are there (almost) never polish builders shown?

Lovely couple, lovely builder, lovely location, but i didn't like the house. I thought they were sensible to build something they could afford though. It was a drama free build. (hope Kevin wasn't too dissapointed). I really didn't like the interior and the viewless bedroom was dissapointing too.

TheDeathAndGories · 31/10/2012 23:44

The inside will 'weather'
They're not the type to buy their interior

A few years time it will be full of bits and pieces they're found and loved and it will be homely. They've provided themselves with a canvas for now

Have you noticed how the cheapest houses seem to be the most loved, This, Ben laws etc

OlaRapaceFru · 01/11/2012 06:39

I thought they were a lovely couple, completely realistic about building a modest sized house to suit them. I agree that the interior seems a bit stark now, but agree with PPs who said it will soon get filled up with some of their own art - but somehow I don't think that Aran knitting and crochet rugs will feature very highly, MaryZ, although I could be wrong!

One thing DP pointed out, he was impressed with the space in the bedroom, but he said "where's the dressing room, where are all their clothes?". Obviously it wasn't shown, but they must have had some space for clothes storage etc?

CotedePablo · 01/11/2012 08:12

I must admit I'm a little disappointed. Yes, they were a lovely couple, and they kept within their budget, and I reckon they have got a well built house. However, for me, it just didn't look 'right'. Can't really put my finger on why though. I do hope this is one that Kevin goes back to in a few years and we can see, like a few posters have said, if it does cosy up over time with their finds, their art, etc.

Apart from that, yes a nice little warm glow when it finished.

Have just caught up on this and agree this episode had a good feeling about it. Thought it was lovely that they fulfilled a dream they'd been working towards - by saving hard (and going without by the sounds of it) - for many years, and that they built a house which was sufficient for their needs as opposed to something huge which a family of 10 would rattle about it, let alone a couple. There was no arrogance, for example, in regard to neighbours' feelings, no strops or tantrums because a builder/architect/surveyor or whoever needed to explain that something they wanted was literally impossible, no sense of entitlement and a real sense of excitement and appreciation as the build took shape - loved that the relatively "simple" achievement of a turf roof was one of their highlights.

I liked the house's style very much indeed though was a bit so-so about the interior - but hey, it's not my home. I hope they'll be very happy there and would also love to see it again after a few years .... would be interested for example to see how the surrounding land would be landscaped - or left to go back to nature. Do people garden much up there - excuse my ignorance - with the winds and ?

I wondered about the clothes too ..... maybe they were all in the 2nd bedroom, which wasn't shown.

AndIfATenTonTruck · 02/11/2012 12:30

Just watched this last night... very nice, and wasn't Kevin sweet. Must have been all that fresh air!

I think their clothes/bedroom 'stuff' wasprobably in a walk in cupboard behind their bedhead wall. There would definitely be a void back there if not. We also wondered the purpose of the funny 'leg' at the back of the house (the studio end). Perhaps a car port, so it is protected from the weather in winter? The only other thing I thought was odd was that they deliberately didn't connect the two buildings. With Skye's weather, you're setting yourself up for a lot if jacket-on-jacket-off if yo have to run between buildings when you want a cuppa...

this week's australian is great.
a 'hobbit house' earthshelter.

OhYoubadbadKitten · 07/11/2012 21:05

This weeks will be a challenge!

MousyMouse · 07/11/2012 21:09

just in time to see the floor plan. big-space conversions are usually not very satisfying in the end...

OP posts:
MousyMouse · 07/11/2012 21:11

I hope they have good insurance!

OP posts:
OhYoubadbadKitten · 07/11/2012 21:14

Absolutely. What an amazing neighbours they have!

OhYoubadbadKitten · 07/11/2012 21:23

Painful to watch.

MousyMouse · 07/11/2012 21:23

I would be a nervous wreck if they were my neighbours. imagine coming back from work to a hole in your house!

OP posts:
OhYoubadbadKitten · 07/11/2012 21:26

It would be horrendous! All that drilling and movement in your walls.

OhYoubadbadKitten · 07/11/2012 21:27

And the neighbour having to give over part of his little garden temporarily. They are all saints!

HazeltheMcWitch · 07/11/2012 21:31

'when you can't grow anything anyway'
That is the point that she turned into an ungrateful mare.

OhYoubadbadKitten · 07/11/2012 21:31

Ahh, the neighbours aren't saints, they don't sound silly at all! (Where is everyone on the thread? )

OhYoubadbadKitten · 07/11/2012 21:32

Exactly hazel, a bit of true character there!

OhYoubadbadKitten · 07/11/2012 21:36

No!!!!!!!!!! Poor lady!

HazeltheMcWitch · 07/11/2012 21:36

Chloe = patience of a saint.
With a very lovely kitchen.

Levantine · 07/11/2012 21:37

Oooh I thought that Hazel.

Levantine · 07/11/2012 21:37

I love Chloe's house. She's painted the bookcases since they started work. V nice

CotedePablo · 07/11/2012 21:38

Sorry sorry! Am here! Couldn't find the thread!

Not terribly sure about this one. He's ok, not so keen on here. And it looks like it'll be boxes stacked on top of each other for the bedrooms.

CotedePablo · 07/11/2012 21:38

Chloe's the young girl next door? And she's pregnant now... Aww..

HazeltheMcWitch · 07/11/2012 21:39

They were white before, weren't they?
Poor Chloe, she's had plenty of time to paint bookcases AND grow a new person, and it's still just a frame out there...
