I had a theory on my walk today (saddo). Maybe the reason we didn't see the young soldier in the 3rd episode (unlike the other bereaved families) is because HE shot Steven - and that is why the retired copper heard the wrong sort of bullet shot.

Just an idea (but you can bow down & call me a genius if I am right).

ithaka, that's brilliant. I don't think the conspiracy copper was right -there's no way the police would let him get away - but he probably was right about the gun. Your young-soldier theory is excellent.

no the soldier was shot I am sure, as when the social worker turned up at the mums house to find her dead the police were there and cordoned off the house next door (which she just stepped through unchallenged Hmm) and there was a body lying in the doorway, sure this was where soldier boy and girlfriend lived. will have to watch it back to check.

Social worker stepping into crime scene seemed completely unlikely (but I'll forgive them because everything else is ok).

The soldier wasn't shot because the journo was talking to his SAS uncle in the pub about what the soldier would do now. The uncle said the soldier was with family for now but would go back overseas and that he'd be an excellent soldier because he had nothing to lose.

yes I just played it back and the body in the doorway was some random woman who has not been seen yet. i am very confused. wonder if the lsat episode on Sun 18th will show it all again sequentially so we know what actually happened and who was shot? what happened to everyone else etc.

so basically tommy felt guilty over his wife and was going to kill his self but didnt - reporter stopped him

stephen went ott/mental and went on a killing spree day after he was beaten up and pissed on by tommy and uncle

so maybe if tommy hadnt had attacked and humiliated stephen that his wife and others would be alive?

Hmm, I thought it dwindled away a bit today, reducing to: folks turn their back on other folk's unhappiness, which makes bad things happen.

The only poignancy that remained for me was the brilliant performance of Anna's dad, and the memory that Rory Kinnear, like the character he was playing, lost his dad in childhood -- which made all the sadness in his performance feel very raw for me. Dear old Roy Kinnear (Rory's dad), he was a lovely.
