Really, I am dying to know what the "commotions" are in the "naice" village, Toddle, do please tell ... really ... Smile

Interesting also what Toddle said, none of the cameras were interested in those living a stone's throw away, getting on with things as positively as they could. There were a few normal teenagers they spoke to, just standing talking to the camera who seemed sensible. However, they were also the ones that commented that big families were normal and were the most well off from their benefits Hmm. So definitely with 8 children I believe the main family were exploiting this (which hacks me off) so I don't think its entirely propaganda.

Anyway, the boy Connor. Didn't people think he had some mental health issues, not just dyslexia? Perhaps his mother had issues too?

Booyhoo · 15/05/2013 12:52

Ohlori do you really think those teenagers had a clue whether the large families were mire well off for being large? They probably her that talk from their parents tbh and just parrot it out when asked. I dont think any of the teens at the park 50m from my front door even know how many children i have or whether u get benefits or not. I certainly havent told them so anything they claim to know is just guesswork.

threepiecesuite · 15/05/2013 14:34

I don't think Connor had mental health problems. I think he probably smokes too much weed which has had an affect on his mental state.

BigBlockSingsong · 15/05/2013 14:52

random question, skint isn't ondemand at all Hmm anyone know why?

Ilikethebreeze · 15/05/2013 14:56

Just watched it.
I think it had the wrong name put to it.
I think what surprised me most about it was that the people they featured on it just didnt care about things that others care about.

I was surprised how the houses featured in the background looked neat and tidy. I think it was probably just a "select few" that were asked to go onto the programme. Some of the rest of them may well have been doing their best.

Did think though that most of the people featured fitted all the stereotypes.

JazzAnnNonMouse · 15/05/2013 15:29

It's probably not on 4od because its being shown again on tv beforehand? I found the same with a few other programmes.

manicinsomniac · 15/05/2013 23:05

I just watched this on 4oD but now I'm wondering if I watched the same programme as all of you.

I thought it was an excellent programme. Shocking but sensitively made and portayed the characters in a sympathetic light.

To me it was the antithesis of benefit bashing fodder. It showed the dreary hopelessness and pointlessness of life on benefits - these people had nothing and were going nowhere; and they knew it. I found it deeply depressing but I saw nothing to judge. I'm just left so thankful that I didn't grow up in that kind of environment. It must be so tough not to give up and just perpetuate the cycle.

I liked Dean. He loved his kids, tried hard to bring them up properly (eg disciplinging Leah) and was a good and generous neighbour (replacing Jordan's windows for her - probably illegally but it was kind of him).

And did people miss the part at the beginning where it said that Conor was supposed to be attending a boarding school for children with behavioural difficulties? He has SN. If he were the middle class son of a mumsnetter people would be saying his behaviour is part of his disability and jumping all over anyone who tried to insult him or his mum's parenting. But because this child comes from a sink estate it's ok to say he's a little fucker?

Tracy made me cry Sad A cycle of cheap prostitution and theft to fund a drug addiction - not exactly the enviable side of benefits is it. I'd bet a huge amount of money that her life has never given her a chance.

Ilikethebreeze · 16/05/2013 07:37

Dean appeared to love his kids, I agree. In fact, after they had been to school or whatever to find out what the 12 year old girl had been up to, he knew, but unfortuneately the mum couldnt really remember what she had done, which for me, was one of the saddest parts of the programme.
If mum couldnt even remember the next day, how on earth was she going to help her DD to put things right?

True what you say about Conor.

Cant agree with you about portraying them in a sensitive light however.

Dont know about Tracy. They didnt say anything about her background at all. Very sad I agree.

Fascinating programme. Like watching an anthropology programme. I don't like this sort of fly on the wall stuff much. It's essentially fake but deceiving because it seems real. That said, it was intriguing. I felt sorry for all of the people on it. They were hopeless most of them. And I think they knew it and were just talking big. And of course they would be getting paid for taking part.

And the way the social was like a person to them. Some sort of arbitrary big brother type person. Hell to live there. Hell to live in those neighbourhoods. The houses weren't awful though. With more education and employment, you could see that those estates could be okay. It wasn't like the mega tower blocks you see in London.

Blondeshavemorefun · 26/05/2013 21:43

bigblock episode 1 skint

as others have said, this programme wasnt showing skint people in a fair light - as obviously it wouldnt be good tv Hmm

the average poor person wouldnt steal, non stop swear or prostitute theirselves

havnt seen 2 yet but aon planner

susiedaisy · 27/05/2013 21:36

Anyone watching tonight?

queenebay · 27/05/2013 21:41

Me! That woman couldn't remember who the fathers to her kids were!

Raaraathenoisybaby · 27/05/2013 22:25

The narrator does my head in argh!
I quite like Dean Grin

DrCoconut · 27/05/2013 22:29

They showed 2 streets that I have lived on, and the Christian place where the man was volunteering is on our present road. I know one of the people who run it.

Fedupofdiets · 28/05/2013 16:17

I was appalled at the way the children were spoken to by their parents. Did you see the little girl fall over? Her father said "get the fuck up" she can't have been older than 3. Poor poor children Sad I agree that this isn't a true reflection on being skint, this is showing British society at its worse. There are many many people who are hard up who have good morals and wouldn't dream of talking to a child like that.

susiedaisy · 28/05/2013 19:32

Completely agree, that father should be ashamed of himself!

OctopusPete8 · 30/05/2013 11:10

The level of swearing at children really got to me , it was horrendous no need for it, I liked Dean last week but his level of swearing is totally unneccessary and his wife seems to have had a child with everyone in Scunthorpe Hmm I'm still having to remove my judgy pants.

That homless lad was sucj as mess Sad where was his family? he obviously has some LD, why is he out there on his own all alone, just traigic, I'm glad that they showed the 2 in the same episode.

syl1985 · 31/05/2013 06:05

Living of benefits might be hard, but I don't think that you could call yourself poor.
You won't die of hunger in this country and you'll still get health care.

I think most people will try to do their best in such a situation.

After seeing this I just feel so sad for these kids. Living in these conditions. Having that kind of parents as an example. They swear, smoke, drink and shoplifting.

In Holland where I come from they're so quick, to quick with taking children away from their parents. But with these people I was thinking. They need a real good kick up their bum.

I don't know exactly what their problem is. But their attitude sure needs to change and they got to start to be parents for these kids.

It's not them being poor or living of benefits that is the problem. It's simply them, the way they're. Their attitude.

I hope the kids will be fine and get better lives then what they have now.

Tiredemma · 01/06/2013 18:02

I watched the latest episode last night on 4ondemand. I cried watching the homeless bloke.
When he described how his mother fell apart after thecdeath of his younger brother i sobbed. Clearly his childhood contributed to how he has become such a mess as an adult.

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/06/2013 08:34

Dean came across well in the first episodes but 3rd one he didn't

There is no need to swear that much in front of their kids - and talking about raming toys up their arses and the bit in the caravan when said can go and sniff their knickers was wrong

They say they are skint but manage to both smoke - drink and have a weeks holiday

All 3 things that some of my friends can't afford to do yet they work all week - not quite right

And that poor lad. Trying to better his self but got chucked out of his sheltered accommodation :(

And the lady with the pub. They all want somewhere to drink so why trash it and break windows etc

Last one tonight

BooCanary · 03/06/2013 21:25
