So many scientific mistakes/plot holes. And another retread of the whole "impossible dilemma, no correct answer ... oh, there was a correct answer after all and everything works out perfectly in the end thanks to the Doctor" storyline. I thought this series was gradually getting better as it went on but it took a real step back last night.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 05/10/2014 16:58

You cannot have a unicellular organism with an exoskeleton, joints and teeth. They described a prokaryote correctly, whilst looking at something that clearly wasn't Confused

And I'm not a physicist, but the gravity explanation made no sense either.

(And that would be a massive egg to be laid by a creature who was curled up in an egg that size just moment earlier!)

HolyQuadrityDrinkFeckArseGirls · 05/10/2014 20:27

I'm Grin that you are expecting scientific accuracy, peeps.

Pixel · 05/10/2014 22:39

Why would something that had just hatched (a baby) be laying an egg straight away? Does that ever happen?
Probably best not to think to much about it tbh or you start asking all sorts of questions such as will the egg need fertilizing and who/what will do it given the creature is supposed to be unique?

Also, when Hermione Norris was saying about all the bits of the egg hitting the Earth and destroying it, Clara (or maybe the annoying brat) said ''Oh but it's only eggshell". Erm, well people would have visited the moon quite a lot by 2049 (or whenever) I'd have thought and would surely have noticed if it wasn't made of rock. And if the 'shell' was made of rock anyway the original point stands. Totally stupid.

Can you tell the more I think about it all the more annoyed I get? Last night I was traumatised by the drama (and brilliant acting, DW take note) of Casualty so the full horror didn't really sink in.

Oh and Tardis just because I've never done one Wink.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/10/2014 08:34

Frustratingly I can't get on this thread on my ipad as it crashes it.

Aaaaaargh at the basic science flaws this time - from flames burning in space and giving off smoke in a way that would only happen in an atmosphere to the awful awful physics - where was the baby getting its extra mass from??? and how did the gravity change so much instantly and where did the eggshell rocks go, the utterly wrong biology and back to the crap physics - how could it lay a moon with mass equal to the old moon, where did that new mass come from.
And if the tides were such an issue, why were they standing on a perfectly normal looking beach?

I don't mind Doctor who bending physics rules - of course it does, but when they ignore basic basic things, its doing children who are watching a massive disservice.

Thumbs down for that episode.

Jux · 06/10/2014 08:51

OYBBK, I doubt any children were watching at that time, though Grin, and they're the only ones who are likely to have enjoyed that episode.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/10/2014 12:05

That is a fair point Jux!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/10/2014 12:06

I think it made me a leeetle bit cross Grin

IrianofWay · 06/10/2014 12:12

I like him.

NotDavidTennant · 06/10/2014 12:14

Also, the moon creature thing was flying in space by flapping it's wings, which wouldn't work without any atmosphere to push against.

And didn't the astronaut woman say that humans had long given up going to space, and yet there was a functioning moonbase that didn't look like it was meant to be that old (although I missed the first 5 minutes so may have got the wrong end of the stick on that one).

YonicScrewdriver · 08/10/2014 23:08

Christ, that was crap.

There's an SJA episode where the moon approaches earth, causing havoc, then gets put back again without any other trouble. Bah.

YonicScrewdriver · 08/10/2014 23:09

NDT, that was private exploration - but the air within was all tickety boo and hadn't leaked away over 10 years despite other things like the lighting being dodgy.

Bah.

confuddledDOTcom · 10/10/2014 07:39

i think this series is proving the point I've made for years, good actor being let down by a bad head writer. i feel sorry for Matt that he never had chance to be as awesome as he could have been and I'm really hoping Peter isn't let down so badly.

SchrodingersFerret · 10/10/2014 09:04

I only half watched the spiders, but I quite enjoyed the episode, as I have every episode so far. The date one was a bit dull, I grant you.

I'm enjoying the drama of Capaldi as a Doctor who keeps bollixing up spectacularly in terms of relationships, but I do think they need to start warming him up significantly or I might get a bit bored of mean and grumpy.

HSAT, the kids are loving every second, and rewatching incessantly.

confuddledDOTcom · 10/10/2014 15:46

it feels like he's still stuck in regeneration sickness.

SchrodingersFerret · 10/10/2014 16:05

Well something's going on clearly. Perhaps it's to do with the nature of this regen, and the fact that it's one born out of time, so to speak - an 'extra' that he wasn't really supposed to have.

Jux · 11/10/2014 21:28

Confuddled, couldn't agree with you more. Hope they drop Moffat ASAP.

DD are really really really happy that Clara is staying!

MrsCakesPrecognition · 11/10/2014 21:42

I've been catching up with lots of new episodes and I rather think I'm enjoying it.

BTW is it just me or when the Doctor is talking to himself, half the conversation sounds like Tom Baker?

Monroe · 11/10/2014 21:51

Are you my mummy Smile

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/10/2014 21:52

He is rather Tom Baker (including jelly babies tonight)

Rivercam · 11/10/2014 22:00

Didn't really enjoy the first episode, but quite liking the 'new' doctor now. My eldest son finds him a bit serious, and preferred the slightly more jokey and jovial Matt and a David.

I thought tonight's mummy was a bit scary. The kids were fine - I was the one wanting to hide behind a cushion!

happybubblebrain · 11/10/2014 22:08

I loved Matt Smith. I miss him.

This new Doctor is humourless, heartless and completely lacking in charisma. He seems really cold and mean. But he does have a presence and isn't bad at acting, I hope he grows on me. I liked this episode, Foxes should have been on much longer though.

happybubblebrain · 11/10/2014 22:09

Also, he looks like an eagle.

CrumpleHornedSnorkack · 11/10/2014 22:11

I love the new Doctor. He works perfectly in a post Day of the Doctor realisation, a hark back to pre fall of Galifray days

Oakmaiden · 11/10/2014 22:13

BTW is it just me or when the Doctor is talking to himself, half the conversation sounds like Tom Baker?

Oh yes. I am finding the slips in this character fascinating. Moffat is very good at people and relationships.

Just a shame he isn't so great at plots....
