And the last episode of Season 1 is on before in case you need to remember what happened

OP posts:

What a complete and utter bastard Shane is.He's definately off my repopulating list now.

In some of the books I've read susie the zombies develop their physical skills gradually after their "re birth".

Melty · 05/11/2011 04:42

See, I was initially horrified, but the more I thought about it the more I wondered.
What would I do in that situation?
and if it was either me or Otis, I come first every time.
There was no way both of them were getting out alive.
They were out of ammo, Shane was limping, Otis (bless his soul ) wasn't very speedy.
And those walkers were a bit too smart/speedy/or a plot device.
I think he ought to have shot him in the head, but maybe that would be just a step too far.
He could almost say to himself that he didn't kill Otis, just slowed him down, and the walkers got him.
Yes, semantics, but he was clearly tortured.

Although , not too impressed with the shower scene, seriously, if dropping Otis wasnt enough of abuse of hospitality, you are now going to waste all that hot waterwhile making faces in the mirror.

somewherewest · 05/11/2011 05:27

Some (over) analysis Grin...

I like the show because its really about how people cope with prolonged terror and suffering (the zombies are almost incidental). It asks quite how far they will go to survive, hence Shane using Otis for zombie bait. Shane's definitely the most complex and interesting character at the moment. In ordinary life he was probably no worse than most people, but in a survival situation he's ultimately prepared to do very dark things. I suspect that might be true of a lot of us if we were ever really up against it.
Why are all the women so whiney / drippy / just plain annoying? I had high hopes for the baseball-bat-wielding newcomer but she's been reduced to making coffee and patronising Glen (who probably doesn't need a complete stranger's permission to believe in God).
I know its a deeply existential gesture of penance blah blah but I like Shane's new haircut.
Dale really needs to back off from Andrea. Its getting a bit weird. It would be good to have some back story to explain the relationship (which is apparently sexual in the comics Shock....any port in a storm I guess? Grin).
I don't get why hoardes of zombies haven't descended on the farm either. You'd think the people would at least board up the windows and post a lookout. It also seems to have an inexhaustible supply of coffee / sandwiches / electricity / water for Shane to waste being angst-ridden in the shower.
I'm beginning to get the Daryl fetish. Its interesting how hostile he is to people who 'opt out'. Is it a born suvivor's inability to understand why some people just give up or does he have a suicide-related back story (its noticeable that he doesn't mention his mother when talking about his childhood...I wonder if he lost her to suicide as a child and is still angry about it)?
I want to see Egg being bad ass again, because I have a crush on him it would be good for his character development.
Finally, where the hell is Sophia? How big is that wood? I think they'll find her either zombified or with other survivors.

AWimbaWay · 05/11/2011 09:18

Good plot development, the writers can now make Shane really unhinged. I did wake up at 5am with the image of poor Otis in my head though which was a bit disconcerting.

I don't think Shane could just kill Otis, do the Zombies go for dead bodies? I thought they liked to eat people alive, so he just had to make it impossible for Otis to escape.

When discussing Shane's tactics with my husband he said he thinks we'd all have done the same in the circumstances. I'm not sure I would, but then as I pointed out I'm far too lazy to have survived this far anyway, I'd have been enjoying zombiehood long ago.

uniCorny · 05/11/2011 09:27

where did they get the thick sliced white from to make Egg's sandwhich?
dh kept shouting about the blood as well...until he realised he didn't actually remember what his own blood group was. Also would you want to be out of action/weak for someone else's child in the middle of the zombie apocalypse?
Shane is an utter bastard. He also lied to Egg's wife about Egg being dead. I think he will get rid of Egg if he can...

Eggrules · 05/11/2011 10:54

Melty I was Confused about hot water wastage too Grin

The house should be defended. Anyhoo - off to read book 2; I simply can't wait...

susiedaisy · 05/11/2011 11:17

What book are you reading egg

anonacfr · 05/11/2011 11:50

Well didn't Shane have a moment and nearly shot Egg in the woods last season?

Shane is inherently selfish. He loves Egg but if there was a situation where he could get rid of him and claim Lori and Carl as his he would jump on it.

Talking about what people would do in given situations- I think your true nature comes out. Shane was an arsehole pre-Apocalypse (remember his bratty conversation about women in the pilot?) and in this new world his faults come out.
He was abusive to Lori when they were shagging and v dismissive of the rest of the group. He was happy for them to camp in an unprotected wood and whenever someone had suggestions to improve safety he would shoot them down cos 'he was the boss'.

In last night's situation notice that not for one second did Otis think of doing what Shane did.
Otis came back for him when they left the school and yet Shane was rather calm about apologising and shooting him in the leg. I don't buy it was a panic reaction- he spent ages getting the rest of the medical supplies to make sure he could help Carl. It was a calculated planned gesture on his part- imagine if he had got back to the farm to find Carl dead though? That would have been awesome.

As it is this piece of shit is going to be a bona fide hero and everyone is going to worship him.

susiedaisy · 05/11/2011 11:59

anon good post, I do think Shane will get his comeuppance in the end, in the opening scene of first series when shane and rick were chatting in the cop car about women my first thought regarding shane was that he was a make chauvinist pig, Angry

somewherewest · 05/11/2011 12:38

I don't think Shane is an utter bastard. He did offer at one point to stay behind so that Otis could make a run for it. And he did go the school in the first place, knowing that it was possibly a suicide mission. He tried to get Rick out of the hospital, and if he hadn't lied to Rick's wife I don't think she or her son would've got out in time. I think he has a genuine love / hate relationship with Rick and does really care about Carl. Yes he's sexist (although he gets bonus points in my book for sorting out Carl's husband) and can be very calculatingly selfish, but he's not a monster. I think he is now in shock at what he's capable off. I hope Shane doesn't become zombie chow - he's too interesting as a character.

anonacfr · 05/11/2011 13:23

I guess it depends on your definition of monster.
He did tell Otis to make a run for it but once he made his decision that was it.

