I believe it's back on Sunday. Hurray!

I really hope though that they focus more on Edith and less on Mary and her boring, all look the samey, suitors.

Ooh I can solve one mystery about the dog. Its not the original one - the dog was called Pharoah in the first (& 2nd?) series. That one died - not sure if it was mentioned on-screen or if a new dog just appeared with a different name.

This one Isis is Pharoahs daughter, so could conceivably be only 6/7.

GimmeMySquash · 22/09/2014 00:27

Are the dog names a nod to Lord Carnarvan?

TheWholeOfTheSpoon · 22/09/2014 00:41

I just watched it on ITV player and the Thompson's teddy bear advert made me cry. Downton Abbey, not so much.

Rosa · 22/09/2014 06:27

I watch on filmon abroard and often it jumps or stops. what did Mary say in reply to Gillinghams dirty week away???
As for the Thomsons advert to be honest I thought they would probably charge the teddy for his seat or his inflight meal and knowing its luck it would be allocated a seat away from the rest of his party....

BranchingOut · 22/09/2014 07:13

She said yes, as long as no one found out.

Explored · 22/09/2014 08:06

How did Edith's baby end up with the farmer?

I thought Edith suggested it and the Aunt and Granny told her what a bad idea it was (for all the reasons it's going to turn out to be a bad idea) and other arrangements were made.

I really hope Tom doesn't end up with the Teacher. I like Tom.

tribpot · 22/09/2014 08:08

Edith retrieved the baby from her foster parents in Switzerland and asked the farmer guy to take care of the baby for her on behalf of 'a friend'. She thought it might be easier to have her closer by - obv it isn't at all, as anyone could have told her. I guess at some point FarmerWife is going to confront her about her supposed relationship with the farmer and then it'll all come out .. and before you know it Lord 6 will have discovered the truth.

BaronessBomburst · 22/09/2014 08:20

If we get more of the farmer in his fireman's getup I'll be happy. :)

Trickydecision · 22/09/2014 08:23

I thought that too, Explored. We will await the turning out badly as Tribpot predicts.

Sock and Littlebear, thanks. All references to the relationship went over my head.

Explored · 22/09/2014 08:37

Why is it that Mary is being encouraged to re-marry when any hint that Tom might do the same is seen as an affront to Sybil's memory? Tom's been widowed much longer than Mary.

KristinaM · 22/09/2014 09:04

Because Mary is going to marry someone suitable , one of the cookie cutter lords

They are worried that Tom will marry someone from the working classes and take their granddaughter away

tribpot · 22/09/2014 09:04

I don't think that it's that Tom (always to be known as Pickle) can't remarry, he's just expected to marry into the gentry so that Giant Baby Sybil doesn't end down the pit like Old Baby Marigold.

eatyourveg · 22/09/2014 09:19

I think Thomas has something to do with the still missing jewels Baxter stole

Explored · 22/09/2014 09:22

But if Thomas was involved too, how would he have had such a hold over Baxter? If her story comes out, his must too.

And isn't the story of Thomas Cora finding out Thomas is a nasty so and so, only for him then to do something heroic that makes him favourite getting a bit old? It must have happened at least 3 times now.

diddl · 22/09/2014 09:33

I love the idea of Edith getting Strallen's house & money & living with her daughter!

YeGodsAndLittleFishes · 22/09/2014 10:11

Just watched while getting on with today's ironing. Great start to the new series!

I was interested in the firefighter uniforms and there are records of British firefighters with similar uniforms from before then. What i was surprised by was to find that there used to be all women fire brigades in England!

mrsjavierbardem · 22/09/2014 10:59

they need some attractive men.

The men so far have been a heaving mass of unsexiness.
Hugh Bonneville anyone?

Given that Mary has already experienced true love, you would think she would be perfectly well aware that what she is feeling for Gillingham isn't the real thing.

It's awful to see poor Edith being reduced to the 'spinster sister' drooping around Downton again. It was lovely to see her transformation into an independent woman popping up and down to London and not giving a stuff about Downton and Mary's barbed remarks.

As an Irish person I find it utterly unbelievable that a staunch rebel like Tom would now be sitting decorously in the drawing room, waiting for his daughter to be brought down to him by the Nanny for an after tea visit. He really isn't a credible character at all.

wantacatplease · 22/09/2014 11:16

But then again you haven't fallen in love with an English aristocrat, have you? Well, have you?!

Vintagejazz · 22/09/2014 11:20

Actually, myself and Prince Charles William were once........

Well okay, no I haven't. But believe me, his character is daft.

Explored · 22/09/2014 11:23

When did Thomas and Jimmy become such firm friends? And why did they do that just as Jimmy leaves? There's something afoot there.

The thing with Tom was ridiculous from the start. Sibyl could marry the chauffeur (and an Irish one at that) but Edith can't even admit she has a child. I still like Tom though.

I think I might be a little too invested here...

wantacatplease · 22/09/2014 11:36

Yes, I think we might all be! I actually said to DH last week, "Ooh, Downton's back this Sunday...I've missed the family..." DH was all Hmm. Blush

diddl · 22/09/2014 12:10

I hate the edith storyline.

I'm not sure that she would have had sex without being married-let alone with a married man!

This guff about him going to Germany to try to get a divorce, obviously a plot device, but any plausability to it does anyone know?

It's bound to come out that the little girl is hers, isn't it?

As for Thomas, just FUCK OFF!!

LittleBearPad · 22/09/2014 12:11

Yes Thomas and his nasty nature are boring as is the 'is Mr Bates a murderer' storyline that's being used again. I wish they'd move on from that
