Is it just me or is anyone else struggling to hear what they are saying? I feel like I'm listening through cotton wool ear plugs.

I'm still really enjoying this. Sound is better on the iplayer. (Or it might just be my iPad that sorts it out)
Is it me though or are they just totally giving away the end in the previews, I've read the book many many times and in it you are supposed to be as clueless as Mary is about who's controlling joss but the bbc are just telling you the answer. My dd hasn't read it and grumbled it was too obvious/gave the end away.

Agree Mama - i knew the twist but DH didn't and got it within two minutes of him being on screen. Picking a less sinister looking actor might have helped.

Wasn't the vicar in the book an albino? I think it's obvious he's the baddie no matter what actor they chose.

yy to Albino. He is blond, but not that blond.

I thought that Mary hired a coach back, I didn't think she got it back with the Davey's.

It is about 10 years since I read the book though.

The previews are annoying. Why bother with a cliff hanger then kill the suspense five seconds later.

I found last nights episode better but it's lost so much of the book. The careful build up, the essential nature of the characters. I've been muttering under my breath a lot and irritating DH but he started at the sound of waves from Jamaica Inn. And he turned the subtitles on, which helped, it has to be said.

I'm finding the extra characters really irritating.

OK, so how come so many of you manage to remember so much from the book? Have you got fantastic memories, or have you just read it?

Both, on my part! And read it again.

The albino part stands out for me, aren't many albinos in literature .

Christ, the murders are horrific.

On the one hand.....

The vicar was pretty damn speedy getting from the beach to killing the uncle and aunt and back to the vicarage (and wouldn't he have passed her on the way)...

But

He was pretty slow getting her up the small hill while Jem beat up the guard, got to the vicarage, grabbed his sister and rode back to the hilltop.

I had to put subtitles on.

Worth watching for Matthew McNulty as Jem Grin

I so would!

What an odd mish-mash - some parts of the dialogue taken directly from the book, and other parts of the story completely altered.

Bloody hell. Am in slight shock, that was utterly brutal.

Showing my age but I wish she'd chosen safety not adventure. Stubble and breeches only go so far and Ned wasn't exactly ugly

Oh no I'd have gone for adventure every time! Was that it then the whole thing in one hour? Did enjoy it and could hear tonight.

Oh god that wasn't a repeat just now then - the shame Blush

turned it on by accident to get the very end - suddenly a sister for the vicar? As for the "hostage negotiation" bit by Jem, I didn't realise it was a comedy.

I really enjoyed it, I was on the edge of my seat.

I was surprised at the wee creepy woman being the vicar's sister and her demise reminded me of that bloke from the mango yoghurt advert who runs then drops into a heap.

The drowning scenes were awful, really shocking.

I'm going to read the book.

I wish the BBC hadn't given away the ending in their preview. They seem to do that increasingly. You can't have a cliff hanger if you then show people what happens next. Wish they'd just have the end then credits.
It was OK but the ending was very rushed and they never explained how the vicar started smuggling and why everyone was so afraid of him and didn't just shoot him and claim it was an accident. He didn't have a gang backing him up, just a nutso sister. That bit was unbelievable. I haven't read the book though but if the uncle was OK about killing drowning men I wouldn't have thought 1 vicar would be much of a problem and the uncle had more friends than the vicar.

Yes, I think they should have spent more time making the vicar creepy - 4 episodes or even 5 would have done nicely.

I'm looking forward to reading the book to see if there is more character development and background information.

The shoot-out scene was ridiculous. And cliched. Why didn't they make more of what is meant to be the "worst kind of evil"? That is the most interesting part of the plot but it was rather underplayed.

The drowning scene was shockingly brutal and very effective.

And Matthew McNulty! Need I say more. Grin Very happy she ended up with Jem in the end. She would never have been happy on a farm (with ribbons on her bonnet!)
