Is anyone watching this? I'm a little bit Shock to be honest. I've realised that I know v little about the religion.

OP posts:

Audrina No suspicion, just knowledge of what happens. The ward leadership (bishopric, relief society, etc) meet together to discuss issues within the ward, and it includes updates about inactive members.

"If any member thinks they have to be a Peter Priesthood or Molly Mormon to be a 'good' Mormon, then they've really lost the point if Christ's Atonement" Mormons are taught that faith is nothing, without good works - this includes 'Every member a missionary', baptisms for the dead, temple work for the dead, etc.

Mormon woman are allowed only one husband - or rather, one eternal husband. They can marry other men, but can only be 'sealed' to one man (and a Mormon temple divorce for a woman is extremely hard to come by). A Mormon man however, can be sealed to every woman he marries, as long as they are both worthy to marry in a Mormon temple.

People are interested in the underwear, because it is an unusual thing. It's not every day that you find people wearing undies with masonic symbols on it. The underwear was brought in (in Joseph Smiths time) to show those members who followed the covenant of plural marriage.

The reporter was strictly controlled by the church PR people - if they thought it was inappropriate, it wouldn't have been allowed to have been shown. They were happy to show the missionary being set apart, after all.

merrymouse · 29/06/2014 17:12

Rules and regulations are a big part of many 'mainstream' religions.

I came across Mayim Bialik's blog which has quite a few posts about being an orthodox jew - her perspective was very interesting.

waterducksback · 29/06/2014 17:13

Allowed.

Not a good word.

waterducksback · 29/06/2014 17:17

We are 'allowed'.

Strictly controlled

worthy

Tapirback - your choice of words speaks volumes.
It sounds like a very restrictive religion.

Hairylegs47 · 29/06/2014 17:17

Not put out at all water!

waterducksback · 29/06/2014 17:19

Why can a Mormon woman only be sealed to one man?
but,
A Mormon man can be sealed to 'every woman he marries'?

Explanation please?

Tapirbackrider · 29/06/2014 17:21

Here, have a look at this link

institute.lds.org/bc/content/institute/materials/english/student-manuals/religion-234-235-eternal-marriage-student-manualeng.pdf

The link is for a Mormon teaching manual for temple marriage. It's worth noting the section entitled "Differences inherent between Men and Women"

It's also worth googling Kate Kelly Excommunication - thrown out for asking the male church leadership to consider equal rights for women in the church, and also the lovely quote below (said by the then prophet of the church)

"Some of our sisters indicate that they do not want to consider marriage until after they have completed their degrees or pursued a career. This
is not right. Certainly we want our single sisters to maximize their individual potential, to be well educated, and to do well at their present employment.
You have much to contribute to society, to your community, and to your neighborhood. But we earnestly pray that our single sisters will desire
honorable marriage in the temple to a worthy man and rear a righteous family, even though this may mean the sacrificing of degrees and careers.
Our priorities are right when we realize there is no higher calling than to be an honorable wife and mother”
Ezra Taft Benson (“To the Single Adult Sisters of the Church,”
Ensign, Nov. 1988, 96–97).

Tapir the UK is a pretty free society, the TV people are free to put any slant they wish on anything. A family I know had a program made about them - it was a few years ago - the editing was laughable. And very sad too.

I've never thought of the Church as restrictive, the 'rules' are for our protection. Guard rails or fences? I see guard rails.

If someone at Church asks or tells me to do something, if it is contrary to what I know to be true I smile sweetly and carry on as before. I used to get all shouty, but that would just give me a head ache. I'm entitled to 'revelation' for myself and I know I'll get it, even if some misguided 'leader' - male or female - thinks they need to curtail me, it doesn't mean God does too. He'll let me know directly.

Tapirbackrider · 29/06/2014 17:30

The explanation is plural marriage.

The Mormons don't only have the book of Mormon, but also a book called the Doctrine & Covenants - it's basically a record of the supposed revelations made to joseph smith (up to section 134) and then later leaders of the church.

