I liked PC. Didn't love it as an episode but I thought he did the initial disorientation very well, with a few nice flappy Matt Smith mannerisms. I've always taken a few episodes to warm to a new Doctor but he has something of the Tom Baker madness about him, and Tom Baker was my first Doctor, so I think I'm going to like him. DS, on the other hand, stomped off to play Minecraft after five minutes, only to come running back into the room as soon as he heard Matt Smith's voice. This is his first regeneration and he's taking it badly....

pointythings · 23/08/2014 23:02

I can see it being rated 12, really. My 11yo DD2 (who is a sensitive soul) was on my lap in the bit where Clara walked through the passage with all the robots in stasis. It was properly scary in placed (and the better for it). DDs have only been allowed Dr Who from last year - they are both the kind to have nightmares. We do have almost the whole lot on DVD so when this runs our and we are out of Due South (our current DVD fodder) we will start them on Christopher Ecclestone and work our way through.

Nerf · 23/08/2014 23:03

Wasn't keen on the Matt Smith cameo at all - agree why bring him into it now. Was really y hoping for a manly sweaty Tucker esque type doctor not some weirded out bloke at the beginning.
Oh well if Clara goes it might get good.

I am astonished that suicide was promoted, on what is essentially a kid's / teen's programme, as a way of dealing with problems.

I got sick of hearing about lizard lady and her "maid" being married by about the fourth time it was mentioned.

I thought the plot was just lazy writing.

All in all very disappointing.

Greydog · 23/08/2014 23:08

I really loathe the lizard woman, and her retinue - pointless. I hope that the writing will improve - thought the story line was poor. But hopefully Capaldi will get better scripts. He's got to be better than that capering oaf Smith

ExitPursuedByAKoalaBear · 23/08/2014 23:11

Strange story line. Laboured themes.

But loved it. Bring it on.

todayisnottheday · 23/08/2014 23:11

The marriage is old news just made a bit more plain this time, hopefully for a good reason but we'll see.

It was pg at our cinema (vue) but I'd never think dr who was toddler viewing really. Dd was 9/10 when she starred watching but she's a bit of a Sci Fi child!

CalamityKate1 · 23/08/2014 23:11

DS and I were very dubious about PC beforehand but to our mutual relief we loved it :)

Love Vastra and Jenny (and Strax of course)

Have never taken to Clara. Far too chirpy, yipping away with her perky little remarks.

Idontseeanysontarans · 23/08/2014 23:21

Well I like him Smile
The episode was about 20 minutes too long and PC doesn't do manic particularly well, he was much better when he'd calmed down a bit. Clara seemed to have actually been given a decent role in this episode as well.
I'm whispering this but I actually like the paternoster gang...
All in all as new a doctor episodes go it was pretty good I thought. No more pretty boys, flirting and soap opera stuff, just Doctor Who. It's a good thing..
Those titles aren't great though, too clangy.

Pixel · 23/08/2014 23:24

Much better than I was expecting. Not sure about the aliens living in victorian London and no one turning a hair and was also a bit Hmm at the way they kept going on about the Doctor choosing his face. Since when has he been able to choose?

Also that was the worst fake horse riding I've ever seen Grin (and besides the Doctor can ride a horse perfectly well).

Still, overall not bad at all. Didn't hate the new Tardis and I'm glad to see he has a comfy chair at last though I didn't spot anything for Clara to sit on.

ElephantsNeverForgive · 23/08/2014 23:25

It was dreadful, no original ideas, we've done scavenging part human robots a 1000x better before.

The Santaran, should never be seen out side the Sarah Jane mysteries, he's just annoying in the adult version.

Yes they are married lesbians, yes all very PC, but do you have to labour the point and have them kiss, honestly most 11yo are over that in 2014.

Clara is really annoying, I really liked Amy , she had a bit of spark and a personality Clara is to old school soppy companion.

The phone call was stupid and unnecessary

TortoiseUpATreeAgain · 23/08/2014 23:29

Romana II chose her face, so it's clear that Time Lords can, at least sometimes. The Doctor never seems to have any control over it, though -- I suppose the argument is that if he's wound up with a face he knows from someone he's met, is that his subconscious telling him something (and incidentally getting the hang of face-choosing in a way that his conscious mind has never managed).

SuburbanRhonda · 23/08/2014 23:29

Then I decided that maybe I am overthinking the dynamics of lesbian inter-species marriage in a popular science fantasy show.

Well, someone's got to do it Smile

Loved PC, he has so much depth as an actor.

DrankSangriaInThePark · 23/08/2014 23:30

I bloody loved him.
But then, I am a Smith hater.
Mme Vastra and the whole Victorian thing,as others have said, has so had its day though.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 23/08/2014 23:33

Well, I loved it. Smile

Only bad bit for me was Matt Smith - overblown and over-emotional, and really showed up by Capaldi. I will be so glad not to have all the flirting bollocks.

I was sad for the opposiite reason to elephants about the married lesbians - I'd liked them doing that as an entirely positive storyline (which is still far too rare), and was pissed off they had to go all edgy by having Madam Vastra flirt with Clara and so on. Just leave them as a boring happy couple, thanks!

Trills · 23/08/2014 23:34

He has seen that face before. In Pompeii. Conspiracy theories, please?

TheLostPelvicFloorOfPoosh · 23/08/2014 23:36

I had managed to forget about the awful fake horse riding!

I actually cringed during that sequence

pigsinmud · 23/08/2014 23:36

I think dr who needs a break. All a bit boring and same as before. Not keen on PC so far. Ds2 (14) thought it was aimed at 7 year olds. Perhaps I'm going deaf, but I couldn't seem to hear PC for about the first half of the episode.

PricillaQueenOfTheDessert · 23/08/2014 23:37

Promising start. I wasn't sure about David Tennant at the beginning but I actually cried when he left Blush
Didn't watch Matt Smith, thought it became a bit CBeebies.
Hated Amy, Clara is better but still a bit irritating. Glad she is leaving.
The story line was AWFUL, just awful. Steven Moffat has had his time and just tries to be too clever. He needs to go.

Exactly, beer.

Plus not wild about the 'maid' thing.

SomethingVicardThisWayComes · 23/08/2014 23:47

well i liked the new doctor....a bit more grown up i thought.

Pixel · 24/08/2014 00:00

schilke I kept turning the volume up because I couldn't hear what was being said so it wasn't just you.

Yes 'yawn' about the lesbian couple. We know don't keep on about it! (besides, who married them exactly, the local vicar?).

It's slightly odd how we've now got heavy emphasis on the scottish thing when Tennant wasn't allowed to keep his own accent (when really, who would have cared?). Bet he's a bit mifffed!

Whiskwarrior · 24/08/2014 00:07

DD and I went to the cinema to watch it - and we loved it!

We also loved Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant and Matt Smith and got extremely attached to each of them, reluctant to let them go and took time to warm to each new incarnation.

But we did warm to each new incarnation and we loved PC by the end of the episode. He's farking brilliant, the writing is as strong as ever and the baddie was creepy.

DD cried when Matt Smith came on though - and she sat clutching her sonic screwdriver throughout the episode!
