I was ok with the first one, bit lost on the second and last night had no idea what is going on anymore. Bits just don't fit for me, the soldier who was in bed as his partner was shot, was he not seen dead hanging out of the front door later on when the social worker went by to go to see the mum and found her shot too? its quite implausible to me that all this went on but the town carried on around it, there is no sign of panic or police cordens, surely 15 people shot the place would be in uproar.

I watched only bits of last nights which has added to the inherent confusion so still don't know what the bloody hell is going on but I like the atmosphere and the tone of it iykwim.

It's very morbid and dark but compelling. Hopefully will understand it a bit better after next week's episode.

just watched the third part and am completely lost, the flashbacks and the men who all look the same have confused me. I will watch the last part to see if it makes sense then but I'm not hopeful.

Having grown up in the countryside on a very remote farm, I find the portrayal of the murderer's circumstances so true. There is a lot of unseen social isolation in rural area and the poverty and loneliness of his situation serve to tip someone who is already on the edge of insanity into full blown psychosis.
I didn't know anyone who took up a gun and went on the rampage, but I did know, as did everyone in my area of men (it was always men) who became surly hostile hermits living lives of poverty in what townsfolk would describe as a rural idyll.
(sorry about semi colon. My comma has decides not to work.)

The ex-policeman who met up with the reporter - was he saying that Steven (I think that is the name of the killer) is still alive and the police don't know where he is, but they don't want to admit it? I sort of missed that bit and only after started thinking about it.

Yes dexter - at least that was my understanding of it.

Wonder if the killings were connected?

If so, why Paul's wife & children?

Didn't get the wedding/funeral tbh.

Wouldn't really happen, would it-not in church?

Sorry, I mean I get why he did it, but it didn't work for me.

Paul owed Steven money (he was working as an odd-job man) & when he asked for it while doing another job at the pub Paul tried to say it was £75 not the £100 he'd been promised. Then Paul's wife spoke to Steven really dismissively.

I'm guessing these slights build into huge resentments Shock

Of course, thank you!

Yes-they were all dressed up for their baby's Christening, weren't they?

I keep wondering why we've not seen any of the aftermath of what happened to the soldier Chris - when he featured so prominently in the first episode and humiliated Steven the night before he went on rampage.

Where is Chris??? Is Steven really still alive??? Are they together????? Confused

Yes, he's not shooting people that have hurt him directly is he, but their partners/loved ones?

Somebody upthread asked about the music - it's the music they always used to play before the shipping forecast early in the morning - I think it's called Sailing By. In the last episode at least it is actually followed by the beginning of the shipping forecast.

The timeline of this is very confusing - someone is shot then, in the next scene, they're alive. Then, oh no, they're dead.

Other than that misguided (in my opinion) approach to the show, I'm really enjoying it. The latest episode is PVRed for tonight's viewing pleasure.

Sailing By - signals we're back on the morning of the killing doesn't it? At least that's how I read it, so you get that pre-warning. It's quite chilling, as it sort of stands for the idyllic

Didn't really get the relevance of the ex copper and conspiracy theory, whereas everything else seems to be tying in now by episode 3 - all the personal bits about those involved. Although if we don't follow up on soldier whose partner was killed in bed, that will feel odd

Ex copper did confirm the story about journo's father being framed, but then seemed to come off as a nutter, which weakened the father's story a bit.

Surely we don't have enough episodes left for his theory about the killer to be true?

Report
clangermum · 13/08/2013 14:05

Soldier's uncle (involved in beating Steven) spoke to journo in pub to say his soldier nephew would probably go back into combat didn't he? But can't remember what else he said. Just feels like we need to see the soldier, as that incident more than anything probably unhinged Steven, or at least it felt like the most significant in a long history of snubs and put-downs

I find Sailing By depressing and slightly eerie because I associate it with a two year period of insomnia I went through, that feeling of being totally alone every night. Haven't watched Southcliffe beyond Episode 1 as I found the SAS thing a bit ludicrous, but wondering if I should give it another go.

Report
clangermum · 13/08/2013 19:34

I found it odd that Chris went ahead with what Steven told him was SAS selection training after Steven said the others weren't going to be there as something had come up and obviously he couldn't say what.

What I thought after the last episode is - who's to say what the right way to respond to death is? I found the wedding/funeral thing freaky but could see why he might have done it.

And the couple not wanting to see their daughter, but actually the dad does, so either he changed his mind or didn't want to say so originally when his wife was so adamant about not going. And taking pictures. It seemed weird but then who's to say.

I think it's absolutely brilliant. I love the writing - not a cliche in sight. I love the cinematography. I love the way the story is unfolding in a non-linear way. I love the way it demands my full attention. Lots of complaints at the beginning of the thread about the pace, but I think the pacing is spot on. I love the way it refuses to move quickly. In the first episode when Stephen's frying eggs, we get to feel the monotony and repetition that's so much part of his life...

But I'll never be able to hear Sailing By on Radio 4 again without ducking for cover.

I now want to watch everything Rory Kinnear has ever done. Amazing cast. I hope Moaning Myrtle gets loads more telly work after this. I think she might do an Olivia Colman...

Me and dh watched the first episode, then he watched the next two on iplayer on his own.
He gave me a shock when he had watched all the episodes,he came down quite upset and wanted to hug me.
Reading what you have all written about wives and daughters I see now why he was upset.
