I take it we are all sitting comfortably, and have the strawberries, cream and champagne at the ready ?

Here's to a fantastic 2 weeks of tennis !

VAMOS RAFA Grin

Just turned the tv on to more excitement. Rosol's win last night has obviously made the lower ranked players think, "Well, if he can do it..."

And maybe the top few will have had their confidence shaken a bit. Grin I'd love to see Djikdok go out.

MrsVamos · 29/06/2012 14:30

I agree AnyOtter Smile

I think last night will have shaken a couple of players, and given a boost to some of the 'unknowns', as you said, if Rosol can go great guns and beat Rafa, then why shouldn't others ?

There must be something in the water, DickDjok is a set down. Shock

Would love to see Heather progress later.

It wil be interesting to see Rosol's next match. I think it's one of those things, that, like when Rafa came along and beat Roger, and then when Roger went out in the 3rd round (I think) it is almost unthinkable, and there is a nasty edge to people's thinking...."how the heck did he get beat" etc....No-one can be brilliant all the time, and they are all only human !

Wimby is not the same without Rafa, though. Sad

PetiteRaleuse · 29/06/2012 14:32

Watched the final set of the Nadal match this morning - since when is it acceptable for players to spit? Shock

RaahhfaNadalsmyToyboy · 29/06/2012 14:37

I was listening to radio 5 live on my way home before- the commentators were annoying. To listen to them, Nadal is a has-been, and Rosol is the next big thing. I don't think either is true. Rosol played the match of his life, but he is 26, has never even qualified before- i wouldn't bet against his next match being a total white wash.

It was telling that they had Pat Cash talking about it- in 87, Boris Becker, came to wimbledon, twice champion, queens champ, shoo-in for the title. Beaten in the second round by Peter Doohan. Which opened doors for Cash to go on to win. (But Doohan didn't exactly go on to become a top 10 player)Upsets happen.

RaahhfaNadalsmyToyboy · 29/06/2012 14:40

Exactly- the spitting was vile.

AnyOtterForTennis · 29/06/2012 14:40

It's going to be Roddick's year.

Grin
RaahhfaNadalsmyToyboy · 29/06/2012 14:43

Anyotter- that would be great.

AnyOtterForTennis · 29/06/2012 14:50

Wonder whether I could just leave my DCs at school? No? Damn.

MrsVamos · 29/06/2012 14:55

I think the spitting is what produced some of the drug rumours. Apparently, certain drugs produce lots of saliva....not that I would know, I'm just going on what others have said. I think it would be wise for someone to have a little word with him, that it's not quite the 'done thing' at Wimby....Stepanek wasn't allowed to wear a certain pair of trainers today and had to change them to a more white pair, yet Rosol gobbed everywhere. Disgusting to see.

Far too often the commentators are quick to knock someone...it gets on my wick too, Raahhfa, it's almost as if they cannot accept that someone got beat without it being the signal to the end of their career. They said Roger was finished when he went out early, but he's still playing, and playing well.

Maybe the transistion from clay to grass was too much this year, or is becoming too much ? None of the players play like they did 5 years ago, their bodies all get older, and it must get harder to make the transistion. Maybe Rafa's style of play will make it harder for him, the older he gets ?

I love the way we are all defending him and making 'excuses', which is not what he does, he is sporting enough to say, "fair's fair, I got beat". Grin

I still want to know what was said between Rafa and the umpire for Rafa to say what he did post-match. What wasn't right ? Was it just as simple he couldn't believe the way Rafa was beaten ? Or was he trying to imply foul play ?

OP posts:
GoOnTim · 29/06/2012 15:05

I blame myself.

the first year I dont hate poofingers Rafa and he gets stuffed.

Oops, sorry about that :o

The drugs rumours are nasty and spiteful. He got beat fair and square and I'm really disappointed in him being such a bad loser. The barging on court? Shame on him.

I alsways knew he was a poofingered wally.

G'wan Roddick! Or Tsonga! Or Federerererererer!

MrsVamos · 29/06/2012 15:16

I am genuinely confused as to why people are saying he is a bad loser. The interview I saw last night, the first thing he said was "I never make excuses for losing" and he didn't ? I think it was a bit naughty to make reference to what the umpire may or may not have said, but as before, I would be interested to know what was said.

