CheerfulYank · 10/10/2011 13:21

Matthew will not die! Bite your tongue! Shock

diddl · 10/10/2011 13:27

"So Ethels boy will inherit Dowton"

Wouldn´t have been allowed.

2BoysTooLoud · 10/10/2011 13:31

Edith pregnant by farmer??

Avantia · 10/10/2011 13:33

It's ficton ! Grin

Avantia · 10/10/2011 13:35

Ok - Mary and Mathew get married he can't father nay children due to war injures - THEY adopt Ethels baby and at some stage the baby will inherit Dowton Grin

diddl · 10/10/2011 13:40

Still wouldn´t work-adopted children couldn´t inherit.

It was all about it staying in the family-that´s why women couldn´t inherit I assume, as when they married it went to the husband & therefore out of the family.

Avantia · 10/10/2011 13:45

Damn !

Bates and Anna will adopt the baby !

vicks71 · 10/10/2011 14:09

I thought that they could have had Matthew and William missing in action for one episode at least. Mary had barely heard he was missing before he was back, singing alongside her (that reminded me of The Sound of Music too!)

I like the Sybil/Branson pairing but even I agree that he's being a bit of a dick at the moment. The actor (Allen Leech) tweeted that there was another scene just before the concert where Branson apologised for what he said about her work as a nurser. Shame it got cut. I think that there are a few of their scenes (as I'm sure there are of all the other characters too) that got cut - but that would have shown us a bit more about the closeness between them, and her feelings. But they got cut, so all we have to go on is what we've seen

diddl · 10/10/2011 14:09

Edith was good at the beginning wasn´t she?

"You mustn´t blame her"

"I don´t!".

Papyrus · 10/10/2011 14:12

Allen Leech (Branson) said on twitter that they cut a scene where Branson apologised to Sybil for his comment about her nursing. Apparently it was just before the concert which explains why they are standing next to each other.

I get the impression many scenes have been cut, which is why the series seems to be going at breakneck speed and some story lines are not making much sense!

Papyrus · 10/10/2011 14:21

x-post with Vicks!

ThePsychicSatsuma · 10/10/2011 14:37

its interesting... perhaps JF thought we should perceive pickle as a bastard, where as he may turn out to save everyone

harrietthespook · 10/10/2011 14:42

He seems to be writing the show as if it were a posh Coronation Street and he did have 52 weeks to get it all across. It's such a shame - there are some great ideas there, but no time to develop.

ThePsychicSatsuma · 10/10/2011 14:51

in order of favourite, my characters are

  1. my favourite character is...Mary. Posh totty with a dirty secret.
  2. followed by edith, bitter, jealous, yet growing into a nice young lady
  3. O'Brien. those dulcet Yorkshire tones. i find myself speaking as she does more and more
  4. Mrs H..~? scottish housekeeper. I want her for my maiden Aunt
  5. Sybil - throaty feisty feminist wonderful gal.
  6. Violet - gets all the best lines. doesnt care what she says.

my worsts are

  1. Master Bates to moonheaded jowly old codger
  2. Cora. wide eyed ameriglish speaking twit
  3. Thomas. actually he is too vampiric and just sits, broods, smokes. yawn.
10. officer moustachio, seducer of ginger housemaid. get back to the front, you dog
anonacfr · 10/10/2011 16:02

That tweet about Pickles apologising confirms my worst fears that we're meant to be rooting for him and Sybil and hope they elope.

They should really edit the show better. At the moment all I see is a patronising stalker who keeps telling Sybil how to think.
'I'll stay until you run away with me/you're in love with me/leaving your life and friends is a detail, only our lurve matters'.

He's so bullying her.

limitedperiodonly · 10/10/2011 16:24

psychic agree with your worst list. I do like the insult 'twit'.

I'd add Carson. I hate Carson and Lord G is a bewildered dolt.

diddl · 10/10/2011 16:36

Tbh, I don´t get why Thomas in charge of the staff.

If he´s in charge of the hospital & still in the pay of the army?

dapplegrey · 10/10/2011 16:52

Northernlurker - yes, I agree that nothing about that terrible, terrible war should ever be glossed up. In fact, I am surprised that by the end of it every man, woman and child in Europe and beyond had not become pacifists (though I know there was powerful support for pacifism).

Also, as several posters have pointed out, as a junior officer Matthew would have had a miniscule chance of surviving - but I suppose some did, so it was possible. I don't think he'll last out the war unharmed, though.

However, I thought poor Lang was well done - a broken man for whom the future was bleak. There must have been plenty like him.

dapplegrey · 10/10/2011 16:55

diddl - I'm also confused about why Thomas is in charge of the staff. Maybe he's in charge of them when they are helping with the convalescents as that's his territory. However he can't be in charge of them when they are looking after the family.

Biscuitsandtea · 10/10/2011 16:57

I think you're right about Thomas - in charge of the staff if they're looking after the patients. Also I think it is the fact that he is there but now under the command of Carson et al any more that's they're making a thing out of?

diddl · 10/10/2011 17:02

I mean if Thomas is in charge, why was Mosely allowed to work there without Thomas being asked?

And when will Cora wise up to bloody O´Brien?

And why wasn´t Matthew curious about Isobel going off to France-w
especially when he was expected back?

And why does he get so much leave?

Biscuitsandtea · 10/10/2011 17:06

All excellent points. Cora's O'Brien-blindness I find particularly baffling.

That and Matthew's constant flitting from the front to Yorkshire?

I do find it a bit odd though that there are supposed to be months between the episodes, up to a year, but nothing seems to have happened in the meantime.

I mean that moustachioed officer (who was boffing the maid) has been convalescing for ever! And Sir Richard proposed to Mary last year yet she hasn't given him an answer yet? See the only thing that does fit if there is a year between episodes is that those are the only times Matthew comes home!

Jacksterbear · 10/10/2011 17:10

Agree re timing Biscuits, also Maggie Smith and Mary talking about Lavinia as if the previous episode had only just happened.

Unless the previous episode, which opened in 1917, was meant to have taken place over a period of many months, ending in 1918 when the latest episode started?

diddl · 10/10/2011 17:11

So-will Richard use what he knows to make sure that Mary marries him and use his influence to keep it out of the media?

Or he doesn´t marry her & this is how M&M get back together?

What is going on downstairs that Cora needs to see???Shock

Pentagram · 10/10/2011 17:12

oooh if Isobel dies either in the war or from flu out there - it will all be Cora's fault - that could be juicy....
