Also, Mrsjayy he did save Caecilius in Fires of Pompeii - in fact he, his wife and children were the only people the Doctor did save.
Frobisher does not count as the Doctor was never part of the Torchwood universe; he may have been mentioned/alluded to once or twice but was never in the stories so was never in a position to be able to save Frobisher.

Mrsjayy · 24/08/2014 11:15

Oh so he did well what I said was rubbish then maybe he takes his face from people who have imprinted on him

PumpkinBones · 24/08/2014 11:17

I liked it, although I think it will take a few episodes to get a sense of how PC's doctor will be.
Matt smith was ok, but following David Tennant was tricky...we got into It in the first place because DS1 was absolutely obsessed with DT and we watched his series over and over.
He was 3 at the the time this obsession began...nothing in the programme ever bothered him, he was more disturbed by the Numbertaker in number jacks.
It wasn't just DT that made those series amazing though but the additional characters River Song (I know she is important in the MS ones too) captain jack etc...and the stories were great. I hope PC has similar to do justice to as he is a great actor and I think a good choice for the doctor.

VirtualPointyHat · 24/08/2014 11:28

I do have a long history of overthinking DW - but it nevertheless made me feel very uncomfortable watching it.

OTOH I loved Capaldi

Idontseeanysontarans · 24/08/2014 11:29

I do think there was far too much in the script to try and placate the 'Capaldi's too old bring back Matt Smith' brigade in all honesty and MS's cameo was all out fan pleasing, nothing more. It did explain the phone being off the hook in TOTD I suppose though.
On the other hand that bit where he asks her to actually see Him was wonderful.

BertieBotts · 24/08/2014 11:33

DH reckons the age thing was more for the audience "Don't worry, he's old but he's still the doctor".

I liked it but cautiously. The first couple of episodes after regeneration are always better in retrospect - it's hard because they mimic the previous doctor, and they are often confused - and if you watch the way he died last time, he has a lot of reason to be confused, it was different to other times. In the next episode or the one after his new character will probably come through a lot more.

Didn't really get what the woman at the end was all about but then DH said "Didn't you notice the heavy hints all through the episode about an unknown woman?" so he reckons that's what this season's arc is going to be about.

Mrsjayy · 24/08/2014 11:37

I agree with him Bertie there was a lot of he is too old when it was announced and kids and younger people watch it they are used to the sprightly matt smith and David Tennant running about I think they were just explain ing that

Idontseeanysontarans · 24/08/2014 11:39

It would definitely interesting to watch Deep Breath after the end of this series when he's established his own character.
If you think about it though Tennants first episode was very dark and he established that he wasn't actually a particularly nice man, I think his good looks made a lot of people over look that though.

Mrsjayy · 24/08/2014 11:46

The cynical tennant loving matt smith hating dd loved him and cant wait for next week

BertieBotts · 24/08/2014 11:47

Have read more of the thread - agree the sexism was gross and their relationship came across as odd. I also Hmm faced at Vastra's "People are apes. Men are monkeys." Can't go one episode without putting something in there, can he?

BertieBotts · 24/08/2014 11:49

It really did have to be for the audience - I mean the doctor's been old before! Look at the first doctor!

BertieBotts · 24/08/2014 11:51

And he has a whole set of new regenerations since the special 50th anniversary episode.

Mrsjayy · 24/08/2014 11:57

I have no problem with him being an old duffer Grin I just think the script was written around some of the reactions pc got which was unfair imo. We live with social media reaction is instant these days in days of old we just accepted a new DOCTOR and enjoyed it for what it was,

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 24/08/2014 12:15

I wasn't a big fan of the last series - it all got a bit 'meh' for me although I couldn't give you specifics of exactly why. Maybe Moffat as a showrunner just doesn't work for me despite the fact that his individual episodes prior to that are among my favourites, anyway...

