New Masterchef Australia (2011 series??)

Anyone watching this?

Usually I don't watch Masterchef UK but this has me hooked. 14 contestants to go from a "shortlist" of 50. I think the series has finished now but they're showing it on Watch I think 4 times a week.

I can't be the only MNer watching?

It must finish next week?

ObviouslyLovesTinsel · 01/12/2011 23:04

Good episode tonight!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 01/12/2011 23:31

I thought so too. And the right result, though I did like the contestant who left. Btw - I assume we are being cryptic so as not to spoil it for people who haven't watched it yet.

LtEveDallas · 02/12/2011 07:00

I'm looking forward to Sundays episode. I can't be bothered to watch the masterclasses so I get withdrawal symptoms on Fridays and Saturdays!

Having to 'write a cookbook' sounds a really good challenge, especially for one of the girls who I don't think I've seen use a set of scales yet!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 02/12/2011 10:30

You are absolutely right about the masterclass episodes, LtEve - I tend to delete those too.

In one of the commercial breaks during this series, when they do the 'Watch - aussies boil etc etc' bit before the episode restarts, it said '..Watch New Zealanders boil etc etc' - which makes me wonder if there's a series of New Zealand Masterchef to come after the Aussie one finishes. I really hope that's the case - the withdrawal symptoms will be terrible when there's no more to watch ever! [slightly exagerating emoticon]

Foxinsocks · 02/12/2011 22:14

Yes be cryptic! I don't know who wins :-)

I dont think any of them appear as skilled as some of the winners of previous episodes but let's see!

icapturethecastle · 07/12/2011 23:35

The gingerbread house on tomorrow looks amazing love Adriano Zumbo. I was going to attempt one for christmas so may get some tips.

ObviouslyLovesTinsel · 08/12/2011 11:30

Just watched the Three Hat episode. WTF??? That should have been Kate's win. Michael has been unimpressive this week.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 08/12/2011 11:43

I agree - she did better in the kitchen, and her dish got all positive comments. I think they like Michael because he's a boy. I hope I am wrong.

LtEveDallas · 08/12/2011 11:53

I also agree - I think Kate is a much better all-rounder (even if her real love is desserts). Michael always seems to fall apart, and his vacant stare when people question what he is doing drives me mad - he looks so gormless!

Mind you, I think Kate should have just done the same dessert she did the day before (when Dani went). I think it looked more professional.

Babieseverywhere · 08/12/2011 15:21

Kate was robbed, she deserved the first place in the final. The judges have a soft spot for Michael but I have no idea why.

ObviouslyLovesTinsel · 08/12/2011 23:06

Yay! Go Kate go Kate :o

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 08/12/2011 23:56

Today's challenge was insane! Adriano Zumbo is a sugar coated sadist.

LtEveDallas · 09/12/2011 06:00

Did you notice that they didn't show Alana going home, nor do at 'What Alana is doing now' on her? They didn't do it for Jay either and I found a news report that said he'd thrown his teddies out his pram. I wonder if Alana was the same?

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 09/12/2011 10:52

Oooooh - you are right, LtEve - they didn't. I missed the news about Jay throwing his toys out of the pram, but Alana didn't seem like that sort of a person. Strange.

LucyEyelesbarrow · 09/12/2011 14:59

I'm pretty sure that there wasn't the "what they're doing now" catch up for the person leaving in third place in the other two series either.

It's because the filming and screening in Australia are so close together that there isn't any time for them to make plans before the final is shown. I think.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 09/12/2011 15:15

I hope that they show the previous two series sometime - I didn't watch those because I stupidly decided I wouldn't like the format, but having seen it, I love it, and am now kicking myself for my snobbery.

ObviouslyLovesTinsel · 09/12/2011 16:20

I watched series 2 and got hooked. I wonder if the final will be the same format as last year? It was quite harsh if I remember rightly.

ObviouslyLovesTinsel · 09/12/2011 19:06

Grrrr, just tuned in to watch the final and it's a flipping master class Angry

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 11/12/2011 18:19

Did you watch the masterclass, Obviously? I missed the beginning bit, where they were working in the kitchens of top restaurants, but the rest of it was pretty funny, actually. Kate and Michael got to be the presenters/judges, whilst George and the one who isn't Matt Moran or Mat Preston, did a Mystery Box challenge, with duck eggs as the mystery ingredient. They did some very good take-offs of the judges, and the judges did some good take-offs of the contestants too.

Then Michael and Billy cooked off against Matt Moran, in a Rocky Road challenge - Michael and Billy produced a sort of deconstructed Rocky Road that they, very accurately, titled 'Rocky Roadkill' - and Matt won with an even more deconstructed, but very beautiful dessert.

They got back the top 25 contestants, and it was very good - funny and a bit touching too.

ObviouslyLovesTinsel · 11/12/2011 21:39

Just watched it, it was good fun! Missed Hayden though?

LtXmasEve · 13/12/2011 05:57

Woohoo, whoop whoop the right person won (are we doing spoilers?) gotta say I didn't think that dessert was as hard as the gingerbread house, but hey, they did it!

Nice to see old contestants back as well - I'd forgotton how lovely looking Alvin was. I wonder how he's doing?

PanicMode · 13/12/2011 09:34

I think the right person won too, and agree that it didn't look nearly as hard as the gingerbread house......

What am I going to do with my evenings now!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 13/12/2011 09:39

I cheered and had a bit of a tear in my eye too when the winner was announced - definitely the right person, though they both did a trememdous job on that dessert, and I wouldn't have wanted to be the judges, trying to find little things to nitpick, in order to differentiate between the two of them.

I was also really glad when the runner up got offered the scholarship in whatsisface's (can't remember his name) restaurants, plus some money for living costs and a wage - that was tremendous.

To be fair, either of them would have been very worthy winners, and I suspect that they will both be able to launch careers in the food industry of the back of this competition. I just wish I lived in Australia, so I could go and eat at their restaurants. I will definitely be looking out for the winner's cookbook - I hope it's sold over here, but I suppose I could order it from Australia if I was willing to pay the postage (gulp).

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 13/12/2011 09:42

Oh - and regarding our empty evenings - I wonder if they will show any of the previous series again - I missed series 1 and 2 because I was stupidly convinced I wouldn't like the format, so turned my nose up at it (curses, curses). And I did see a reference to New Zealand's Masterchef, on one of the little 'Watch - Aussies boil...' bits that happened just before each segment restarted after the commercials iyswim - it said 'Watch Kiwis boil...' - so maybe we have got that to look forward to. >
