You're welcome Jux It's a great addition to any cookery library ! Grin

It seems odd that if the capercaille has to be buried in the garden the dog didn't dig it up earlier ! Did he eat it?

I've vaguely heard of it what does it consist of?

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 12/09/2014 10:21

On a scale of 1-10, how bad would it be to buy the GBBO book for this year, when I have them from two previous years, and have yet to actually bake anything from them?

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 12/09/2014 10:34

SDTG everyone knows that cookbooks are for reading and looking at the pretty pictures, not just for actually following the recipes. Smile

LRDtheFeministDragon · 12/09/2014 10:40

Oh, yes. And for looking at pretty pictures.

I love Elizabeth David (despite lack of pictures in my copies). I think I've followed an actual recipe of hers about once. It was good, though.

Are the GBBO ones good to read? I've flipped through in Tesco and thought they were a bit bland.

coffeeinbed · 12/09/2014 10:53

I have one or two of the GBBO books and haven't baked anything from it, but did briefly consider getting the new one.

So, you're in good company. Well, in my company, FWIW...

ppeatfruit · 12/09/2014 11:14

Is it possible to get the GBBO recipes on line? I wouldn't buy the books because I tend to be a 'creative' cook Grin I always use different ingredients etc. so as long as I know the basics it's fine, Saint Deels' are my go - to books. E. David as well, she's got easiest recipe for seasonal fruit jams and jellies I've ever made Grin.

Jux · 12/09/2014 12:25

I tried to do puff pastry/tarte tatin from one GBBO book. It's the only GBBO book I have, and that's why. The pastry was just wrong, I couldn't get it to go right at all. I had a thread asking for help with it here.

I have two favourite recipe books, both from my childhood - one is the one with the capercailie, and the other is Cooking with Pomiane. I don't follow recipes often, but I do like reading the books and looking at the pictures. The GBBO books aren't worth reading really.Sad

thedrummerswife · 12/09/2014 12:31

Sorry if this has already been posted, but can anyone link to the previous series' on YouTube? I've searched and searched, but can only find brief clips, not whole episodes. Thanks Smile

ppeatfruit · 12/09/2014 12:57

thedrummers I think that that's the case on all beeb programs; you have to buy a special memory stick type thing (sorry I'm not well up on techie stuff Grin) to watch the whole programmes.

Jux Puff pastry is very tricky to get right, even Saint Deels says to buy it!!

thedrummerswife · 12/09/2014 13:12

Oh? Where do I get the memory stick?

ppeatfruit · 12/09/2014 14:18

From an Apple or whatever, Currys, Dixons type shop (I think).

thedrummerswife · 12/09/2014 14:23

OK thanks Smile

ppeatfruit · 12/09/2014 14:56

Extra Slice tonight Grin did I read upthread that Diana'a on ? That'll be interesting to see Grin

DoctorLawn · 12/09/2014 20:40

I've got a GBBO book bought purely for the picture of Rob from Season 2

TickledOnion · 12/09/2014 21:28

Anyone watching Extra Slice? Poor Diana, what a horrible thing to have happened to her. Hope she recovers soon.

IScreamForIceCream · 12/09/2014 22:14

Diana was a bit... snippy. But maybe she was just uncomfortable being on the show. Poor her, imagine being 70 and having a lifetime of fantastic cookery and eating behind you, and then losing your sense of taste and smell - in the midst of a baking show at that.

She looked very well though -had the standard post reality show makeover too.

I knew MNers would not let me down! Grin

Idontknowhowtohelpher · 12/09/2014 22:52

I felt sorry for Diana. She looked really nervous when talking about the freezer incident and visibly relaxed when they moved on.
And what was the point of having Frances and Glenn on? They didn't have time to say anything useful.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 12/09/2014 22:56

Looking forward to watching extra slice tomorrow (taped) even though I have just read all about it!

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 12/09/2014 22:59

A question I have been pondering though. Why is this thread so empty? Don't get me wrong, everyone is lovely and I like that it doesn't move too fast, but I would have thought there would be shed loads of MNers interested in GBBO. I mean the X Factor threads are chockers.....

bringbackfonzi · 12/09/2014 23:25

Yes, I wondered that. Is there a GBBO thread somewhere else we don't know about?
I felt sorry for Diana tonight but I wish she could have said a bit more about the 'incident' in her own defence. Like, 'I took it out knowing Ian would be over straight away and find it' or even ' I made a silly mistake and regret it but I was very flustered that day'.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 12/09/2014 23:35

I've got a horrible feeling people are getting bored with it. Sad

DeWee · 12/09/2014 23:41

I've just watched it, and Diana looked close to tears imo for most of it. Felt really sorry for her.

ItsNotEasyBeingGreen · 13/09/2014 08:16

I don't think people are bored with it as such.... It's just this series in my opinion doesn't have any contestants I particularly dislike or any contestants I really want to win. And because of that, although I'm watching every single episode twice I'm not really taking about it.

ppeatfruit · 13/09/2014 08:35

Yes bringback IIW Diana I'd 've thought carefully and written down what I was going to say (she may have short term memory loss). She came across as still being unfeeling.

IMO It's not so exciting because all the contestants are very good so there's not much to choose between them.
