I thought it might be an idea to start a new thread for The Reichenbach Fall since The Hounds got its thread up to over 200 pages since last Sunday!

Non-spoilery vague preview description: "Sherlock and John lock horns with their old enemy in one final problem that tests loyalty and courage to their very limits. Sherlock must fight for his reputation, his sanity and his life. But is he all he claims to be?"

BBC link for The Reichenbach Fall

Take note of the later start time of 9pm. Get your deerstalkers and spiffy pocket magnifiers ready!

Andrew Scott was amazing. I heard someone describe him as the love child of Graham Norton and Gok Wan, but I think he was brilliant. He was totally and utterly unhinged and you couldn't tell which way he was going to go.

givemushypeasachance · 15/01/2012 23:13

Greenknowe - since he wasn't wearing a "Sherlock Hat" none of the general public should recognise him, and John and Mrs Hudson were probably a bit teary-eyed so wouldn't spot him about fifty feet away looking mysterious at the edge of a graveyard... maybe.

Exactly, CaveMum, so Sherlock solved that case and couldn't have set it up as Moriarty. I think all the others were Moriarty though, weren't they?

My favourite's still the first one with Phil Davies, the taxi driver. So haunting!

Punkatheart · 15/01/2012 23:17

Molly was probably the cyclist - as she is the only one who knows about Sherlock's need to disappear.

It was quite amazing - so many clever touches. Still not keen on Moriarty though.....

easylife73 · 15/01/2012 23:24

There must have been a Sherlock mask used in the kidnapping of the kids - Sherlock would have worked that out fairly easily, so would also have worked out where Moriarty had stashed it. He could then have put it on Moriarty's head and pushed him off the roof to create the "Sherlock looking" body. Watson gets a quick look to authenticate that it was definitely Sherlock (along with the telephone call and asking him to keep watching him). Then Molly arranges for the body to be whipped away quickly before police can take over the scene. Then Mycroft and Lestrade manage the police cover up and after story. Sorted. Now bring on series 3....

applecrumbleandcream · 15/01/2012 23:30

Easylife, didn't we see Sherlock actually jump off the building though. He didn't look like he was pushing Moriarty off.

easylife73 · 15/01/2012 23:34

I think we saw someone who looked like Sherlock (which could have been Moriarty in the mask) fall, but if Sherlock was standing behind him it could still look like he jumped. Your eyes would automatically follow the falling body meaning Sherlock could have crouched down after the push. I don't see how he could have come out of the fall unscathed and able to switch bodies quickly enough, so the most logical conclusion is that it wasn't Sherlock who fell. Also, why bring up the idea of someone disguised as Sherlock earlier in the programme if not to use it later?

CaveMum · 15/01/2012 23:35

Further Twitter speculation - the cyclist gassed John with the Baskerville stuff, which means he saw what he expected to see - a dead Sherlock.

Did anyone spot the cameo that Mark Gattis referred to? I've no idea!
Also Moffat was tweeting about two tributes to the past which only true fans would spot. I've never read any Conan Doyle do dud anyone get them and what were they??!

CaveMum · 15/01/2012 23:37

And another thought, before I go to bed, was the "You are me" rooftop statement key?

applecrumbleandcream · 15/01/2012 23:37

Cavemum, who do you follow on twitter so I can read that?

CaveMum · 15/01/2012 23:40

Not following anyone in particular, just reading the Sherlock related tweets that are in the trending topics.

happyAvocado · 15/01/2012 23:41

I think Sherlock's brother felt guilty and helped him to create a very belieavable death scene.
There are a lot of magic tricks they could have used to make John believe that it was Sherlock who was jumping.

I am hoping that Moriarty isn't dead too and we are for more episodes of this amazing series next year Wink

mummymeister · 15/01/2012 23:47

Cannot understand when there are series that are absolute winners that the beeb doesnt work this out from all the focus groups and pre watchers they employ and just sort it out so that we get more than 3. This isnt a series its a brief interlude into the otherwise rubbish sunday evening watch whilst your ironing the school clothes tat. Mark Gattis is a genius - i would watch anything he is involved in writing. its about time we got play for today back (or am i just showing my age!! ) real well written watchable drama not made for an american market where every clue is spelt out and practically has an arrow over it. Oh well - back to my boxed set of the wire.

Punkatheart · 15/01/2012 23:56

Remember that Sherlock asked Watson to look at him...or at least the masked Moriarty that he believed to be him.

It's down to money partly - those episodes cost a lot, plus the schedules of very successful actors.....plus time taken to script something of quality. I would rather have small and great than Waterloo Road....

IveGotTightsOlderThanYouLove · 15/01/2012 23:57

I'll sign your Play for Today petition, mummymeister! :)

applecrumbleandcream · 16/01/2012 00:03

So if he threw moriarty over the roof wearing a SH mask, that means moriarty must be dead? Must stop thinking about it, my head hurts!!

givemushypeasachance · 16/01/2012 00:03

There is now 9 hours of wonderful Sherlock-ness in our world though; that's a nice solid, working day of Sherlocktasticness.

The series two DVD is out a week today - I want more commentaries and making-ofs!

Americans love this series too ;)

RustyBear · 16/01/2012 00:08

The cameo apparently was one of the old men in the Diogenes Club - Douglas Wilmer, who played Holmes in the 1965 BBC series.

applecrumbleandcream · 16/01/2012 00:08

Mushypeas, yes got mine pre ordered with Amazon already and the OST is out on the 30 too! They'll see me through the next 18 months. Smile

applecrumbleandcream · 16/01/2012 00:09

Thanks Rusty, was wondering about that.

LadyPeter · 16/01/2012 00:12

I know everyone's going on about BC's cheekbones but MF is troubling my dreams of late- who'd have thought he could be so dashing and sexy? Or is that just me??

Punkatheart · 16/01/2012 00:13

The Solitary Cyclist is the name of one Holmes adventure. Moriarty twisted his lip - The Man with the Twisted Lip (or something like that) and the journalist was red-headed...The Red-Headed League.....you could find endless references, some of which are not intended at all!

chippy47 · 16/01/2012 00:19

How did the assassins targeting SH's friends know he was dead and therefore not take out their targets? Apart from Dr W's who must have been near the scene of the fall?

givemushypeasachance · 16/01/2012 01:05

They had to "see him jump" so I guess there was thug A by the hospital with a mobile phone, ready to contact thugs B, C and D to say "yep, he's smushed into Sherlock paste, you can clock off and go home now".

I joke but it was a very brutally well-done fall and immediate aftermath. Molly has mad death faking skillz! /sticking to that theory/
