I think Max seems to show vulnerability and sincerity and is drawn to or targets strong but vulnerable women. They think that when he opens up to them, they are being let into his soul and they believe he is sincere. He plays a game by seemingly not playing a game. Note that he's never reluctant to tell someone he likes them or say negative things about himself. Arch manipulator!

The Martin and Sonia thing really bugs me. We haven't seen her for years so we assume she lives miles away then suddenly it turns it she is close enough to pop over for a quick cuppa before work. And yet not close enough for martin to ever pop in, see his sick MIL, go to a family funeral... it's laughable whereas if they had jist reheaded him we would all be believing in him now. And on top of that Sonia is a nurse doing shifts uet still has plenty of time to do a cafe shift.

Aha! That explains it!! She's quite compelling, I think - has a strong 'presence' - but I couldn't for the life of me work out why they had her share her deepest fears with a murder suspect & dishonest witness as soon as he bought her a cuppa, then drop her knickers. If she's going to cosy up with Max, she can be the next unwitting victim of Walford's endless weirdness. Her serene character will rapidly disintegrate before our fascinated eyes Or, better, she'll turn out to be a complete fruitloop.
