Anyone else watching?

BIL is an ex-marine and he's told me some of the stuff they got up to Wink

I'm loving this! But so far it seems quite simple...not impressed with the toughness, I expected tears!

Boudica1990 · 14/07/2014 21:45

Everything's always hoofing haha

my DP is not a RMC but another saught after beret and jumps out of perfectly working aircrafts for some reason Hmm

notyummy · 14/07/2014 21:46

They really can't serve as marines! Please do some research. They can serve in support but thatched very different to what these men are being trained to do. I am not saying I agree with it- just that currently it's a fact. In the same way they cant serve in the Paras or in certain other roles in the Army (or the RAF Regiment.)

TheFairyCaravan · 14/07/2014 21:50

I'm watching it.

Its not doing me much good, tbh, DS1 is in the second week of Phase 1 Army training.

DH is RAF. We had DS1 practicing ironing 'greens' for weeks before he went.

FrankelandFilly · 14/07/2014 21:51

nilbyname this is only the basic 28 days. Once they get into the proper 42 week course you will see tears!

What jazz said.

The programme has done nothing to change any preconceptions I already had.

notyummy · 14/07/2014 21:54

fairy- there are some similarities but in general your son has not signed up for anything close to the same level of beasting as these guys so please try not to let it worry you!

turdfairynomore · 14/07/2014 21:54

Am watching a few minutes behind. Am a bit annoyed that they feel the need to put subtitles up for a fairly standard NI accent!!!!

notyummy · 14/07/2014 21:54

nilbyname · 14/07/2014 21:55

Ok, looking forward to that!

How many make it through?

TheFairyCaravan · 14/07/2014 21:57

His cpl said he doesn't do shouting notyummy so I hope he's okay!

We met a woman on holiday whose DS went to the same training centre, they made him cry, so she phoned and complained! Shock I'd never do that!

Middleagedmotheroftwo · 14/07/2014 21:58

DH reckons about 8 or 10 will make it through.

I've just been told off for calling the experience degrading.

notyummy · 14/07/2014 21:58

Well they are all volunteers lovelychops. I think people are either in awe of what they can endure (which comes a bit later in training) or are mystified about they would want to. But there is usually more applicants than places but it's such an elite fighting force and there will always want to be people who want to prove themselves. And actually, most of the marines I have met are hugely capable and impressive individuals and most of them cite their training as part of that.

notyummy · 14/07/2014 22:00

Fairy- how mortifying for that recruit!! Trying to convince people he should be let loose with a machine gun....and then his mum phones up....

dementedma · 14/07/2014 22:01

When my RN officer brother was stressed or just too hot he would say he was "sweating like a marine in a maths exam." Good job he never actually had to defend himself against one of them!

STOPwiththehahaheheloling · 14/07/2014 22:02

Do they not get paid for their training?

lovelychops · 14/07/2014 22:03

I take your point notyummy, I think what you've said is very accurate about people either being mystified or in awe. I certainly couldn't do it!

TheFairyCaravan · 14/07/2014 22:04

STOP DS1 is getting very well paid for his training in the regular Army.

I know notyummy DH and I were flabbergasted! If I rang up DS1 wouldn't speak to me for months!

STOPwiththehahaheheloling · 14/07/2014 22:05

So who are the volunteers?

FrankelandFilly · 14/07/2014 22:05

Thing is, you can't expect RM recruits to be treated with kid gloves, they are pretty much our elite fighting force and if they can't take a bit of beasting in training how the hell are they going to cope fighting the enemy? As nice as it would be to live in a world without war, the fact is we don't and therefore we need to train people to fight, and be good at it.

OP posts:
TheFairyCaravan · 14/07/2014 22:06

I couldn't do it either lovelychops, even for the regular Army the training hours are long, they aren't allowed off camp, at all for 6-7 weeks, they get told when to go to bed, not allowed to drink on unit no matter how old they are. But I am bloody grateful that people do do it.

TheFairyCaravan · 14/07/2014 22:06

They volunteer to sign up STOP, no-one is forced to go.

STOPwiththehahaheheloling · 14/07/2014 22:08

Ah right. I misunderstood the volunteering comment.

FrankelandFilly · 14/07/2014 22:09
