So this Septimus Noone bloke was completely made up? What was the gravestone that Jonathan's wife saw all about then? Or was he a real person and the wife/her friend just used the name? Confused

Yes but they didn't show the makeup artist concealing the stomach until the big reveal towards the end. For most of the episode I was wondering why they hadn't mentioned it - because if it had been found it would have been obvious to everybody it wasn't a "locked-room mystery" after all. So the mystery which was solved at the end was the mystery of why everybody thought it was a locked-room mystery when we "knew" they wouldn't have thought that because there was a bloody rubber stomach on the bathroom floor!!!

However it is possible I have spent far too long thinking about this now!

Favourite past JC episodes - the one with the bath (frightened me to death, even though there were so many silly bits like why the Sheridan character didn't call the police when her mate went missing) and the skeletons in the garage, and one in a cottage involving a pair of scissors and some badger-watching (can't actually remember what happened but it was scary!!!).

Scariest was definitely the house were the girls who slept in a certain bedroom disappeared, due to having a bath that made them disappear. Very creepy and I think more scary because j. Creek is usually quite innocent.

The bath one frightened me to death when I watched. Still gives me the creeps, what an awful way to die! Yuck indeed. My favourite one is the Christmas special with Rik Mayall in it like someone else mentioned. That one is a cracker.

Yes, there was some humour in it nenny but it was no where near the normal standard. I found the Sherlock wannabe really cringey but the cheered-up corpse was funny.

Maybe 'arsehole' was a bit strong, but he never let her finish and was bored and distracted all the time. That worked ok when it was toward past assistants but this was his wife.

It just felt really stretched. The Septimus stuff was nonsense for so many reasons, we already knew the stomach mystery (and she could have sought medical help without reporting the grieving mother and there wasn't much motivation for the stylist to have been complicit and secretive) and the Holmes/sawjoy realisation was painful. And like a pp said, she was fine in the end so would have explained it all anyway...not that I wanted her to die, killing off the grieving mother with a hanging was unnecessary-it added nothing to the story.

My favourite was the one with the artist who went into his bunker and disappeared or the Ezra Kahn one or the one with the round tower that plunges like a cafetiere.

Love it (normally) but once we've watched the boxset, we have to wait about 2 years before we watch it again so that we forget the details.

Blondes, yes I know what happened to the prosthetic stomach, I too watched the programme. The point is that we didn't know about that till Jonathan Creek explained it to us, so it was one aspect of that part of the plotline that we didn't know in advance. I don't really see how the make-up artist could wear it himself, the blood on it might come through his clothes.

I think the point about the stabbing plot is that, if they had done it straight it would have been a fairly bog-standard locked room mystery and we'd all have been complaining it was tedious. This was basically giving us a different take on it and a different viewpoint, and I thought it was quite interesting watching it as it were from the other end, knowing how it was done before Jonathan did.

Watched it last night.

I couldn't work out why the actress didn't just go to the hospital and get the stab wound treated, saying it was an accident she did to herself. I know she had another performance to do, but at the very least she could have got some stitches and a proper dressing over it before applying the prosthetic.

I also disliked that the mystery wasn't set up for AGES into the show. DH and I were wondering when something was going to happen. The mother thing can't have been the main mystery - it wasn't even mentioned until over half way through.

At the end of the show, I was just left feeling "is that it?" First time I've been disappointed by Jonathan Creek and I think it was the lack of mystery. No guessing my own theory etc. No little clues along the way. No mystery with the actress one. Mystery with the ashes revealed about 5 minutes after it was set up. Mystery about the mother was presented really late into the show and then answer revealed about 10 minutes later.

Pants.

I think it would have been ok, good even, IMO if it wasn't a Jonathan Creek...i.e. it was completely different actors with no ties to the franchise.

Because if it wasn't for Alan Davies being there, it could have been any old drama. It didn't feel like a Creek. he seemed to have an altered personality, the successful formula was missing and the standard wasn't as high as it should have been.

Are they meant to be ironically ironic!! Eg for those who enjoyed the irony of the originals

I couldn't work out why the actress didn't just go to the hospital and get the stab wound treated, saying it was an accident she did to herself.

I suspect that a clued-up doctor could tell that was unlikely to be self-inflicted, and it would be difficult to make sure she got the story right.

Blondes No, worse Sad

It's turned into Midsommer Murders (posh village, cringey acting etc.), but instead of murders it had a sweet but totally random supressed childhood memory, a 'mystery' that relied on coincidences so infinitesimally tiny that it was just daft and a side story about snooping where the ends could never justify the creepy/criminal means. And a completely random burglary storyline that never resolved.

Coupe of cracking wank jokes, though! But none of the intelligence, detail or intrigue it used to have. I know it's never meant to have been believable, but it's just painful to see him being dragged into another 'unsolvable' mystery, while his wife rolls her eyes, especially as he doesn't even live/work in that world anymore. Bring back Maddie....and the windmill!

Hi all. I am trying to like it i really am, but I haven't a clue what the bobbins is going on in this series. Bring back the duffle coat I say. And Sheridan Smith maybe?

My favourite was the tipping up bath one.

JabberJabberJay · 07/03/2014 23:10

I loved the Sheridan Smith episodes.

This new series just hasn't been up to scratch. It doesn't feel like the old JC at all. The episode tonight was utter shite. No coherent plot to speak of, random coincidences all over the place and a couple of robbers who seemed to specialise in full daylight raids dressed in Scream outfits. Why?

Do the Creeks live in St Mary Mead? I kept expecting Miss Marple to pop up from behind the rhododendrons.

I was really disappointed in tonight's episode. And the phone number bit was daft too - phone numbers were a lot shorter in those days, normally 4 numbers not 6.

I don't like it since he moved from the windmill and got married.

Report
Sparklingbrook · 07/03/2014 23:40

Me neither Anne. JC would not get married to whatever his wife's name is. He would be with someone a bit quirky, or actually not married at all. That was part of his mystique wasn't it, that and the windmill? Getting married has made him more ordinary.
