :-)
Mind you, as a non native speaker some of these things were complete mysteries to me! I think I got the septic tank....(and the first joke with smurf "you've got something on your chin? Oh it's just a bit of bullshit"...I found that hilarious, even if it's not slang!!)

cherin · 20/11/2014 21:32

(I thought moody food was comfort food...eggs and bacon?)

monopod · 20/11/2014 21:35

cherin that bit did make me chortle too! I'd love to have such quick wit!

Nickel where does the moody food appear? Can't remember that at all; clearly I need another rewatch! And I love the word numpty; I think I learnt it at Uni up north and I don't know where it actually comes from...

monopod · 20/11/2014 21:36

Ooh, numpty origins: www.theguardian.com/uk/2007/apr/04/britishidentity.features11

Ilovelblue · 20/11/2014 21:38

Richtea I would like to suggest that if anyone could be in Bath when my friend and I are at Bailbrook House, it would be nice to meet up to share our mutual interest but I am not convinced how my friend would react. She is a real television addict and although I know she thought CJ was drop dead gorgeous and loved the series, she has told me how sad I was when I mentioned various forums dedicated to the programme (haven't specifically mentioned MN). She was pleased for me to book the hotel but like my elderly friend on Monday night, I am 99% certain she would believe these forums to be dodgy and dangerous!

Richtea19 · 20/11/2014 21:45

Iloveblue. How lovely you are. I am sure I will manage to get to Bath. I'll leave it a while, DH will forget all out OG, I'll make him promises he can't refuse!!

If we are a society or club? We should have an AGM!! All wearing combat with stag logos :)

cherin · 20/11/2014 21:46

monopod by memory the moody food is discussed between Molly and dad just before she leaves for regents street and the rosabaya capsules...

monopod · 20/11/2014 21:46

Ah, just educated myself about moody, in Ep 3. I'm not sure it's rhyming slang though; think it's just regular slang! For dodgy/stolen, as previously suggested. Apparently the reasoning is moody sky = overcast sky = shady = dodgy = nicked/stolen.

monopod · 20/11/2014 21:47

Thanks cherin! Yes, I found it :)

cherin · 20/11/2014 21:48

Oi! Forgot to say that yesterday I bought a bargainous pair of boots (not army style, more like riding...) and that they're giving me blisters...only just...i knew there was nothing wrong with the old ones but I could not find them!!

monopod · 20/11/2014 21:51

On the subject of people in RL who've watched OG, I haven't found any yet! Although I was speaking with one of my colleagues today who had at least heard of the series and knew it featured a British female medic. We had a great chat about (second-hand) war experiences and I confessed that I had wanted to join the army when I was 17 Grin

I'd be up for a visit to Bath. If you all looked scary and dangerous when I got there I'd swiftly go incognito and go shopping by myself instead Wink
