Anyone watching?

OP posts:
westcottcitizen · 21/12/2011 23:02

Well I live in the village. I think you're making judgements about the village based on a handful of twats. Most of us are lovely!

The lovely gardener is a friend of mine called Andy Honey. He encouraged people to help Richard. There is a group of people regularly helping Richard to clear his stuff, as well as a network of people supplying Richard with meals. It's very easy to say people should be helping, but I didn't even know who Richard Wallace was until a couple of years ago and I've lived round the corner from him for 14 years! He wasn't the most approachable person.

PregolaLola · 21/12/2011 23:21

if the gardeners full name wasn't shown on the programme itself i don't think you should have put it on here.

Bohica · 21/12/2011 23:23

I don't think any judgements were made on the village as a whole apart from how the programme portrayed the residents who took part.

It's great to hear that Richard is still receiving help with clearing his house and I'm glad to hear he is still getting more than cold dippy eggs to eat.

Can I have Andy's mobile number please??

westcottcitizen · 21/12/2011 23:31

PregolaLola - his full name was given on the programme, along with other details if you were watching carefully Wink

I think I'll keep his mobile number a secret! please believe me when I say the first few people interviewed were not a fair representation of most people here!

Bohica · 21/12/2011 23:34

Ohh a newbie who sussed the smiley faces by the second ever post impressive Xmas Hmm

westcottcitizen · 21/12/2011 23:36

I'm not a newbie - I name changed.

ZenPom · 21/12/2011 23:37

How is Richard doing now, westcottcitizen?

Is he being cared for over Christmas/ winter and is he managing to remove some of the clutter?

He and Andy were lovely.

FlamingoBingo · 21/12/2011 23:39

Westcottcitizen, if you are genuine, I don't think anyone criticised the village as a whole, just the unkind residents who cared more about the appearance of their village than about the seriously mentally ill man who lived on their doorstep. The pub landlord even went so far as to say that he thought people probably wouldn't be interested in helping someone if it was because he was mentally ill!

That councillor was awful, as well: 'I don't think I had the opportunity to meet with him'

westcottcitizen · 21/12/2011 23:44

Why would I not be genuine? I don't want to be recognised in real life that's all. Councillor is shifty yes, along with westcott in bloom man - glad they came across badly. Landlord prone to odd comments, but pub has since closed down.

Richard is being looked after by village - meals etc.. It was so overgrown, I didn't even realise there were 2 houses on that plot until it started to be cleared away.

Bohica · 21/12/2011 23:45

Ah that's cheating Smile.

Your meant to announce a name change and give examples of what you know to prove you are a name changer Grin

Is Richard doing ok? years ago I worked with a client who was a horder and he hated me visiting his home, kept himself to himself as much as he could.
It's easy to judge just seeing one programme and I must admit I felt quite sad watching it, glad to hear help is ongoing though.

Thanks for the update.

westcottcitizen · 22/12/2011 00:12

Sorry for not following name change rules. Been a member for years!
Help is ongoing from village. Slow progress. Just spoken to gardener - his phones are going crazy! He has had complete strangers ring him up and tell him he's lovely. Apparently was hot on twitter. People asking about follow up, so you never know!

Figgyrollsintoapudding · 22/12/2011 00:24

Are you Mrs Honey Westcottcitizen? I know someone who lives in Westcott and apparently in Bloom are a frigging nightmare, do all sorts that pisses people off. They weren't a very nice representation of the village at all tbh, but I believe there to be a fair few busybodies in the neighbourhood Xmas Wink

westcottcitizen · 22/12/2011 00:30

No not Mrs Honey!! Westcott in bloom are a bloody nightmare! They sweep down the streets tut tutting at gardens and generally irritating people.

Crikey I don't like this name changing lark, i'm terrified i'll be recognised - impossible I know.

CiderwithBuda · 22/12/2011 00:32

I thought Andy was lovely too. Richard did seem to want to clear the crap but needed help and encouragement which taking him to court didn't achieve but Andy did.

Westcottcitizen - tell him well done. He came across as very human an caring. Unlike sone others!

And yes the firemen were a lovely distraction!

MelinaM · 22/12/2011 01:11

I watched tooXmas Shock Fascinating programme, but I'm now feeling rather uneasy about the stack of magazines in the corner! Ekk!
I though Richard was lovely, I really hope he is able to live in his home again, him lighting that hob really frightened me! Andy was such a kind man for helping, and encouraging the other villages to do so tooXmas Smile

Agree that the 'In Bloom' director, and the various committee members are a rather selfish lot! I also thought that the vicar could have showed more compassion!

MollyintheMoon · 22/12/2011 01:20

I watched the beginning, up until the clinical psychologist said he needed to recognise he had a problem before he could be helped.

What was the conclusion? It made me claustrophobic just watching him crawl in to his kitchen. Sad

CowboysGal · 22/12/2011 01:29

Vicar confirmed to me all the negative impressions I have ever had about religion and those employed to spread the faith. Well done to all the villagers who Andy got to help out. Richard may always be a hoarder but at least he is now (hopefully) hoarding in a less life-threatening manner and has got some social bonds developing.

mrsjay · 22/12/2011 10:23

I know this has all been said but WOW @ the house poor man horrible hyacinth BUCKET villagers , I hope they get bronze next year , although maybe they tried to help him in years gone by perhaps the court case was the last straw,
I felt strange watching angry and sad for him at the same time , the phsycologist looked beaten and the landscaped gardener what a lovely decent man , IS it a series or was that a 1 off ?

meglet yes i remember mr trebus , life of grime did a catch up programme mr trebus was in a nursing home bless him ,

KalSkirata · 22/12/2011 10:38

glad most of the village are nice wescottcitizen. Andy was lovely and went that extra mile to make a connection then round up helpers. Its a pity the start was all the snobby residents.
I think neighbourliness works a whole sight better than some psychologist sputing 'you must recognise the problem' blah e blah

Methe · 22/12/2011 10:41

I just watched this and it made me cry! Richard and Andy both came across as lovely people I am so glad that Richard finally has someone to fight his corner against all the haters.

That Westcott in Blood bunch seemed a vile bunch. If people like that lived where I lived I'd make my garden as messy as possible too, just to piss them off!

Methe · 22/12/2011 10:43

*bloom

Although blood might be more apt

Sparklingbaubles · 22/12/2011 13:58

You were right the first time Methe Grin

ipodrage · 22/12/2011 14:17

Westcott, is Andy married? Just asking like.

thunderboltsandlightning · 22/12/2011 14:49

Did Richard get the inside of his house cleared out in the end Westcott? The way he was living was truly scary - one of the firemen appeared to be having a panic attack when he couldn't get out.

Andy was absolutely lovely, what a kind man. As were the rest of the neighbours who came to help.

nomorecake · 22/12/2011 15:21

Hoarding programs always remind me of Mr Trebus.
But i think Mr Trebus was worse than Richard.

I think the interviewed villagers and pub landlords views are not untypical. Some people are nervous about mental illness and more so of mental illness in a stranger.
It was so good to see people coming along to help though. i think that, and the on going support, showed the true spirit of that villages community.

i was really impressed that Richard represented himself in the court case and won.

I've seen the US hoarders show. its fascinating to watch, but heart breaking for the family members. And so often triggered by bereavement.

There was one guy in the US show, with a kitchen similiar to Richards, where the fire service deemed it too dangerous. When they went to turn the gas off in the basement, it was full of stuff, flooded and they noticed the ceiling (house's main floor) was caving in from the sheer weight of the things he had hoarded.
The local authority wouldn't let him move back in.
