Thought I better start another one (in case I lose you all next week!)

Fishstix, I had wondered that too! I am sick of PH and his little digs and his sly glances. It's like someone has told him that he looks really sexy when he does that with his eyes.

Well, he doesn't.

ppeatfruit · 19/09/2014 08:10

riverboat1 Thanks for that about THOSE cakes\pastries . I knew someone would be more knowledgeable - and be able to spell their name correctly - than the GBBO team Grin.

They just looked like croissants in cake form to me. Would have been better with some grated chocolate on the top with the sugar. (I agree with the poster who said that there was a deliberate mistake in the recipe which is not playing fair).

TortoiseshellSpecs · 19/09/2014 08:38

jux & fish, PH just comes across as a creosoted sleaze to me. Bleugh.

mazylou · 19/09/2014 08:44

On another forum, Luis's eclairs were referred to as "bright blue smurf turds".

Rusticated · 19/09/2014 09:43

Smurf turds and creosoted sleaze Grin

To whichever pp has a Breton husband and was knowledgeable - your description of what they usually look like made me realise I have also eaten those pastries in Brittany in their bigger, sliced form. Didn't realise they were the same thing at all...

I've been watching PH's Pies and Puds which we recorded when it was broadcast, and he made empanadas on the episode we watched last night, with two Brazilian chefs on to demonstrate their rival versions not only can he still not pronounce the word, even with three Spanish speakers in his kitchen, but he behaves completely differently when his 'guests' are men and a tough Brazilian auntie he can't flirt with.

Jux · 19/09/2014 15:39

So, those Breton quinamans, they should be round, large and you slice them like a cake? Triangular slices? How thick are they meant to be? About an inch? (Yes, OK, I'm thinking I might try my hand.)

Honeezreturn · 19/09/2014 21:19

Howard's on extra slice tonight!

Davros · 19/09/2014 21:30

Hasn't Howard been in ES before? Carving out a meeja career?!

KenDoddsDadsDog · 19/09/2014 21:40

I'm catching up now !

Honeezreturn · 19/09/2014 21:56

I love Howard, he's hilarious

Dolly80 · 19/09/2014 22:07

Slightly off topic but, can I thank you all for being so friendly on this thread. I've ventured into AIBU territory tonight (damn you red wine confidence) and I'm suddenly longing for chat about bald prince Harry & Norm! They weren't unkind, it's just such an alien part of mumsnet for me!

Also, I still don't know what those bloody pastries in the technical we're the other day.

Kouign Ammans are flat and caramelised.
www.bonappetit.com/recipe/kouign-amann
www.davidlebovitz.com/2005/08/long-live-the-k/

I've eaten through my weight worth of these and the above two recipes come close to what I've had.
Not the stupid muffins PH had in his recipe.

Dolly80 · 19/09/2014 22:18

Thanks coffee, I remember you knew what they were the other night. Thanks for the recipe, I'll have to give it a go

coffeeinbed · 19/09/2014 22:20

Let us know how it goes, Dolly.

Elderflowergranita · 20/09/2014 00:53

An aside: was it Mel who wondered where 'Breton' was?

MagratsHair · 20/09/2014 08:30

Dolly if you're looking for a new section of mn to explore, come onto Chat under the Fun & Games topic. Its not as bitey as aibu Smile

Veritata · 20/09/2014 08:37

That first recipe coffee posted the link for actually looks very like Paul's - it uses muffing cups and does he thing of folding the corners over into the centre.

coffeeinbed · 20/09/2014 08:49

Hmmm.

Maybe because of the angle they are shot they looked flatter, but it does say muffin tins.

I seem to have an irrational dislike to muffin high Kouign Ammans.

riverboat1 · 20/09/2014 09:40

I looked on marmiton.org which is the most popular French website for recipes, and the highest rated quinaman/ Kouign A man recipe was this:

m.marmiton.org/recettes/recette_kouign-aman-gateau-breton_66915.aspx

It says to cook it in a loose bottomed 'mould' which is usually a shallow cake tin.

riverboat1 · 20/09/2014 09:41

Sorry, 'moule' not mould.

ppeatfruit · 20/09/2014 10:00

Sorry to go on about the quinamans (sp)? the burnty one on ES last night was correct then? btw I thought that ES was better with less guests and therefore a `more relaxed JB. Also Kate was brilliant!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 20/09/2014 10:50

I am so sorry that Kate went - I loved her. And I want to have hair like hers.

LineRunner · 20/09/2014 11:07

Kate was (well, presumably still is) a great character.

SqueezyCheeseWeasel · 20/09/2014 11:09

Yes. I too have KateHair envy.