Section 132 deals with plural marriage, and it is part of basic Mormon doctrine that a man can have many wives, it's just that now they have to wait until they get to heaven...

Hairylegs47 · 29/06/2014 17:34

I don't know the answer to that one water but I do know women who have obtained a Temple divorce, it's not that rare. I have a few female friends who have had Temple divorces.

For me, my 'highest' calling has been that of mother, and again I know ladies who have put it off following a career, only to find when they wanted to have a child, it's too late. They wished they'd taken the opportunity in their 20's or 30's. It's an awful sadness, what could've been

Tapirbackrider · 29/06/2014 17:34

Protection against what?

The documentary makers had to sign a contract agreeing to controls over what was shown, or they would have had permission to film refused. Everything that was shown was agreed to by the PR department.

"When the prophet has spoken, the thinking has been done". A famous quote taught to all Mormons who ask questions.

Hairylegs47 · 29/06/2014 17:43

Never heard that quote, but after googling it

“What a pity it would be, if we were led by one man to utter destruction! Are you afraid of this? I am more afraid that this people have so much confidence in their leaders that they will not inquire for themselves of God whether they are led by him. I am fearful they settle down in a state of blink self-security, trusting their eternal destiny in the hands of their leaders with a reckless confidence that in itself would thwart the purposes of God in their salvation, and weaken the influence they could give to their leaders, did they know for themselves, by the revelations of Jesus, that they are led in the right way. Let every man and woman know, themselves, whether their leaders are walking in the path the Lord dictates, or not. This has been my exhortation continually.”

Brigham Young

Tapirbackrider · 29/06/2014 17:43

Temple divorces are running at about 6%, but the civil divorce rate between Mormons is quite a bit higher.

HerbRobert · 29/06/2014 17:45

The Mormon church is sexist to the core. Perhaps some women don't mind always having to be "behind" the "great men". Not what I want for my daughters though. 1950 was a long time ago.

Tapirbackrider · 29/06/2014 17:48

Brigham Young was a peach of a leader!

The racism in the church stems from him - this is a man who allowed slaves to be given as tithing, and thought that Blood Atonement was a good thing.

His Journal of Discourses make extremely interesting reading, and are normally available via the ward library.

Tapirbackrider · 29/06/2014 17:50

And of course, women can't get to the highest level of heaven without a priesthood holder...

LarrytheCucumber · 29/06/2014 17:54

What is a 'worthy' person. How do you become 'worthy'?

HerbRobert · 29/06/2014 18:05

Members are constantly told that they are entitled to their own revelation. However if that "revelation" is contrary to what the Mormon church teaches they are told they were hearkening unto Satan. So there' s no real freedom of thought.
I myself was told I was in satan's grip, when I stopped attending church. Mormons are big on satan.

Tapirbackrider · 29/06/2014 18:07

A worthy Mormon is one who pays a full tithe, obeys all the rules, attends all the lessons, classes, attends the temple regularly, probably married with children, wears the undies....

Have a wee look at this link - its pretty comprehensive as to the things that Mormons are expected to do, follow, obey.

Hairylegs47 · 29/06/2014 18:11

Men can't get to the highest degree in Heaven without a wife either. I'm pretty sure men can't get to any degree of heaven without a wife, but a woman can.

waterducksback · 29/06/2014 18:15

'Avoid All Light Mindedness''

What does that mean?

Tapirbackrider · 29/06/2014 18:20

It's basically levity, loud laughter, that sort of thing.

Hairy Mormons get given their temple names, and a man is entitled to know what his wife's name is - she is not allowed to know his. He and only he can call her forward at the morning of the second resurrection - and can choose not to. He can have wives assigned to him in the eternities, a faithful woman gets assigned.

waterducksback · 29/06/2014 18:21

Blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth.

Am liking that one!

waterducksback · 29/06/2014 18:24

Do not engage in Same Gender Marriage.

And what is the current stance on that?

waterducksback · 29/06/2014 18:26

Shall Cleave unto your Wife and no one else!

Okay - that's a Good one.
If people stuck to that - there would be less broken families.
