jux but the episode concluded that those things do not exist and the whole palaver was because the Doctor was scared of the dark?

LeapingOverTheWall · 13/09/2014 20:57

The toy soldier started off in the orphanage, from it's perspective it went Rupert-Danny/Clara's DC-Orson-Clara-young doctor

RustyDalek · 13/09/2014 21:01

From a toyshop, presumably! That was where it started from, it has it's own personal timeline, from 1990 (Rupert/Dan) to 2114 as an heirloom to Orson, then to the end of the universe in Orson's time machine, then in the TARDIS to the boy in the barn (which could be any time in the past or future relative to today). We don't know where it is 'now' - we may find out.....

Glastogirl · 13/09/2014 21:02

Thanks!

Who is Missy and where is 'heaven'? Are they actually dead? Am guessing they'll all reappear somewhen before the end!

RustyDalek · 13/09/2014 21:09

We don't know yet - watch this space! There are a few clues on the BBC Doctor Who website, and in Stephen Moffat's episode guide which was in the Radio Times the week of the first episode - that's probably online somewhere.

RustyDalek · 13/09/2014 21:27

Moffat's Episode Guide reblogged here Potential (mild) spoilers.

Idontseeanysontarans · 13/09/2014 21:33

I've made DS promise to not watch the episode tonight on iplayer, as soon as he sees that figure under the blanket and hears PC saying the rhyme he won't sleep for a week! Grin That was a good episode, best so far I think.
I read a theory that Danny is the brother of Journey Blue that 'got killed' in Into The Dalek.

Nerf · 13/09/2014 21:37

But the boy in the barn returns to the barn to save Gallifre, remember? So must be the doctor and that's why he was thinking about it all. Person Pink must be space person Blues brother.

BrianButterfield · 13/09/2014 21:38

M wary to jumping to conclusions about Orson as so often Moffat messes with you! Who says the g-grandparent he got the figure from was Danny? Maybe it was the Doctor and he got the figure that way....I don't think that's necessarily the case, just we can't assume it came directly to Orson from Danny. Nobody else's timeline works chronologically, after all...

Idontseeanysontarans · 13/09/2014 21:39

The boy in the barn was definitely the Doctor and it was Clara who accidentally are him scared of the dark when she grabbed his foot. That was the only really clear bit of the whole episode! Grin
I'm going to re watch this one when the series ends - some things will make more sense then I think.

RustyDalek · 13/09/2014 21:44

Clara says 'you will come back to this barn' so she obviously thinks it's the Doctor, but she could be wrong. It probably is the doctor, but I never take anything for granted these days...

BestIsWest · 13/09/2014 21:47

I agree there must be a relationship of some kind between either Danny or Orson Pink and Journey Blue. Especially with the soldier theme.

RustyDalek · 13/09/2014 21:48

Have any of you actually had that dream? If I have I don't remember it!

Idontseeanysontarans · 13/09/2014 21:50

I don't remember having it but I was scared of the space under my bed for years! Even when we bought a new bed last year I wanted one with drawers underneath , and not just for storage Grin

RedToothBrush · 13/09/2014 21:52

Didn't Clara go to the barn...

moggiek · 13/09/2014 22:04

I'm 55. I'm still afraid of that space under the bed. That's why I have a divan ...

BertieBotts · 13/09/2014 23:05

I've had a dream that there's been someone in the room but not grabbing my leg.

I thought it was obvious that Orson was Clara and Danny's GGrandson. Which means she's definitely going to marry Danny and have at least one child with him.

Not sure how the toy soldier works into everything... I thought that was a bit odd TBH. But I suspect it was a normal toy from the children's home and then Rupert remembered it, kept it (how? I suppose he could have snuck it from children's home to children's home - and through the army etc! - but surely you'd lose or break it) and passed it down to his son/daughter when they were scared about going to sleep and so on. Then I think the family chain ended when he gave it to Clara - I think he realised exactly who she was at that point.

I think that was a touch unnecessary though and unbelievable. It's more believable that Rupert had the toy, then lost it, then when he became an adult changed his name and chose Dan because he'd decided to join the army and become Dan the Soldier Man.

Perhaps that did happen - that he lost it - but then the Doctor somehow kept it all that time and so Clara reunites Danny with it later because she needs to prove something - I think she will tell him that she's a time traveller.

(Which then makes it stuck in some kind of loop with no clue as to how it got into the loop in the first place! It would go toy shop > children's home > Rupert > lost somewhere. But simultaneously it exist as: Given by adult Clara to adult Danny > passed down from father to son for 3 generations > from Orson to Clara > From Clara to the Doctor > In the TARDIS somewhere > Clara gives to adult Danny [repeat])

Unrelated point - when they first said Orson's name I thought his name was Awesome Pink and I thought it was another Dan from another universe who also hated the name Rupert. And decided to call himself Awesome. Obviously. That's logical Grin

RustyDalek · 13/09/2014 23:11

Have you seen the Doctor who extra, Bertie? Jenna talks about 'the Moffat loop' being a speciality of his - like in Blink, where the Doctor sends the message to Sally Sparrow because she gives him the information about the message he sends her....

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 13/09/2014 23:16

It just said g-g-g-gp though, so couldn't it just be Danny (if he goes in the TARDIS at some point?). Because Clara was distracted into Danny's timeline anyway, so we could have just stayed in it.

BertieBotts · 13/09/2014 23:38

Haha no I didn't see DW Extra. Is that the new name for Confidential? I'm not in the UK so would have to download that specially. The Moffat loop does ring a bell. He did it with the Pandorica episode as well.

Who said great great great? Orson in the TARDIS said "One of my grandparents was a time traveller, but it's just a story - great grandparents actually". (Paraphrased but he definitely said "great grandparent" not ggg-gp.)

Also the doctor said this person was 100 years in Clara's future which places him at grandchild, especially as he had grey hair! - or was that dust?

I mean if Clara's mid 20s now then she's probably having children in 5-10 years, earlier probably for storyline purposes so let's say 3-5 although it might not be her first child who descends into Orson. So her child is born ~ 2020-2025, grandchildren 2045-2055, great grandchildren 2060-2085, so in 2114 her great grandchild is going to be around 29-44 years old, close to or slightly older than Danny/Clara's age now and about how old that actor looked - was it the same as the actor playing Danny with different hair? I'm really bad at telling that kind of thing (The Prestige totally confused me Grin) I can't check now but Orson's not on the credits on the BBC page. Anyway if it was a grandchild he would have been about 60-70 which is too old I think. Must have been dust in the hair, then.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 14/09/2014 10:05

Sorry, I think I slipped in an extra G there! I thought he said GG.

But thinking about it, I agree that 100 years isn't very far forward, and probably would be a grandchild/g-grandchild (unless they all have children at 16 or something).

BrianButterfield · 14/09/2014 11:20

The fact it's so obvious that Orson is Danny and Clara's descendent makes it not obvious for me! Moffat quite often shows you an obvious story and then totally twists it.

BertieBotts · 14/09/2014 11:25

Oh that's true - she was distracted into Danny's timeline but the doctor didn't know that. So he assumed that Orson was a descendent of Clara's but he could have just been a descendent of Danny's.

And he said "One of my great grandparents" not "My great grandmother".

firstchoice · 14/09/2014 11:50
