Bloody mum rang to ask me about how much Internet she can use before it's full. Don't ask.

Why did bates have to leave?? Aaargh missed crucial bit!

I think she hasn't denied it because she enjoyed it. I do agree that it borders on rape though... which was, I would imagine, far more common back then, I get the impression that a woman wasn't really allowed to say no yet it is always her disgrace/fault.

harrietthespook · 22/09/2011 10:56

I think a couple of thigns about Pamuk incident are freaky

  1. He's not her 'lover' - he behaved awfully towards her, completley took advantage. Esp after that horrible grope in the hallway too. Very bizarre 'No means yes' scenario going on. He's a scumbag.

  2. Why hasn't she ever wondered HOW he found her room in the first place? Who gave him directions? Wonder if the scrutiny will ever turn to Thomas' role in the whole affair.

  3. Anna is remarkably unpreturbed by the whole situation. Contrast to Daisy, falling to pieces and sparking Edith's misdeeds.

SoupDragon · 22/09/2011 10:59

When he died, was he on top of her? In my memory he was and they were in the standard missionary position, not ideal for up the bum.

ripstheirthroatoutliveupstairs · 22/09/2011 11:01

Must ask DH to bring the set back with him when he arrives tomorrow to check that theory soup.
Do you think it possible that he had a really long snakey turkish cock that was super bendy?

LeBOF · 22/09/2011 11:05

He might have just been doing that rub-it-between-your-legs thing, I suppose, or some other Dark Art of sex. The whole depiction of him struck me as faintly racist actually- you know, swarthy type into Unnatural Acts...

SoupDragon · 22/09/2011 11:07

"please bring the Downton Abbey DVDs with you... I need to ascertain whether Mary and Pamouk were indulging in the dark arts of bumsex"

LOL

Georgimama · 22/09/2011 11:10

I had assumed it was just oral.

SoupDragon · 22/09/2011 11:13

Funnily enough, so did I until Mumsnet. Hmm

Georgimama · 22/09/2011 11:19

Why are we thinking bumsex? Is it just because MNers are all obsessed with bumsex or is it because he was a foreign wrongun and bound to know Dark Sex Arts (as presumed by Thomas when he tried to stroke his face*)?

  • that bit annoyed me. OK Thomas had an affair with that Duke bloke from the first episode but there's no way Thomas would make the first move in real life on an aristo. Man bumsex was illegal, he'd have gone to prison if found out.
diddl · 22/09/2011 11:40

I agree-a male servant making a pass at another man of a "higher class"-or any man at all that he´d only just met!

Actually, the more I think about it, it´s actually a load of crap & I think I´m going to defect to Spooks.

Georgimama · 22/09/2011 11:46

diddl, let us just view it on a level as a plot mechanism to allow the Turkish bloke to twist Thomas's arm to show him the way to Mary's room. Much as I have Harry love, Spooks is way beyond its prime (mind you I infinitely preferred Adam to Lucas).

harrietthespook · 22/09/2011 11:51

Diddl you can't flounce now! Edith's havin a snog next week.

diddl · 22/09/2011 12:00

Ooh- I might be tempted thenGrin

I predict that Mary thinks she still has a chance with Matthew.

The newspaper guy proposes, she´s not sure, so he tells her that if she refuses, the "scandal" will be published.

diddl · 22/09/2011 12:01
harrietthespook · 22/09/2011 12:03

I like that in a man - securing a bride by threat.

Georgimama · 22/09/2011 12:05

Wasn't newspaper guy threatening Lavinia in the trailer for next week? Or was it Mary?

I Mary and Matthew and actually cried when she waved him off at the station, all artificial brightness and "such luck!" in fabulously clipped tones. "You send me off to war a happy man" .

ripstheirthroatoutliveupstairs · 22/09/2011 12:13

Sorry if I've lowered the tone and suggested that forriners are the only type who like back door action.
I haven't seen a trailer for next week. If only DH was in Thailand, I could have watched them all by now [not that I condone piracy]

LeBOF · 22/09/2011 12:16

Oh no, not you Rips- the script. But it's very in keeping with attitudes of the aristocracy of the day, I think. I have researched the period extensively via End Blyton.

Georgimama · 22/09/2011 12:20

Ooh no not your fault - the Turkish bloke himself said English people think things about foreign types; it is consistent with the times they were in.

I also love that (hope actor in question does not extensively google himself) the Matthew chap is not ludicrously good looking in mould of Colin Firth in P&P. He's a nice looking chap but not head turning. Makes the whole thing more believable I suppose (P&P does have a slight fantasy element in this regard - so you're a bored second daughter in a small provincial town and then suddenly these exciting London types decided to rent the only other big house in the area and bring the best looking man in the whole world to stay and immediately fall over themselves to become acquianted. Chances of? Remote)

missmogwi · 22/09/2011 12:26

Grin at Dark Arts sex.

OP posts:
harrietthespook · 22/09/2011 12:31

I really can't wait until someone wants to know 'What Mumsnetters think about Downton Abbey.' Will serve them right when they find this on google.

Oh I think Matthew is much better than C Firth. And I don't normally go for blondes.

I think this debate is going to get HOTTER than who's worse - mary or edith.

Pinot · 22/09/2011 12:36

Pamuk died sleeping next to Mary after the deed was done. She awoke to find him dead lying face up next to her.

Georgimama · 22/09/2011 12:37

No they were still mid whatevers I think - she said to Anna and her mum that he was fine and then cried out and then he was dead. And Cora did say "did he force himself upon you" and Mary shook her head.

Anna is unperturbed because she is super Anna.

missmogwi · 22/09/2011 12:37

Nooo I much prefer Colin as Mr Darcey. Swoon.

Although I do like the new more aloof Matthew.

Swoon and aloof; two words I didn't expect to be using today. Grin

I thought he died at the point of CLIMAX
