Rebecca Adlington - medical grounds?

LalaDipsey · 25/11/2013 20:27

Does anyone have any idea why she keeps being excluded from the challenges due to 'medical grounds' ?

We wondered the same. Dh reckons that if she was bitten by something, the anti venom might be seen as an illegal drug in her system?
However, why did she sign up if that's the case?

DontNickMyMilk · 25/11/2013 20:30

I could be wrong, but I think she's asthmatic. I never watch the following day to find out what the trial is that she's been excluded from to work it out.

GideonKipper · 25/11/2013 20:33

I know it's her own personal business but DH and I both looked [hmmm] at eachother at an Olympic medal winning athlete being excused on medical grounds.

Also it begs the question whether people should be allowed to participate in the programme if they are not able to be fully involved. I remember when George Hamilton was in and he was excluded from practically every trial, so he was basically paid megabucks to sleep rough for a couple of weeks. Ridiculous.

GideonKipper · 25/11/2013 20:34

Hmm at each other, that is.

HectorVector · 25/11/2013 20:36

I don't watch it, but I'm pretty sure Rebecca Adlington is an asthmatic.

As an asthmatic stressful situations can set me off, and I imagine being in a glass tube whilst insects are dropped on your head could definitely be classed as a stressful situation.

girliefriend · 25/11/2013 20:37

I was wondering this as well!! You would think she would have been the fittest one there Confused

GideonKipper · 25/11/2013 20:42

Hector if that's the case then how could even be passed as medically fit to go in there?

I know you don't know obviously, just musing out loud.

I don't think this whole experience will be very positive for her. There was the incidence with getting upset the other day; she was picked last in a team thing, and the public will probably be grumbling like us about why she has been medically excluded so there'll be speculation in the press about that as well.

LalaDipsey · 25/11/2013 20:44

It is very bizarre! Asthma does seem like a logical answer but a) I think they should explain it and b) it doesn't seem quite fair to exclude her... If she can't compete should she be there at all or should they set up an alternative trial in case she wins?! At first I thought ok, excluded from 1 trial, fair enough, but it's loads now!

Very sad... I just typed Rebecca Adlington asthma into google, but the third suggestion which came up was 'Rebecca Adlington nose'. Poor girl Shock

I have read somewhere that she may be pregnant?! Hmm Tho if that was true, would she be allowed in the jungle at all??

AhoyMcCoy · 25/11/2013 20:49

Has she been excluded from every trial? I thought it was just the "confined spaces/glass ball thing over head" ones that's she's been excluded from, which would make sense if she's asthmatic and likely to panic in an enclosed space, maybe?

LucilleBluth · 25/11/2013 20:52

DH reckons it's more likely for insurance purposes, if she injured herself she would be screwed for training.

PoppyInTheFog · 25/11/2013 20:55

I understand you being intrigued. At the end of the day it is her business.

ScrambledSmegs · 25/11/2013 20:58

She has asthma. Apparently it's quite common in swimmers, the chlorine exacerbates the condition.

girliefriend · 25/11/2013 21:03

I wondered if she was pregnant Grin surely they wouldn't let her in if that was the case.

LoveandLife · 25/11/2013 21:21

I thought she'd retired from competition so the insurance/illegal drugs thing wouldn't be an issue?

Not sure I agree with the "it's her business" thing not when she's making money from it being our business. You can ask for privacy or you can do reality TV, not sure you can have both TBH. It's not unreasonable for people to be interested, especially when the situation seems "unfair"

loismustdieatyahoodotcom · 25/11/2013 22:32

I thought she may have been pregnant but then remembered she had a fire lighter tampon, so I guess it either asthma or she can't risk an injury??

EverythingIsTicketyBoo · 25/11/2013 22:39

Or was the tampon a red herring?? Throw everyone off the scent? I've also been wondering about the medical grounds.

eddiemairswife · 25/11/2013 23:13

According to my daughter the Sun says asthma and claustrophobia.

VonHerrBurton · 26/11/2013 00:28

LoveandLife is correct, she has retired from competitive swimming so wouldn't need to worry about training or jabs/weird venom in her system.

Must be something else.

beansbeansgoodfortheheart · 26/11/2013 00:39

I feel a bit sorry for her. I think she really wanted to go on Strictly but they wouldn't have her.

beansbeansgoodfortheheart · 26/11/2013 00:42

Claustrophobic apparently

elskovs · 26/11/2013 00:44

What a cop out. Dissappointing

Terrortree · 26/11/2013 01:01

It is disappointing. I really wanted her to be a heroic woman, but she's coming across as a bit princessy. Sad because under all other circumstances she very admirable.

GideonKipper · 26/11/2013 07:14

Why wouldn't she be wanted on Strictly? I thought they'd snap her up!

I also thought she'd retired from competion. What I don't understand is why she's trying to make her way inthe 'celebrity' world.when she's already expressed how upsetting she finds it to have her appearance scrutinised. That is part and parcel of being a celebrity.

I would have thought she'd be happier involved in coaching etc, or is money the main motivating factor?
