Gutted, we are all surprised at how much we hate Peter capaldi! Was so looking forward to this! Its pants!

Since when does the Doctor hate ex soldiers - um, Brigadier, anyone?

Pixel · 27/09/2014 23:31

Yes and didn't we have the Brigadier's daughter too at one point?

YonicScrewdriver · 27/09/2014 23:38

Yep, in DoTD.

But she's not an ex soldier. Come to that, Rory was a soldier for a bit, albeit accidentally.

I understand his dislike of war but he's never thought soldiers = thick..

fishdishwish · 27/09/2014 23:39

He's always had a pricklyish relationship with military types - even with the Brig at times (there's the comment in a Pertwee story about military intelligence being a contradiction in terms).

BertieBotts · 27/09/2014 23:41

The overprotective dad thing is doing my nut in. Clara no you don't have to explain your boyfriend choices to the doctor. FFS! I hated the little doe eyed expression she looked at the doctor with too once he "approved". And Danny was being a bit of an arse about everything too. Waaah you lied to me. Yes because you can just announce on a first date that for your hobby you go off time travelling with an alien from outer space. He'd have thought she was crazy! It's not like she met the doctor when they'd been married 10 years. Sadface moan, why couldn't you tell me this stuff. Does he really think he would have believed her?? And the "Why do you go?" I wanted her to turn around and say "Why WOULDN'T you go?"

Seems like this episode was all about bulls ramming horns over clara and the alien thing was just because they had to stick something alien in there.

ElephantsNeverForgive · 27/09/2014 23:43

Oh dear! I hated PCs introductory episode, missed the next few, hoped tonight's would be better.

It was awful pixel describes it exactly, very week plot, too much Clara's love life.

Also since when was the Doctor, that dim and stupid when interacting with humans.

Honestly the script would have been bad for the Sara Jane adventures.

Pixel · 27/09/2014 23:52

But she's not an ex soldier

Ah that's right...but she was still in UNIT, have I remembered that bit right?

AGnu · 27/09/2014 23:53

Can someone give me a brief synopsis of the hand-under-the-bed episode please? I chose not to watch it because I'm still terrified of angels & didn't need to add another thing to my list but it seems like there was a lot going on there!

I'm not liking the Doctor's humourless jealousy streak - it's not like him to be bothered about someone distracting his assistants, he just shows them something shiny/exciting to prove to himself that he's much more interesting & they're blatantly not going to leave him! This snippy-ness is pure insecurity with none of the Doctor's usual blasé arrogance.

BertieBotts · 27/09/2014 23:55

The hand under the bed one wasn't scary.

I'm not watching next week - that DOES look scary! Spiders, urgh.

YonicScrewdriver · 28/09/2014 00:00

But Twelve isn't blasé about Clara staying with him - remember the big wobble she had at the beginning.

And he lost Amy because she loved Rory more, after all.

BestIsWest · 28/09/2014 00:09

Well we all really enjoyed it here.

confuddledDOTcom · 28/09/2014 20:17

can someone please tell me they noticed the PCSO's call sign?! I'm starting to think I'm the only one in the world who didConfused

YonicScrewdriver · 28/09/2014 20:19

Oh, no, I didn't, just the parallel with his feet walking round a walled corner. What was it?

gamescompendium · 28/09/2014 20:32

I'm completely confused as to why some people go to Heaven and some people don't, there doesn't seem to be any pattern. Having said that, I'm quite enjoying this series, far more than last series. I didn't mind the smaller scale stories in this series, 45 minutes is too short a time for a big complex story.

HolyQuadrityDrinkFeckArseGirls · 28/09/2014 22:03

Gah, some sexist crap going in this episode. Clara was doing fine in the tine and space but now the PE Wink teacher is here, he will protect her. And if the Doctor pushes her too far, she needs to tell him so he will basically stand up for get. Cause she's a little lady diddums. Feck off, moffat.

UptoapointLordCopper · 28/09/2014 22:09

Holy I've just watched it on iPlayer and have just come on here to say exactly that! Help her, indeed. Hmm

YonicScrewdriver · 28/09/2014 22:21

Mmm, I didn't read it like that. Danny views the doctor as an officer and has some experience in those.

The Doctor is addictive. Look how Amy and Rory tried to quit him. Amy had faith in the doctor; Rory didn't. Amy's faith endangered her. In the end, they lost their 21st century lives for him.

BertieBotts · 28/09/2014 22:28

Re some people going to heaven, I didn't see it that the others weren't necessarily going but they didn't want to show every person arriving, just a little reminder every episode. But perhaps I'm wrong and it is significant.

I do get stabby at Moffat's writing of male/female characters and their interactions, though. When he forgets that he's supposed to be writing a man/woman and just goes with the storyline, he's brilliant. But when it becomes about relationships between the sexes it's awful.

HolyQuadrityDrinkFeckArseGirls · 28/09/2014 22:29

yonic but she is a world-saving time traveller. She doesn't need Danny to mansplain it to her. She's been fighting aliens for yonks, but now she can feel safe because he is every step behind her (that's what he said when he followed her whilst she was distracting the alien and he was invisible following her). Basically she's yet again another female character that needs to be saved and protected by a man ultimately!

HolyQuadrityDrinkFeckArseGirls · 28/09/2014 22:30
YonicScrewdriver · 28/09/2014 22:37

Oh, the one step behind you was mushy.

But "the doctor changes you" has always been the companion's dilemma. Since the reboot, Rose "died" (alternate universe), Martha got out, Donna was brain wiped, Amy and Rory "died" (forced back in time) and Clara sacrificed herself willingly for the Doctor (luckily he could save her). It's a high risk occupation and the risk is addictive.

Monroe · 29/09/2014 08:02

What was the police officers call sign? I didn't catch that at all. I did like the reference to River.

I agree it was far too romance heavy and not enough adventure. And Danny is coming across as dull as dish water at the minute. I wondered if they are actively trying to show the contrast between him and the doctor. And if so will it be significant when Clara chooses to leave. Maybe the doctor does push her too far and she decides she'd rather have the hum drum life with Danny

YonicScrewdriver · 29/09/2014 08:08

Maybe the animosity towards soldiers/Danny is to ensure there's no expectation of Clara and Danny in the tardis, as happened with Amy and Rory.

UptoapointLordCopper · 29/09/2014 09:44

I'll live with Clara deciding to leave, but NOT to go with someone who thinks she needs protecting. How patronising is that!

Is there any reason to think that Clara hasn't thought about all these things that Danny so cleverly knows? I see that in real life, people going "ah but she's going to let herself into this or that if she's not careful" about women who are intelligent and have a track record of thinking of everything. Drives me mad.

IAmNotAMindReader · 29/09/2014 19:33

Clara will either decide to leave or die, we haven't had someone die in a while.

I view Dannys speech about knowing men like the Dr as a less harsh but equally accurate summation of the speech Davros gave in Journeys End (where he says the Dr runs because he is ashamed due to the things he inspires others to do in his name and the aftermath that leaves).
