I have been waiting for this for a very long time! :-)

OP posts:
Jux · 16/09/2012 13:10

I thought the line was "decimated half the planet". Doesn't that mean that in half the planet one in ten people were killed? I don't see a problem with that.

MrsToddsShortcut · 16/09/2012 13:11

But doesn't the exposure to the time vortex change your biology anyway? In Torchwood, Martha's blood test results the Pharm came back with altered blood cells due to exposure to space/time radiation.

Presumably that would affect the ageing process? (frantically grabbing at straws here).

I loved last night's episode though. But I love Westerns and I love WestWorld, so creepy Gunslingers are fab in my book.

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 16/09/2012 13:15

oh yes, technically it's not incorrect however in my line of work (writing, but not scripts) we'd get that slung back at us as clunky and likely to stop people in their tracks.

SoupDragon · 16/09/2012 13:16

One of the definitions of decimate is kill, destroy, or remove a large percentage or part of.

Tee2072 · 16/09/2012 13:56

But the 'two lives' thing is in next weeks preview. Not this week's episode. So if you don't watch the previews, it makes even less sense.

ExitPursuedByABear · 16/09/2012 14:06

I thought decimate was to remove a tenth of something.....

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 16/09/2012 14:38

but it doesn't really matter that it can mean x or y, only that it would unnecessarily cause a huge CLAAAAANG in the script that might cause viewers to disengage with it. like i say, my ed chucks that stuff out and gives us a ticking off. being technically right with a lot of readers scratching their heads rather than enjoying the paper is not a good result for a writer.

MavisGrind · 16/09/2012 14:51

Late to the party as I am, I usually love Dr Who with a passion demanding silence in the library lounge whenever it is on.

Last night I started MNing half way through....

I know we're building up to something big, however this episode just seemed to be filler with a few clues thrown in to make up time. IME

SoupDragon · 16/09/2012 15:36

But no one uses decimate to mean only destroying 1/10 Confused

SoupDragon · 16/09/2012 15:37

Anyway, did anyone read the wanted posters and were the interesting/amusing?

edam · 16/09/2012 15:40

Decimate was used correctly when Russell T was in charge - the season finale with the Master and Martha's family being kept as his servants. I was very impressed, it's not often you find a grammar pedant on prime-time TV. Grin

I loved the line about anachronistic electricity, glaring strangers and whatever '... has someone been peeking at my Christmas list?'

ChoccyJules · 16/09/2012 15:53

Patting self on back a teeny bit as also noticed the Stetson and Doctor's Age bits.

Tee2072 · 16/09/2012 17:17

My husband just pointed out that lightbulbs have been exploding in each episode...

OodHousekeeping · 16/09/2012 17:37

Hmm [thinking face]

confuddledDOTcom · 16/09/2012 17:39

That's the second episode in a row he refers to his Christmas list. Did get a Hmm here.

DinosaursOnASpaceship · 16/09/2012 17:46

I've posted on this thread before but name changed (was MTM)

I've only seen this weeks in bits and pieces as screaming teething baby wasn't in the mood for doctor who last night nor as it serums today Hmm

Will have to have a proper watch to pick up on clues but the doctor really doesn't seem like himself. Pointing guns! In the End Of Time (when 10 dies) he wouldn't even consider holding donnas grandads gun (what was his name again?) until he realised the time lords were returning and only used it as a final measure. The doctor at the moment seems so angry and distructive.

I wonder whose coffin they are standing over in the preview on YouTube? And the relevance of ageing, and in asylum of the daleks Amy being unable to have children was mentioned, and her being a mother was mentioned again last night - I am hoping for a soppy leaving for them where they somehow go off to have a baby. Maybe its Rory's father in the coffin.

LetUsPrey · 16/09/2012 17:48

Dinosaurs on a Spaceship was a birthday list which started with a conversation between Rory and his dad. Still very similar though.

I remember it because I too still make a birthday list of sorts Blush although I'm not as old as the Doctor

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 16/09/2012 19:18

decimate is widely used to mean 'damage really badly', yes, however in conjunction with 'half' it was a clunker and should have been chucked. unless it means something that we will find out about later, of course...

Geekster · 16/09/2012 20:14

Wilf

confuddledDOTcom · 16/09/2012 21:29

"Put it on your Christmas list!"
"Dad, I'm 31, I don't have a Christmas list any more"
"I DO!"

Just checked on iplayer Grin

LetUsPrey · 16/09/2012 21:59

Sorry Grin. Just had a birthday and not got my Christmas head on yet!

OodHousekeeping · 16/09/2012 22:03

Wonder if it's to do with ' there's no point in them having a Xmas list as they'll be dead by then?'

edam · 16/09/2012 22:56

decimate may be frequently mis-used but so what - Doctor Who should know better. Will they be chucking in a 'very unique' next week?

So, Christmas list, lightbulbs, stetson...

confuddledDOTcom · 16/09/2012 23:00

That's ok LetUsPrey Grin I only checked because I thought I was going mad lol I'm getting annoyed at how quickly Christmas seems to be creeping into the shops - especially as I'm pregnant and going to have it close after Christmas and only found out about 6 weeks ago, it's making my brain hurt!!!

OodHousekeeping, I don't think it is because Amy said yesterday that there's been quite a few months (she did specify but I can't remember how long) since their trip with him, so it's possible there's been a Christmas in between.

Davros · 17/09/2012 09:15

But they were so careful to use decimate correctly when the Master took out 10% of the population and Martha had to "run"
