Is it just me or is anyone else struggling to hear what they are saying? I feel like I'm listening through cotton wool ear plugs.

I love Jamaica Inn, I've read the book countless times, got the Hitchcock version, watched an early 80's series with Mary Crosby as Mary Yellan, I've also been to the real Jamaica Inn, which was a dream come true for me,

I loved this, I heard it fine, and at last a drama set in the early 19th Century that shows real grime, and what Jamaica Inn must have looked like then.

Agree that they have changed some details, the book is set before 1821, and I'm sure Mary doesn't meet Jem Merlyn til later in the book.

Also not sure about Aunt Patience and Joss Merlyn,

In the book, Patience has grey tattered hair and wears a very faded pink gown, and Joss is a bear of a man, though their characters were well portrayed.

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 22/04/2014 16:04

I heard it fine too and am finding it ok so far
Ok it's not like the book but I've given up expecting adaptAtions to be. I try to enjoy them on their own merit instead otherwise I would have gone mad by now

GoldenGytha · 22/04/2014 16:15

I was expecting it to be faithful to the book, as Daphne du Maurier's son said in a recent interview that his mother would have been delighted by this adaptation as it was the one most true to the story.

I know who the real baddie is though! I won't say on here for anyone who doesn't know.

Retropear · 22/04/2014 16:18

The aunt's hair looks as if it was dyed, too brassy and she just didn't seem down trodden enough.

Mama1980 · 22/04/2014 16:18

Going against the tide here but me and dd loved it. I'm a huge fan of the book and thought the atmosphere was great and enjoyed the slow subtlety. (Except for the ridiculous bog rescue scene!)

AtYourCervix · 22/04/2014 16:19

Just heard that BBC had a big problem eith sound. Tonights should be normal and on iplayer itt should be ok too.

I might give it another bash.

GoldenGytha · 22/04/2014 16:20

Sorry it was Jane Seymour in the 1983 version, not Mary Crosby,

Where the hell did I get Mary Crosby from? Confused

GoldenGytha · 22/04/2014 16:23

Yes Retropear

In the book, Patience is an absolute broken shell of a woman, absolutely shattered by her husband's constant beatings Sad

Joanne Whalley was good, but not really Patience for me, and neither was Sean Harris Joss Merlyn.

He was good in The Borgias and absolutely chilling as Ian Brady, but not quite the brutal giant that is Joss Merlyn.

AbsentFromTheOssuary · 22/04/2014 16:29

I am finding it hard to decide which was worse.

The lead chap's Cornish accent in this or his Irish one in Larkrise?

Agree she only looked as if she was up to her ankles in the bog scene - i'm guessing there's a bit more of a rescue involved in the book.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 22/04/2014 16:51

15 mins in and I have switched off, couldn't hear a thing and what I did manage to hear the accents were laughable. Utter shite Hmm

moondog · 22/04/2014 16:52

Glad it wasn't just me.
I thought my comprehension issues were the result of a surfeit of wine and vowed to Lay Off tonight.
But no need! It will be incomprehensible whether I am drunk or sober!

LaVolcan · 22/04/2014 16:55

I don't remember her getting trapped in a bog in the book - although others did, but I won't say any more.

So far, I think I prefer the book.......

moondog · 22/04/2014 17:21

The pulling (and grimacing) with the loose rope was very funny.

GemmaTeller · 22/04/2014 17:52

The BBC have admitted problems with the sound levels, so hopefully tonights episode will be OK

SirChenjin · 22/04/2014 17:55

I wonder if it was certain regions that had sound problems - if that is even possible? Absolutely none here in Edinburgh Confused

squoosh · 22/04/2014 17:56

Well I watched in Glasgow and found the uncle very mumbly.

GoldenGytha · 22/04/2014 18:10

I watched it in Aberdeen and had no problems hearing what was being said.

MorrisZapp · 22/04/2014 18:57

I watched it in Jamaica and it was absolutely fine.

Only kidding, Edinburgh here and had the subtitles on after ten minutes.

SirChenjin · 22/04/2014 21:00

My one good ear must have developed super powers....I'll watch it tonight and type a running commentary for you all Grin

BOFster · 22/04/2014 21:23

I've got subtitles on again. It hasn't improved any, so it was probably a problem with the original sound recording if they haven't fixed it.

moondog · 22/04/2014 21:34

Guffaw at Morris.
I have only made out one word uncle has said so far
'Brandy'.

nowahousewife · 22/04/2014 21:35

No idea what Joss is saying but some of the others seem a little clearer tonight. Maybe I'm just getting used to it!

Bunbaker · 22/04/2014 21:37

I am watching it with subtitles. I wish I had thought of it yesterday. I would have given up without them. Joss is the worst for mumbling.

susiedaisy · 22/04/2014 21:42

I'm watching. It's ok. Haven't read the book. Sound is fine, is the problem a regional thing?

Endymion · 22/04/2014 21:50

Oh it's all wrong! Not like the book. Ho hum.

The whole relationship between Mary and jem - none of the lightness of the book. Her dressed as a bloke to go to the fair? Him living in a tent in the wood?

Pah!
