Anybody watching ? I watched it last year realy hit a nerve with me.

OP posts:
gertiegusset · 12/03/2014 22:19

Food tokens are degrading and humiliating, let people buy what they want without being judged by snotty shop assistants and other people in the queues.

expatinscotland · 12/03/2014 22:19

'Its not entertainment, fgs, its shining a light on hidden poverty!'

Bullshit! It's doing what all of these shows using the poor as entertainment do, demonise them for their 'poor choices' and for being spongers.

Why do we never see shows with rich people as entertainment, where a poor person gets to live their lives for a week and 'shine a light' on profligacy and waste? Shows on 'Tax Avoider Street'?

This kind of utter shite is divide and conquer propaganda for sheeple to fall for so they don't realise how the superrich are utterly fucking them over.

LavenderGreen14 · 12/03/2014 22:20

How would giving food tokens help when the cost of fuel needed is so extortionate. Seems to me lots of the people tonight were in poverty due to huge fuel debts. That chap paying £25 p/wk on an electric debt - if he is on benefits that weekly debt repayment should have been capped at a much lower amount shouldn't it - then he may have had more money available for food, rather than surviving on 1 can of chicken soup per day.

WipsGlitter · 12/03/2014 22:20

Well it's not working it is thattimeoftheyearagain. People are picking through it and saying bollocks they're in poverty - they can afford pets/sky/fags, etc. No real explanation of how they got into poverty. It's way too broad-brush.

And it's on the BBC at 9pm. It is entertainment. Why do you think they're using celebs? A proper insightful look at poverty would not do this. Someone from made in Chelsea? Come on.

usualsuspect33 · 12/03/2014 22:23

These programmes just fuel peoples hatred for the feckless poor.

Fucking pisses me right off.

expatinscotland · 12/03/2014 22:23

Let's do a show featuring the workers who are employed in Parliament's heavily subsidised restaurant and, oh, yes a bar. Tax-payer subsidised alcohol to the tune of millions.

I challenge the BBC to make a show about them and what goes on in the kitchens and bar, to 'shine a light' on hidden waste.

usualsuspect33 · 12/03/2014 22:24

Who was the woman? stupid twat she was with her £3 swede.

whineaholic · 12/03/2014 22:24

Because begging at a foodbank or crying in the jobcentre isn't a bit degrading, is it gertie?

VelvetSpoon · 12/03/2014 22:25

It's nothing to do with lack of empathy - that's a facile statement.

The people shown here can spend their money how they choose - but if I allowed my child to a) know I was going without food and b) feel guilty about it, I'd feel a failure as a parent.

As to needing treats etc, if they saved the money they spend on fags/other unnecessary items and put it towards their food bill, they wouldn't need to struggle so much and ergo might be less in need of little extras...

scarlettsmummy2 · 12/03/2014 22:25

I am horrified at the lack of empathy or understanding shown by some of the posters on this thread. No fucking clue.

usualsuspect33 · 12/03/2014 22:27

It's everything to do with your 'I'm alright Jack' attitude.

whineaholic · 12/03/2014 22:29

What do we need to understand scarlett? That benefits should
be increased so that people can smoke and buy Sky and keep pets?

Most people on average or below working incomes would struggle financially if they adopted the spending habits of some of these shown tonight.

No one begs at food banks you knobber, have you any idea of the hoops people have to jump through to be able to access food banks?

whineaholic · 12/03/2014 22:30

You have no idea if any of us here are alright at all usual. Some of us may be struggling horribly .

expatinscotland · 12/03/2014 22:30

The usual shite, scarlett. The BBC, as all these producers, carefully select the participants, so that sheeple can then extrapolate: 'they' all smoke, have Sky, dogs, gadgets. 'They' deserve punishment for their 'bad choices' and demonization.

I'm amazed at how incredibly thick so many people are.

usualsuspect33 · 12/03/2014 22:31

Yeah right, you live on 40p a week and eat organic and free range.

Yes gertie I saw the programme, the woman crying was begging for help was she not? Confused

Or did you think I meant begging on the streets?

expatinscotland · 12/03/2014 22:33

'Whine- you aren't the sharpest tool in the box. God love you....'

No one who falls for this type of tired propaganda is.

whineaholic · 12/03/2014 22:34

Not stupid enough to be taken in by sob stories though scarlett my love.

whineaholic · 12/03/2014 22:35

What are you trying to sayexpat? That those people weren't really smokers/sky watchers and dog keepers? That the BBC had planted these items upon them? Shock

BornOfFrustration · 12/03/2014 22:36

I wondered if there'd be a thread about this. Some of the responses are shocking. It's true, the kids will be getting a FSM Monday to Friday term time, but God, that doesn't make it ok that the families are living like this. I feel desperately sorry for all of them, whatever choices they've made or had to make. I just can't bring myself to say 'we'll they shouldn't smoke, drink, have a cat, watch tv' etc. I'll be donating to my local food bank. Not that it'll make a dent in the problem as a whole, but who knows what will.

Blondeshavemorefun · 12/03/2014 22:36

Very sad. Families need to be shown how to make cheap healthy meals. The one for £7 seemed expensive to me

A shepherds pie with mixed frozen veg is much cheaper then that - tho obv the quality of mince not be great :(

Pasta bread rice and potatoes are are filling an can be cheap

bonvivant · 12/03/2014 22:37

Several of the people on the programme said they felt like failures. If you felt like a failure and could see little in the way of hope in front of you i.e. life kept dealing you knock backs instead of a lucky break occasionally, then you might feel like a few fags or whatever to get through life. Fgs, my life is pretty good and there are times when I need a prop.
