Is it just me or is anyone else struggling to hear what they are saying? I feel like I'm listening through cotton wool ear plugs.

Thank goodness that's over. Shameful.

I give up; Im getting my ear trumpet out. I last used it for ''True Detective''.

Oh thank god- I thought it was my hearing going Grin. I found the subtitles because I just couldn't understand what they were saying.

Oh (against the grain) I enjoyed it, but always watch with subtitles.... Smile I liked the brooding tension and apparently the inn is near Kirkby Lonsdale

See I could even cope with True Detective. Which was a bit mumbly but that was more mumbly accent. Whereas this was mumbly accent and dire sound quality.

Really disappointing. Barely recognisable from the book, characters or plot, apart from in the very broadest sense. From what I could hear.

I'm so glad it wasn't just me who couldn't hear or dear stand most of it!

OwlCapone · 21/04/2014 22:08

Understand. No idea what dear stand is :)

I was starting to enjoy it by the end: we were playing 'bingo' for the number of times that she stormed off in a strop (had to amuse ourselves somehow because we hadn't got a clue what was going on BECAUSE WE COULDN'T HEAR A DARNED THING).

Gave up here, too.

I turned the sound up twice and still cant hear it properly.

I have no idea of anything the uncle said !

Fed up of peering through the gloom, and being able to hear the music but little else. Looks like it's been instagrammed to within an inch of its life.

I put subtitles on around 3 minutes in and really enjoyed it from then on.

I liked it but haven't read the book for ages so can't remember what it should be like. I also couldn't hear it and even got pissed off with DH for breathing and turning the pages of his book as he was too loud (at a normal quiet level)

"and apparently the inn is near Kirkby Lonsdale"

The town is. The Inn scenes were filmed at Crow Edge, near Penistone. Other locations were in Tong, near Leeds, Farnely Tyas near Huddersfield and Keighley (according to the Barnsley Chronicle anyway)

I thought it was me!! Why didn't I think to put subtitles on?! Doh.

It never occurred to me to use subtitles either.

Subtitles here too - Was really looking forward to it but its quite dreary, not a patch on the book so far.

Will plod through tomorrows episode to see if it picks up.

I haven't read the book and was looking forward to it. I really loved it! Couldn't hear all the dialogue but all the brooding looks made up for it! Only scene I thought was poor was pulling her out of the bog. I'll keep watching but may put subtitles on to help out a bit.

Apparently D du M's son thought it was v true to the book and said his mum would've loved it ( according to dm who read it somewhere)..

I put the subtitles on too, although most scenes were clear enough. The slack rope and the bog yank scene were a tad pathetic.

Also, where was she storming off to all the time? In the next scene she was always back in the Inn.

The horrible uncle reminded me a lot of David Threlfall. The handsome brother is too handsome.

Shirley Henderson turned up as mad religious wife, again. Her life must feel a tad repetitive :)

But in all, I liked it and can't wait to see the next bit. I've never read the book though so I suppose I don't know how I should be.

I didn't really understand why she failed to tell the vicar or the magistrate about the you know what, her reasons for holding back looked a bit rubbish against her earlier zeal to do the right thing. I also thought the aunt looked downtrodden and came across as very submissive, so god knows how timid she must have been in the book?

I missed most of what was going on (read the book so long ago I only remembered it vaguely) because of the terrible sound. I came on here to try and catch up and what do I find? 70 other people who haven't a clue either!

corygal you missed something. BBC period dramas always have black friesian type horses. I'm sure the ones pulling the carriage were last seen carrying the musketeers Grin.

How absolutely hilarious that it could have got on air with such appalling sound. I also thought the guy looked like him out of Shameless. I remember loving the book but the Mary actress was so deadpan and everything about it was so muddy.

The only glimmer of hope is that they do it on Gogglebox Grin

Retropear · 22/04/2014 07:12

What is Gogglebox?
My mum used to call the TV the gogglebox.
