I wasn't a big fan of the last series - it all got a bit 'meh' for me although I couldn't give you specifics of exactly why. Maybe Moffat as a showrunner just doesn't work for me despite the fact that his individual episodes prior to that are among my favourites, anyway...
I liked Peter Capaldi's Doctor. I liked it yesterday and I have a big feeling that he's going overtake Tennant as 'favourite New Who' Doctor by the end. I enjoyed the episode, not necessarily for the story - I don't expect much for the first episode of a new regeneration tbh, but I loved all the little continuity references and the flashes of his new character (although is it new? He's always been morally ambiguous, he's not human, he's old, he's experienced terrifying things - the genocide of his entire planet. Even when he's fluffy, it's a mask over the scarier depths)
Re. the credits. I liked them. I like them even more because the BBC saw a fan made set of credits and then liked them so much they used them. Brilliant (and I have a soft spot for steampunk. Steampunk Doctor Who is lovely)
Also, the Clara now isn't the same Clara that travelled through all his incarnations, or am I misremembering that? Didn't it all reset? I can understand the weirdness. We are hung up of physical appearance, it would be a shock for someone to have a completely different face/body and take a while, and let's be fair it wasn't that long, to marry up the body and the personality (and that's changed too to a certain extent)
I've read a few articles that have implied that Capaldi himself isn't enamoured with Moffat's take on the Doctors character. That he was all smiles and agreement until the contract was signed and solid and then let him know that there were certain things he absolutely would not be doing (flirting/romance) I'd love to know if that's true.
