Is it just me or is anyone else struggling to hear what they are saying? I feel like I'm listening through cotton wool ear plugs.

Ooh eck, that Jem's a bit of alright Grin

MollyBdenum · 22/04/2014 21:57

When Mary said "I don't understand you" to Joss, we started laughing as I think everyone feels that way.

AShowerOfBastards · 22/04/2014 22:05

So disappointed in the sound last night, but glad I clearly wasn't alone. Also disappointed in the lack of Cornish locations, except the beach which is our local and most favourite beach in the world (we're in Cornwall).

Totally forgot to watch tonight until 9.50 so will have to catch up on iplayer, but will have to start form the beginning again since I hadn't a clue what was going on yesterday.

Definitely need to read it though, it's been on my list for a long time.

Lilymaid · 22/04/2014 22:07

I too couldn't hear most of what was said - all whispers. I thought it was just me getting old and deaf.

LaVolcan · 22/04/2014 22:08

The story you read won't be the same - what Daphne du Maurier wrote is better. Why do they have to muck around with what an author has written? I know that long descriptions don't work on screen - but inventing extra characters, or altering the plot - why?

Cooroo · 22/04/2014 22:10

I liked it! It's prob 30+years since I read the book so no problems with expectations. I liked the grimness, the greasy hair (let's face it, everyone would be complaining if they all looked like a shampoo ad). Agree it should have been filmed in Cornwall, much as I love Yorkshire, and thought the bog scene very unbelievable.

Didn't catch every word but it didn't seem to matter too much.

girliefriend · 22/04/2014 22:11

Well enjoyed the second episode marginally more than the first. I had to turn it off last night as the whole thing was so dark (and I don't mean the storyline) I was contemplating changing the brightness settings on my telly. Plus couldn't understand a word they said.

At least tonights episode had a bit more light in it Grin and I could hear most of it although the accents were rubbish I haven't read the book but get the feeling it won't have a happy ending....

misssmapp · 22/04/2014 22:15

One of my favourite books.

I didn't enjoy last nights episode as it all moved too fast.
Tonight's was better though.
The vicar isn't as I pictured him and Joss is far too good looking!!

Jem's okay though!

figgypuddings · 22/04/2014 22:16

I never saw the first episode but quite enjoyed the second one. I have not read the book but I don't trust that starey vicar.
You could smell the characters.

3littlefrogs · 22/04/2014 22:18

I am struggling to hear quite a lot of it. Which is a pity because I am sure it is really good.
I am enjoying it, but wish the sound quality was better.

KurriKurri · 22/04/2014 22:33

Have given up tonight - was just as mumbly as last night.

Mutter mutter mutter 'smuggling' mutter mutter mutter 'brandy', all in pitch dark. No idea WTF is going on.

BeCool · 22/04/2014 22:34

Mumble mumble rasp. Another here who can't stand a blimmin thing.
Grin

And v grubby.

Giving up

Mandy2003 · 22/04/2014 22:39

Mmmm, Jem! I would Grin

Bunbaker · 22/04/2014 22:46

The BBC have definitely shot themselves in the foot with the sound on this. I found that having subtitles made a huge difference today and enjoyed it far more.

How on earth do people remember exactly what happened in the book? Have they only just finished reading it? I read it years ago and can barely remember the plot.

susiedaisy · 22/04/2014 22:52

I can hear it but I can't understand it if that makes sense. They all seemed to speak in riddles. I've no idea what's going on to be honest.

OwlCapone · 22/04/2014 22:54

I thought the sound was vastly better tonight. I had no trouble hearing it this time.

MollyBdenum · 22/04/2014 23:09

I knew the vicar was a bad'un.

moondog · 22/04/2014 23:36

I never knew you could do subtitles until this thread. I actually understood it once I put them on.
Is vicar bad 'un?

BOFster · 22/04/2014 23:51

Watch the very end again, moondog. Bad as bad can be...

libertytrainers · 23/04/2014 07:59

enjoying this, can understand it perfectly

kelda · 23/04/2014 10:33

I put the subtitles on right from the start, and have quite enjoyed it. An interesting heroine. I might have to read the book.

kelda · 23/04/2014 10:35

I'm fascinated by all the muddy/wet dresses, which appear to be self cleaning, and all the long flowing locks. Why don't they tuck up their skirts and tie their hair back?

OneEggIsAnOeuf · 23/04/2014 10:46

I'm enjoying it despite the the sound quality and diversions from the original story, but do think it is an opportunity missed to create something really true to the novel.

The main problem for me is the locations. I know they got funding to shoot in Yorkshire but it bears no relationship whatsoever to Bodmin Moor, which is so central to the story. They did actually have a small bit last night up near Kilmar and Hawk Tor and it just made the contrast with Yorkshire even more obvious. Also a shame they didn't use the church at Altarnun (which is beautiful) and use Launceston for um...Launceston - it is full of amazing old buildings and would have scrubbed up well with a bit of set dressing. I do like the recreation of the inn though and completely get why the real one may not have worked so well.

I'm a massive fan of Poldark, and they managed to shoot virtually everything in Cornwall for the original series, and i think that is pretty much the plan for the remake.

I thought that the wet and muddy dresses were meant to be symbolic, showing Mary getting deeper and deeper into the trouble and finding it harder to get out until she was stuck in the bog and lied to the magistrate. She got soaked through by the rain before innocently telling all the evil vicar. I suspect that she will end up drenched in seawater before the end.