The barging was most out of character. I've never seen him do that before. Should he have gobbed on the balls before serving, maybe ?

The drug rumours are nasty, but not started by Rafa. It's the good ol' British public come up with that.

Looks like normal service has resumed on CC. 1 set all and Novak up 3 - 0.

Haven't seen any other matches, what's happening elsewhere ? Anyone ?

OP posts:
NoComet · 29/06/2012 15:30

I think Rafa managed his interview pretty well. He's human and he was clearly fed up, but he wasn't going to make excuses.

Business as usual from Djok on centre, I seeSad

uselesslife · 29/06/2012 15:32

MrsV
He sulked around the court like a moody teenager, like a spoilt brat
Centre court crowd really saw it and started to boo him towards the end
It's not what he said after the match, but his behaviour on court

MrsVamos · 29/06/2012 15:35

Sorry, uselesslife, I watched the match and didn't see that.

CC are fickle, they were cheering for Rafa, then switched support when he won the first set, then got panicky and cheered for Rafa again towards the end. What is this obsession we seem to have in that we like to see great players lose ?

I guess we will have to agree to disagree.

OP posts:
MrsVamos · 29/06/2012 15:38

Yep, Star looks like Novak is sorted.

At least it has given us something to talk about ! Will there be another huge upset ? Who is going to win this year ? I wouldn't like to call either the men's or women's at the moment !

I'm still stunned, I think because no-one saw it coming. Usually you can pick out where there may be a surprise. No bad thing if it makes everyone else play better !

OP posts:
uselesslife · 29/06/2012 15:52

MrsV, lots of people on this thread commented on Rafa's behaviour, it's not just me! And someone mentioned the crowd turning too.

CC are a bit fickle, but mainly they just want to see some good tennis.

I love Rafa, I really do, my money was on him after watching him at Roland Garros, I thought he was invincible, but definitely saw a different side to him last night

MrsVamos · 29/06/2012 15:59

Hmmm, see it's interesting you saying that. Maybe you have to be there to get a proper sense of how the crowd feel, and why ? Maybe actually being there, you get to see things and little facial expressions etc, that the tv cameras don't pick up ?

It must have riled him, I suppose. All that jumping about, spitting, and getting outplayed. Maybe he's got to learn to contain it a bit more ? The BBC commentators talked about him wearing his heart on his sleeve....I always think Roger is good at concealing how he feels. Maybe for whatever reason last night, Rafa just couldn't rise above it ?

Lots of people post about his behaviour and say he is like it all the time, and he isn't !

Sharapova's just won.

OP posts:
RaahhfaNadalsmyToyboy · 29/06/2012 16:03

MrsV- I totally agree about the obsession with enjoying seeing good players lose, and writing them off.

Business as usual for Djoko then. Who, as we know, has the on-court demeanor of a saintGrin

CremeEggThief · 29/06/2012 16:03

Rafa was definitely out of sorts in that match and his behaviour was not at the standard it usually is, but several other players have often been worse.

God, Sharapova is getting louder with every match!

RaahhfaNadalsmyToyboy · 29/06/2012 16:05

Watson next- and Radwanska, who will probably sound even louder with the roof on!

MrsVamos · 29/06/2012 16:09

Oh, yeah, Raahhfa....Novak is such a gent. Hmm Grin

Oooh, GOOOOOO HEATHER !

Will I need my earmuffs ? Grin

OP posts:
MrsVamos · 29/06/2012 16:13

Any useful insights, oh wise one ? Smile

OP posts:
RaahhfaNadalsmyToyboy · 29/06/2012 16:16

We may need ear muffs. Will be making use of my mute button. I do hope Heather does well .

RaahhfaNadalsmyToyboy · 29/06/2012 16:29

Clijsters has started well. Go Kim!

CremeEggThief · 29/06/2012 16:33

MrsVamos, I did wonder if Rafa over-did the celebrating a bit the night before, when Spain beat Portugal! :o
Historically, he has struggled a few times in the 2nd and 3rd rounds at Wimbledon, which is why I was sure he'd find a way to win eventually. But there was nothing he could do while Rosol was serving like that.

Come on Heather! A great start for her, even if she couldn't quite manage the break.
