Is there a petition anywhere to try and get RTD back? Sad Tardis

Pixel · 24/08/2014 00:17

That's a point actually. We had kids everywhere trying to copy the 'don't blink' thing, hope they don't try to copy 'don't breathe'. They wouldn't actually pass out from holding their breath would they?

Davros · 24/08/2014 00:26

Glad to see this thread is in the right place! I like PC but would not have cast him at The Doctor, way too obvious but I'm all in favour of an older Doctor. We enjoyed it including the new titles, and agree that the worst part was the MS cameo. Looking forward to some proper family viewing for Saturday nights. DD is 11 and loves it, she has been watching since the new version started in 2005 so was only 2-3 I'm shocked to say. She has never turned a hair

LiviaDruscillaAugusta · 24/08/2014 00:36

The wedding ring is covered by a special ring - apparently he didn't want to keep taking his ring off while filming, plus he always wears it in his roles. I loved it - I had very high hopes because I love Capaldi and it was even better than I expected. The first post regen episode is always a bit odd, but I think it's going to be great.

Jux · 24/08/2014 01:10

I enjoyed it - taped it for dd who is camping atm, so I'll get to see it again when she watches it. I thought PC gave a good performance (as he would) and I think I will like his Doctor. I liked MS. Wasn't so keen on DT, he was all right, but no more. Didn't really watch CE, and gave up on Dr Who when Peter Davison got the role. Had watched it since the first episode back in the 60s. And Patrick Troughton is still my favourite Doctor.

I do wish they would put it on around 6 on a Saturday though.

Hope Clara stays.

Pixel · 24/08/2014 01:35

I didn't mind it being on later because it loses a lot of atmosphere when it's bright sunshine outside. Perhaps I need thicker curtains Wink.

MadamedeChevreuse · 24/08/2014 08:34

Speak for yourself op - loved capaldi, he was brilliant, knew he would be.

it's just that its never been as good since Russel t davies stopped writing it, has it...

VirtualPointyHat · 24/08/2014 08:36

I am mostly upset at how abusive Madam Vastra is.

Tell me I am not the only one seeing that?

Onesleeptillwembley · 24/08/2014 09:00

Absolutely hated most of it, and him. Don't get the Capaldi thing some of you have, either. Urgh. Think it may be new writers as well.
Do love Lizard woman, wife and servant though. They'd make a great spin off.

SirChenjin · 24/08/2014 09:36

Abusive in what way?! And to whom?

OwlCapone · 24/08/2014 09:38

I thought he was great. The doctor you see at the end is more like the one who'll be there for the rest of his stint in the tardis. Ignore the mad one.

OwlCapone · 24/08/2014 09:43

the 'dont breathe' thing pissed me off, they didnt NEED to hold their breath, its perfectly possible to breath silently and imperceptibly enough for it to look/feel like you're not breathing if you do it slowly

And you know how imaginary clockwork cyborgs sense breathing do you...? :o

OwlCapone · 24/08/2014 09:56

I really liked Amy , she had a bit of spark and a personality

She had the spark and personality of a sulky red setter. IMO.

SirChenjin · 24/08/2014 09:59

Amy seemed to confuse acting with speakingveryveryveryfastandwavingherarmsaboutandgurningalot

Mrsjayy · 24/08/2014 10:01

I love him he was amazing and very funny delivery and I loved him

Trills · 24/08/2014 10:01

If you try very hard it is possible to faint from holding your breath.

Most people can't/wont try that hard though.

And of course you start breathing again straight away.

Mrsjayy · 24/08/2014 10:04

Did I mention I loved him. The whole episode was so well written very funny and sad strax is hilarious although he looks a bit darker than usual I think he has been fake baked

trixymalixy · 24/08/2014 10:05

I thought he was great! I'm looking forward to the rest of the series.

VirtualPointyHat · 24/08/2014 10:05

Abusive to Jenny - keeps referring to her as an ape, has to act the maid role even when not in company, and has her standing there in lingerie as something to look at

Mrsjayy · 24/08/2014 10:09

But jenny is an ape to her remember she is supposed to be blunt and she is s lizard lady in a marraige withva human or ape as she sees it.. never thought id ne saying that on a Sunday morning

3littlefrogs · 24/08/2014 10:10

It just seemed to me that having spent loads of time and money on all the hype and promotion, they suddenly thought - "Oh crikey, we had better write a script. Lets have a dinosaur, some flames and - err - ..."

I hope it improves, but maybe there are just no more new ideas.

LumpySpacedPrincess · 24/08/2014 10:12

I loved it. Loved the references to Rome and the whole "new face" thing, wonder what that's all about.

I also really like Clara.

Wonder who Missy is?

SirChenjin · 24/08/2014 10:18

What Mrsjayy said...I think you may be overthinking things Virtual, but in a nice way Grin

Mrsjayy · 24/08/2014 10:20

I really liked the where have I seen that face bit made me think ooo maybe he takes the face of people he couldn't save or some thing, I think madam and jenny mght have a mistresses servant thing going on Grin

TroelsNextCampaignManager · 24/08/2014 11:05

I didn't post last night as I had really conflicting feelings about the ep and wanted to (literally) sleep on it.

I've watched Doctor Who since 1973/1974 so getting used to a new doctor isn't the problem. I think PC will be a great doctor but once again there were elements of the episode and dialogue I hated - and I think that's all down to Moffat's writing.

Bits I hated:

  • constant references to appearance and youth. It's a new Doctor, we get that, we didn't need to be hit over the head with it over and over again. It's just so insulting to the audience - who accept dinosaurs in Victorian London, daleks, cyberman etc. An older doctor isn't more unbelievable/unacceptable than that!
  • the slo-mo shots of Vastra and her gang and Clara with swords at their necks. Utterly rubbish. It was supposed to be a moment of high drama but it just looked cliched and (difficult in Doctor Who!) completely unrealistic for them to be in exactly that position. And Clara only remembers the don't breathe thing when they are at that exact point? Lazy writing. These characters are all intelligent and brave, yet they weren't clever enough to think of a strategy to get themselves out of that position? It just didn't ring true with what we know about these characters, imho.
  • 11 phoning Clara to ask her to stick with PC. No, just no. If the companion is there as a cypher for us, the viewer, then it's Matt Smith talking to us to ask us to give PC a go. Again, so insulting to the viewer. They've never felt the need to do it before. If you are confident you have picked the right actor for the part you don't need to beg the audience to come with you. It was just a sign of weakness/ lack of confidence and sentimental pap to boot.
  • Agreeing with the pp, some of Vastra's treatment of Jenny in private as well as public was rubbish, actually. I particularly hated the fact Vastra had Jenny posing in her lingerie while she was working because it was nice to have something pretty in the background or words to that effect. It was so sexist - the fact it was delivered by a female prehistoric lizard was neither here nor there, because it was written by Moffat and it's another example of his inherent sexism shining through. It added NOTHING to the plot, it was just gratuitous. Really HATED it.

Bits I liked :

  • nod to the clockwork droids and Girl in the Fireplace, complete with Doctor on a horse (mmmm)
  • the whole "did he fall or was he pushed?" question that hangs over the end of the ep
  • Capaldi looking promising as a darker doctor, but still humorous
  • Michelle Gomez - love her, but am slightly worried she's just the Doctor's next custom-made psychopath. We've had that before! Surely the writing team have some new ideas??

There endeth the vent (for now).