I liked Peter Capaldi's Doctor. I liked it yesterday and I have a big feeling that he's going overtake Tennant as 'favourite New Who' Doctor by the end. I enjoyed the episode, not necessarily for the story - I don't expect much for the first episode of a new regeneration tbh, but I loved all the little continuity references and the flashes of his new character (although is it new? He's always been morally ambiguous, he's not human, he's old, he's experienced terrifying things - the genocide of his entire planet. Even when he's fluffy, it's a mask over the scarier depths)

Re. the credits. I liked them. I like them even more because the BBC saw a fan made set of credits and then liked them so much they used them. Brilliant (and I have a soft spot for steampunk. Steampunk Doctor Who is lovely)

Also, the Clara now isn't the same Clara that travelled through all his incarnations, or am I misremembering that? Didn't it all reset? I can understand the weirdness. We are hung up of physical appearance, it would be a shock for someone to have a completely different face/body and take a while, and let's be fair it wasn't that long, to marry up the body and the personality (and that's changed too to a certain extent)

I've read a few articles that have implied that Capaldi himself isn't enamoured with Moffat's take on the Doctors character. That he was all smiles and agreement until the contract was signed and solid and then let him know that there were certain things he absolutely would not be doing (flirting/romance) I'd love to know if that's true.

ShutUpPan · 24/08/2014 12:30

Watched my first ever episode of the Dr last night, (just aware of media bits previously)so absolutely nothing to compare to.
When they landed in Glasgow did Clara really say "They still won't let you vote"?
As a weegie Scot and adoring Malcolm Tucker it was v intriguing. So,

  • what is Clara's role other than to look v pretty and to be rescued?
  • thought the Scottishness/not a love interest/age things were overdone.
  • agree, no need for Matt Smith to bob up, better scripting could have covered the 'look at me for who I am' angle.
  • still trying to find my feet on the lizard/marriage thing (though the posing scene was just Hmm
  • will be interested in how they replace Ms Coleman.
Jux · 24/08/2014 12:34

Obviously fan pleasing in parts, heavy handed, but I suppose they need to keep the viewing figures up, and they lost a few DT loving viewers because MS wasn't as pretty and they don't want to lose more just because PC is older (my age, or less, he is Blush ). Hey, the Doctor's been around for a long time, he and his writers can take it, and so can I. As long as it doesn't take over, that is.

I think I still want it to be a kids' show which some adults enjoy too. I am a dinosaur though.

Oh that reminds me - the real, major error in the episode! That dinosaur should have been feathered, shouldn't it? Wink

TroelsNextCampaignManager · 24/08/2014 12:39

Jux as a long time viewer I can forgive a lot in Doctor Who, but the blatant, gratuitous sexism in last night's ep really made my blood boil. Who let Moffat get away with that script? What message does it send to young viewers? A woman is just eye-candy while someone else in the room is doing the hard work?

Capaldi is not my issue, far from it, I think he's a great actor and I was looking forward to his take on the role. My problems are all with Moffat.

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 24/08/2014 12:59

Mrsdmitri, i watched the whole episode (from opening credits, to pocketwatches and mechanical bad guys) thinking, this entire episode is written for the steampunk community Grin

I liked him. I hated matt smith though. Opposite to opinions here though, i preferred amy with him than clara. Clara just seems like an afterthought in all the episodes.

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 24/08/2014 13:02

I'm wondering if last night showed hints towards the first ever ape/lizard lesbian divorce storyline?

Jux · 24/08/2014 13:10

Troels, yes I do agree with you. I had been talking about the refs to PC being old, wrinkly and grey and the "Look, he's Scottish just like DT, so please keep watching anyway" attitude.

I know some people like Moffat (at least a bit), but I didn't think he was ever really better than any other talented writer who worked best as just that. Not the man to be in charge of anything. His judgement is awry imo, and he needs someone to keep him in check.

BBC - just say NO! Grin

Trills · 24/08/2014 13:24

David Tennant wasn't Scottish as The Doctor though, was he?

Mrsjayy · 24/08/2014 13:26

No he had an english accent

BucktoothedGirlinLuxembourg · 24/08/2014 13:27

Not a DW fan but really enjoyed capadi's turn.

hated matt smith.

Mrsjayy · 24/08/2014 13:28

Im not keen on moffat he is like an over excited puppy trying to please everybody imo

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 24/08/2014 13:36

They didn't let DT keep his own accent as they thought two regional accents in a row wouldn't go down well. Absolute bollocks if you ask me. I'm glad they let PC keep it, it's stupid for him to have be 'English' when he's not even from Earth!
