Remembering that this regeneration was given by the TimeLords and is presumably the first of a new 'set', there are definite resemblances to the very first doctor - much more 'alien', remote, sometimes appearing heartless and selfish. And there's still the question of 'why this face?'

MrsCakesPrecognition · 11/10/2014 22:33

The new doctor is strangely vulnerable. Lost in Clara's world. Clara is definitely calling all the shots in the relationship, which makes a change from the Doctor always being in control.

Oakmaiden · 11/10/2014 22:52

And there's still the question of 'why this face?'

Which is interesting - because it was inferred (if I am remembering correctly) that saving Capaldi's character in the Fires of Pompeii was the first time the Doctor had let compassion over-rule his aversion to "changing history". And then the Doctor comes back with a hugely dispassionate character, but the face of someone he has saved....

I think Moffat is really playing around with the dichotomies in the Doctor's character....

LeapingOverTheWall · 11/10/2014 22:59

Friend reckons that the doctor reminds him of Granny Weatherwax (Terry Pratchett character) who does what's right rather than what's nice.

Does anyone reckon the continuity error with Clara's hair clip/parting is Important? It was just after that she had a complete change of heart about staying.....

SchrodingersFerret · 11/10/2014 23:08

What I want to know is... who is Perkins??

Oakmaiden · 11/10/2014 23:11

Leaping - I notice that having been short this episode, it gets long again in the trailer for the next.

Bunbaker · 11/10/2014 23:32

Perkins was played by Frank Skinner.

I loved this episode. It has been the best in this series by a long way. What fantastic start to the story.

confuddledDOTcom · 12/10/2014 00:58

Loved this episode, squealed at the Tom Baker slip but thought the mummy joke was a bit Hmm already done that joke!. It was funny when David did it unscripted but it was too forced this time.

SchrodingersFerret · 12/10/2014 09:45

I know Perkins was played by Frank Skinner. I'm asking if there's any more to the character. The Doctor was a bit weird with him at the end.

Bunbaker · 12/10/2014 09:59

I don't know then. I wondered if he was called Perkins as a throw back to Perkins in The Railway Children.

YonicScrewdriver · 12/10/2014 10:01

I think the Doctor wasn't quite sure if he was going to need another companion straight away. He normally does a few journeys alone after a break up, right?

SchrodingersFerret · 12/10/2014 10:09

Well I kind of surprised myself by really enjoying Skinner's performance, and really thought he played it with a very subtle air of menace, so wondered if there was a oblique clue an that we might see him again anyway. You never can tell with modern Who and the ubiquitous story arc stuff.

Bunbaker · 12/10/2014 10:12

I enjoyed it as well. I liked that this episode had a proper plot instead of being disjointed and "too clever" like some of the other episodes.

Nerf · 12/10/2014 11:12

I've just realised that I think he's slowly mutating into Cumberpatch's Sherlock. All the am I a good man, and how he would have just kept going with the people until it worked. I really really don't see why the doctor would care if he was good or not. And why always human companions?

OP posts:
Tanaqui · 12/10/2014 19:44

I think Clara had her hair rolled under and the "short" bits were layers or extensions at the front.

YonicScrewdriver · 12/10/2014 19:55

"And why always human companions?"

Well, the conceit is that Earth is special to the Doctor, so unsurprising that he ends up with humans. We need to see the doctor through the companion's eyes. And let's not forget budget...

YonicScrewdriver · 12/10/2014 19:56

The Doctor cares if he is good after Gallifrey etc.

MrsCakesPrecognition · 12/10/2014 19:57

If he is thousands of years old, perhaps there have been a selection of alien companions of whom we know nothing.

YonicScrewdriver · 12/10/2014 20:04

Yy. I feel like there have been past humanoid but non Earth companions - Nessa? Adric?

WhereTheWildlingsAre · 12/10/2014 20:10

I quite liked the idea of Perkins as a new companion. His clever quips showed that he wasn't phased by the Doctor.

YonicScrewdriver · 12/10/2014 20:18

Capt Jack wasn't from Earth.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/10/2014 20:53

I'm pretty sure he was.

SchrodingersFerret · 12/10/2014 21:03

Captain jack was from the Boeshane peninsula if memory serves. Your spelling may vary.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/10/2014 21:16

Ahhh. Fair enough!

YonicScrewdriver · 12/10/2014 21:16

Yup. The cat people looked after him when he was v old.
