I'm with Humphrey - I loved the "I'm not your boyfriend/it wasn't your mistake" interaction

rallytog1 · 30/08/2014 20:55

I love PC but this awful scriptwriting is really not making the most of his potential. There were glimpses of pure magic last week that were just completely absent this week. I don't blame PC at all - this just isn't doing him justice.

Pixel · 30/08/2014 20:58

I agree, he did well with the dire material they gave him.

QueenStromba · 30/08/2014 22:22

I loved Matt Smith by the end of the first episode but I still don't like PC. It took me a couple of episodes to warm to DT though so I'm holding out hope that I'll end up loving him as I have the other doctors. The buttoned all the way up to the top shirt with no tie is really annoying me too - that never looks right to me. Either wear a tie or leave the top button undone.

Nerf · 30/08/2014 22:28

I love his coat though. If I was a man I would dress like that Blush
I have so many ideas for my 'look' as a bloke. Thank goodness I have sons to practise on!

Ohhh - bit quiet for a Who thread; are lots of regulars still on holiday?

Again, I liked PC's Doctor and the acting was OK - pretty good in places, esp from Zawe Ashton - but the plot was so predictable it was a bit disappointing. Even DH who claims not to like/pay attention to DW piped up "they've used that line before". Yes, they reuse plots and lines to explain the Doctor to new viewers, but it seemed very clunky.

Wonder if Russell T was happy to have a dalek named after him? Also, it's interesting they called the Dalek Rusty when the whole "you are the destroyer of worlds, you are the best dalek" line came from from one of his eps....

TroelsNextCampaignManager · 31/08/2014 00:03

Re Michelle Gomez. I love her but am worried her plotline will be too bonkers to make any bloody sense. So she'll do a great job but we'll all be left thinking wtf was Moffat ON?? come the end of the series and it will ruin the impact.

She seems to know where the Doctor is at any given point of time. She manages to take people/aliens when they are at the point of death. Does that work just for humanoid life forms (you could argue the droid was human enough to be transported like a human). Is she in the future taking people from a past she already knows or does she have current insight into the Doctor's life? Then we get into the whole causation thing with the ad in the paper Confused

Agree we don't have enough to go on in terms of her likely identity:

  • Is she the Master/Mistress?
  • Is she a corrupted element of Clara from her dive into the Doctor's timeline, still living in the heart of the TARDIS? Miss Clara/ Miss C/ Missy?
  • Is she the Rani or Romana? Not sure about this - surely they would be more active rather than sitting in a virtual garden having tea?
  • Could she be Death, angered that the Doctor skipped his appointment with her when he got his new regeneration cycle? This would explain how she's able to take those people/aliens at the point of death...
BertieBotts · 31/08/2014 00:05

Haha, I noticed that about the slime. Terrible continuity. And Clara has been in the TARDIS for a while - surely she'd know it would look odd if she changed her clothes.

I liked this episode! I thought it was a fun idea. Agree the good/bad morality thing was a bit over obvious though. And references to divinity. That must be linked to the "heaven" garden place. Plus they are dropping a lot of hints about soldiers. The daleks being soldiers, but when they malfunction they become "good" (implying soldier =/= good?), he refused to take the woman because she was a soldier, and the ex-soldier teacher boyfriend who cried because he had killed someone.

As an aside that garden is the same one that Amy got trapped in when she got old wasn't it?

TroelsNextCampaignManager · 31/08/2014 00:06

BTW Norm - nooooooo, Zawe needs to be the first female Doctor - none of this assistant malarky!

BertieBotts · 31/08/2014 00:09

Oh and I hated the slap. Totally unnecessary. Seriously, Moffat, it's not funny. Makes me not want to let DS watch the episode and I think he would enjoy this one (I probably will, but yuk. Hope they're not going to make it a running joke again because FFS)

TroelsNextCampaignManager · 31/08/2014 00:09

Also yy about the slime. At least in The Beast Below they came up with Liz 10 taking The Doctor and Amy to get clean...

TroelsNextCampaignManager · 31/08/2014 00:12

And agree with you about the slap, Bertie. Also like your thinking re Soldiers - the irony of the Doctor thinking he's a loving pacifist when he regularly needs to battle the monster of the week...

CalamityKate1 · 31/08/2014 00:18

I really miss Matt Smith :(

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 31/08/2014 00:21

Also , I know the science doesn't have to be accurate, but that wasn't nano-scale. More like milli-scale.

TroelsNextCampaignManager · 31/08/2014 00:28

Polka - you'll be lucky if there is any internal logic in this series as a whole, never mind scientific accuracy Grin

The other thing that occurred to me - and that I think is annoying me - is the repetition. Concepts that have been used before, lines that have been used before. Even in the details - like tears. Last ep we had the close up of Clara with a tear running down her face, haunted eyes. This ep we had Danny Pink doing the same. Is that a deliberate point in the plotting of the series or a cliche the same director repeated across 2 eps?

TroelsNextCampaignManager · 31/08/2014 00:30

And Pink and Blue as soldiers - girls and boys reversed. Is that another hint that missy may once have been a mister/master?

That said, if Yellow etc turn up then we'll just know that Moff has nicked the plotline of the Usual Suspects Wink

ABlandAndDeadlyCourtesy · 31/08/2014 00:40

Bertie - no, it's more circular with the central console water feature.

TroelsNextCampaignManager · 31/08/2014 00:45

Sorry meant Reservoir Dogs Blush

TroelsNextCampaignManager · 31/08/2014 00:47

Ohh - bland you may have something there. The Doctor's face is an echo of a previous encounter and so is Missy's domain - a cross of the Tardis console and the garden from The Girl Who Waited...

Pixel · 31/08/2014 01:14

I thought it all felt a bit desperate tonight. They've flogged the daleks to death and now they have run out of new angles to try and make them seem interesting. The whole Fantastic Voyage thing just didn't work for me given that there seemed to be a huge discrepency between this dalek and the jelly-creature-inside-armour casing that we have seen previously.

catsrus · 31/08/2014 02:16

Loved the episode tonight and think PC doing a great job Smile

LumpySpacedPrincess · 31/08/2014 09:17

I'm not sure about it so fat, loved episode 1 but not sold on last nights episode. I did love Mr. Pink though and I think Clara is a great companion.

It's just Daleks are so boring. When 9 faced that one dalek it was magic but they have just been done to death. I still cannot understand where they come from as they have been wiped out so many times.

I take it Missy is going to make a mysterious appearance every week until she is revealed.

What's happened to Gallifrey? Does he know the other timelords are "saved" or not. I get confused by Moffets plots, they are needlessly complex without enough of a good story line to warrant the complexity.

IsabellaofFrance · 31/08/2014 09:31

Anyone else think the crack in the dalek's innards looked exactly like the crack in Amy's wall?

I wasn't sure about last nights episode. I like the fact he is darker and meaner, but the whole premise of the episode felt a bit weak, like they just needed a dalek episode and wrote t in a hurry.

I think Missy is collecting people who have sacrificed themselves for the Doctor.

LumpySpacedPrincess · 31/08/2014 09:35

I thought the crack looked like the crack. Surely that whole story arch has been done though?

I think Missy may turn out to be a trickster type alien, feeding off the doctor. She is collecting people who have died because of his presence. Maybe they wouldn't have died if they hadn't met him and she draws strength from that.