I can't imagine any of the others doing what he did. I still think they could have both made it.

Incidentally apparently in the comics Shane dies v early on, shot byt Carl of all people!

He does make an interest character though.

Eggrules · 05/11/2011 13:43

Susie I am reading Book 2 of the Walking Dead comic/graphic novel

Love to hate Shane here

SHRIIIEEEKPoolingBearBlood · 05/11/2011 15:06

I am up to anonacfr Mon 31-Oct-11 20:18:24
and can't believe I haven't seen this thread so far.
Not watched last night's yet, could someone please tell me how far I can read before I spoil it for myself?
The thing that's struck me was that all the adults seem very careless with the children, just letting them wander round finding zombies - when Carl found those knives etc on the zombie in the car how long had he been out of an adult's sight? Hmm
Daryl wasn't ever racist, was he, just his brother? and despite his bother being a vile racist thug I was still hoping he would be rescued :(

SHRIIIEEEKPoolingBearBlood · 05/11/2011 15:10

OK think I stop now :) - can my willpower manage it? Is the 3rd episode going to be a good one? Do we need to get the kids to bed early and watch with popciorn?

SHRIIIEEEKPoolingBearBlood · 05/11/2011 15:19

OK just learned something I really shouldn't have :( will STOP reading now

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 05/11/2011 15:37

My Sky+ failed Sad. So I haven't read any of your posts for a few days, will hopefully catch up somehow and be back.

countessbabycham · 05/11/2011 20:05

Another one who sat announcing "at least turn the bloody shower off" Grin
I was also concerned about the water spraying out and making a mess - it seems he was rather remiss in pulling the shower curtain across correctly from what I recall.....

It didn't seem to me that they were that far away from the truck (by the way - I WANT that truck!).I reckon in the time it took for Shane to deal with Otis they could both had escaped - I think Shane just wanted to make it easy on himself. He didn't behave like a real man and I'm afraid in the apocalypse I'd only be interested in real men - courageous enough to look after little ol' me while I'm busy tending the campfire and sending the kids off to play on the freeway with the zombies!!

Do we think the farmhouse will be attacked in Ep 4? I think it's high time......

ILovePonyo · 05/11/2011 21:50

I've just watched episode 3 Shock Well well. After reading a spoiler I knew what happened with Shane and Otis, but didn't know I'd have to wait the whole episode to see it, or that poor Otis nearly made it! Thought Shane was acted brilliantly, esp when back at the farm house.

Can I also mention that the scene last week with the baby seat in the car has really stuck with me :( When Egg and Lori were talking about whether they wanted Carl to survive all I could think about was dd - I was pg when watching series 1 and didn't/couldn't relate to it as a parent.

Yes to the farm house getting attacked next week, its got to happen hasn't it?! I read next weeks review in the guardian guide - it says it is a good week to be Glenn Grin about time too!

anonacfr · 05/11/2011 21:55

It also says that 'show stealing' Daryl is obsessed with finding Sophia.
I hope he does!

I knew Shane was responsible for Otis' death from his reaction at the v beginning of the episode and when he arrived back at the farmhouse but to see him shooting Otis in cold blood and then angrily beating him down and taking his gear and the way Otis was literally torn to pieces in front of his very eyes.... It was so awful.

Melty · 05/11/2011 21:57

Read another recap of ep 3, talking about Lori and her thoughts on the choices left to Carl if he survives.
EW.com recap
"Maybe this isn't a world for children anymore." She mapped out Carl's two possible future: Death-by-zombie, or a life lived in fear.
If Carl reaches adulthood, he'll be a dude with a fourth-grade education with a trail of corpses behind him. (He'll basically be Daryl Dixon.)

It tickled me. Grin

ILovePonyo · 05/11/2011 22:13

I didn't think it would be that brytal either anon - I really thought they could have both made it, optimistic perhaps. It just seemed so calculated :(

Grin at that review Melty, nothing wrong with turning out like Daryl - maybe Carl does have a use after all Wink

ILovePonyo · 05/11/2011 22:13

brytal Hmm brutal obviously

countessbabycham · 05/11/2011 22:19

I would very much like to see Shane zombiefied in a hideous, graphic and bloodthirsty way, perhaps in a sustained and violent attack on the farmhouse.

Melty · 05/11/2011 22:31

I don't like Shane. I haven't liked him from the beginning.
However, Rick is very goody goody, tries to do the right thing,is the wronged man etc etc so we need someone who is a lot darker to balance it. (I like Rick, but I wonder if some of that has to do with my residual fondness for Egg back in the day Smile ).
Shane has a lot of layers. I don't think he is evil, but he is very complex.
So I don't want him zombiefied yet. But I wouldn't object if he had a good beating. (I'm really not a very nice person, am I? )

I also think they are heading towards an Andrea/Dale thing. (In the book, they are a couple, but it will squick me out a bit if it happens here. I get much more of a father/daughter vibe from them)

Still love Daryl. He Gets Things Done.

countessbabycham · 05/11/2011 22:33

Lets assume that at some point the survivors position in the farmhouse will be compromised. What would you do next?Wherabouts are they geographically in the USA?

Would you go back up and push along the freeway with the Winnebago thingie or take to horses or a convoy of smaller vehicles?
