I have been waiting for this for a very long time! :-)

Apparently Cumberbatch, who is friends with both David Tennant and Matt Smith, did discuss the idea of taking in the role with DT, but decided he didn't want the adulation (appearing on school lunch boxes, etc) so never even auditioned. By the time they came to auditioning the Doctor, he had already been cast as Sherlock, so would not have been able to do both.

As an aside, I'm a big fan of Matt Smith. He was definitely a grower, unlike DT who I thought was instantly likeable.

i've seen eps 2 and 3 as well.

When are the broadcast dates for the other episodes? I read that we only get 5 episodes this side of Christmas, so does that mean we'll have to wait from October till Christmas for the next, or are they staggering the other 4 episodes between now and Christmas?

Confused

i've seen eps 2 and 3 as well.

erm how Confused are they good

yes they will have a mid series break and show the christmas episodes , and MS is a grower I think he is quite sweet like an overgrown kid with a touch of the genuis

Tee2072 · 02/09/2012 13:11

Well, Ep 2 is deffo next week, as they said so at the end last night. It's on at 735.

I think they are showing them weekly and then a break, then Xmas Special, then the rest.

Mrsjay · 02/09/2012 13:14

didnt they do that last year too ?

Cloudbase · 02/09/2012 13:17

I really loved DT but felt very let down at the end by all the weeping over his companions and all the "I don't want to diiiiie" malarkey with Ood Sigma (he was going to regenerate!)

Most unseemly for a Time Lord. You'd never catch Tom Baker weeping into his coffee Grin

FrankelSaysRelax · 02/09/2012 13:22

Yes, but the split was over the Summer.

According to IMDB broadcast dates remaining are 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th September then 25th December.

I'm assuming we lose Amy and Rory in the episode on 29th Sept, titled "The Angels Take Manhattan".

OodHousekeeping · 02/09/2012 13:30

Was looking out for you torturing us aitch Grin

Mrsjay · 02/09/2012 13:53

DO you work for the beeb aitch oh go on tell us dont run in say what you did and run away sniggering tell us Grin

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 02/09/2012 14:15

och no, i won't. but they're both good episodes, imo. dinos in space is v kid-friendly and basic (iykwim?) and i'll be watchign to see how quickly you recognise the robot voices. town called mercy is actually a really knotty philosophical problem that prompted a great convo with dd about war etc.

DanyTargaryen · 02/09/2012 14:19

Jenna Louise's character in christmas special is apparently called clara.

Cloudbase · 02/09/2012 14:46

Mrs Jay
I will concede that the end of Waters of Mars was very good - I loved the realisation that he had that he was starting to play God and make decisions he had no business making. That was excellent and moving.

It was just all the staggering around and swooping by all the old companions in an overly emotional fashion that featured in the very last episode.

I guess DT was such a popular Doctor that maybe RTD felt he needed to make a big deal of his exit and say a proper 'farewell'.

I just remember all the old 80's regenerations when the Doctor would fall over, the companion would say "Doctor?" in a faintly quizzical fashion, the lights would go all blurry for a few seconds and, Bob's your Uncle, a new Doctor would be lying there and they'd all go and have a cup of tea in the Tardis.

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 02/09/2012 14:51

all very english. Grin once you let the welsh and the jockos in on the writing, though... it goes to hell in a sentimental hand cart.

snapespeare · 02/09/2012 15:00

Matt smith as John Watson would have been sublime, but they're both a bit odd-looking, him and cumberbatch, it would have been a bit strange to watch. :-).

Ds2 is home now and we're planning a rematch as he didn't see it last night. (disowns child)

I loved the 70/80s reginerations all fuzzy and and that was that I agree with you there cloudbase

us jocks are a sentimental bunch Grin

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 02/09/2012 15:05

see the thing about the old regenerations is that if the doctor doesn't feel it as any more than the change of a jacket, why battle so hard to stay alive? (having dispatched with the limited regeneration line by this point). i thought that tennant explaining what it felt like to go was stunning, tbh.

Mrsjay · 02/09/2012 15:08

and me I loved it christopher ecclestone resigned himself to it DT not so much .

MammyToMany · 02/09/2012 15:17

I cried when Amy was telling Rory she had let him go because she couldn't have children - then had a mini rant to ds1 who had no idea what I was going on about, about how the doctor takes these people on adventures with no thought to how it would affect their lives when they had to carry on without him. Sarah Jane never gave up waiting for him and missed out on a husband and a family (until Luke), Rose couldn't give him up and has to have a duplicate doctor to be able to carry her life on, Donna lost her whole life, forgetting all that she had done and seen and becomes her old selfish dumb self and Martha ends up heart broken etc and all the people that have died in his name - ds just wanted to watch the programme Blush

I liked the episode though, I really like Matt Smith. I agree he is definately a grower.

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 02/09/2012 15:20

martha ends up married to mickey, though, she's easily the most functional out of the lot of them. because she never dared to believe that the doc loved her back, i think.

i really think donna got ripped off badly. i wanted that last phone call from her friend to mention the name of that guy who she'd been married to in the alternate world of the library. that would have been an indication that happiness was due to her.
