Sharon Shoesmith
Me. Me. Me.

LineRunner · 27/10/2014 22:10

Sharon Shoesmith is on Newsnight in a bit. I will be watching that.

SuburbanRhonda · 27/10/2014 22:11

It was £120,000.

LineRunner · 27/10/2014 22:11

£120,000.

SuburbanRhonda · 27/10/2014 22:12

Really, verity?

How about the death threats to her children? Ok with those, are you?

BigRedBall · 27/10/2014 22:12

Gosh I thought it was £20k...

vintagenurse · 27/10/2014 22:13

I feel for Sharon Shoesmith and Maria Ward. I do feel they were scapegoated, Sharon Shoesmith said the social workers were not initially sacked because there was no evidence they were guilty of gross misconduct. Ed Balls himself said there was intense pressure from the public for someone to blame and for the government to be seen to take action.

Of course, ultimately the people to blame were his mother and her boyfriend. The woman from the serious case review was right when she said it was the cumulative effect of many mistakes from many agencies which meant he 'slipped through the net'.
Who would want to be a social worker? Working with families like this is so complex, so difficult. Some of the CP families I've worked with have had 6 social workers in as many months, how can anyone get a handle of whats going on in a childs life with that turnover of staff?

Stars66 · 27/10/2014 22:13

I am a social worker -please be gentle!- The massive caseloads mean that it is impossible to safeguard every child when some parents are out to deceive services. The witchhunt forgot about the amount of times it is alleged the mum lied to professionals. How would you get the truth out of people who want to deceive?

DiaDuit · 27/10/2014 22:13

dia, if you think it was all about blame, you must have been watching a different programme from the one I watched.

I dont think.

R4roger · 27/10/2014 22:13

terrible how social workers and paediatricians and police are blamed when the parents kill their children.
and how many children have been killed since 2006? 260 I think it said. 26 known to social services.
I blame the Sun and its petition

2minsofyourtime · 27/10/2014 22:14

I think it shows how impossible it is to do an adequate job if your workload is 50% more than it should be,

I think it's quite clear that people working in child protection are vilified and no one want to take on these roles anymore, so vacancies go unfilled and people who are unsuitable for the role get the job because they're the only ones who appilled.

Ofsted are a law into themselves, no other agencies only keeps documents for 3 months! Ofsted inspections are the publics only way of knowing levels of service delivered to families and it seems there is no transparency to this public service.

I think

Sleepingbunnies · 27/10/2014 22:15

Hats off to you stars I couldn't do that job.

R4roger · 27/10/2014 22:15

and the poor paediatrician who shouldnt have even been employed in that position. Permanent broken down now thanks to the hounding in britain.

JugglingFromHereToThere · 27/10/2014 22:15

Watched some of it. Am sure there are still basic lessons to be learnt for those of us that work with young children, such as taking early and thorough action on any concerns.
However think we shouldn't forget the parent's responsibility in what happened, closely followed by the lack of proper resources in services for young children and families.

DiaDuit · 27/10/2014 22:16

How would you get the truth out of people who want to deceive?

I would imagine that is a huge part of the job and shouldnt be in any way used as an excuse for this happening. It should be expected that people will deceive and accounted for!

theeternalstudent · 27/10/2014 22:16

stars only respect here.

Floraclare · 27/10/2014 22:16

I found it quite upsetting to watch, both from the horror of what happened to Peter Connelly, but also the horrendous scapegoating of individuals. The front line staff involved might not have been perfect, but in no way deserved the anger and hatred directed at them - and in no way deserved the total destruction of their lives and mental health.

And anyone who has ever worked in a front line service, will be aware that it could happen to you - and you could be one small and human mistake away from having your picture on the front of The Sun, with some hateful caption.

It also really made me realise just how utterly awful most of our politicians and media are - total scumbags

80schild · 27/10/2014 22:16

Recently I have been questioning everything I read in the media (a kind of personal experience).

This programme has really made me feel aware how awful the media in this country is. They don't report responsibly and love watching people hang out to dry and also clearly lie - blatantly.

It is so awful what happened to that child and the media just saw it as an opportunity. There were awful mistakes but responsibility laid on everyone involved.

thoughtsbecomethings · 27/10/2014 22:16

I work in this sector and parents can be very very clever at covering up things and pulling the wool over your eyes.
I think as usual we think it's only the SW's who are responsible when things go wrong and I am fed up with them always being blamed

The real person we should be blaming is peters mother.

it was very brave of Dr Kim Holt, paediatrician, to appear on the programme and strong of her to turn down the pay out. Shock

Sleepingbunnies · 27/10/2014 22:19

I have friends who work in childrens services and it is horrendous thankless task. Ed balls is a joke

R4roger · 27/10/2014 22:19

Agree, Ed Balls is an absolute joke

DiaDuit · 27/10/2014 22:19

The real person we should be blaming is peters mother.

And her boyfriend.

ChillingGrinBloodLover · 27/10/2014 22:21

I didn't know it was on, I'll try to watch it on catch up.
