Bloody mum rang to ask me about how much Internet she can use before it's full. Don't ask.

Why did bates have to leave?? Aaargh missed crucial bit!

Shock at some of you!

I think Lady Edith will crash the car and die. There doesn't seem to be any way the plot could develop for her. (Not a screenwrite though so I will probably be proved wrong!)

I read an interview with Daniel Craig saying that he thought he was 'too blonde' to be a popular 007. He is by far the best and hottest Bond.

diddl · 22/09/2011 14:22

"There doesn't seem to be any way the plot could develop for her."

But I think that you could say that about any of them other than Matthew as the heir & Mary-will they marry?

limitedperiodonly · 22/09/2011 14:23

Does that car go fast enough for a fatal crash? I suppose she could get brained with the cranking iron when a bid to prove herself as good as any man goes sadly, but inevitably, wrong.

I like Daniel Craig as 007 too but the bright blue eyes overcome his dishwatery colouring. Possibly, there are other physical attributes that swing it.

Georgimama · 22/09/2011 14:28

Daniel Craig is James Bond.

Can we get back to discussing the mechanics of Pamuk's untimely end? (I did snarf at the bit in the first season - I have only recently watched it - when Mary was telling Carson that "one minute everything seems so golden" and then its all crap. I wonder if that was what they were up to).

Actually HQ - we need Lord Fellowes on for a webchat pretty please. We need to know from the horse's mouth.

harrietthespook · 22/09/2011 14:32

And you're the one bristling at the word climax

PortBlackSandWitchIsThere · 22/09/2011 14:32

Am i the only one who thought when he said "you will still be a virgin on your wedding night" he meant it in a nudge nudge wink wink type of way - as in who will know but me and you??

diddl · 22/09/2011 14:33

That´s also a possibility.

And if she wasn´t-what would her husband do?

missmogwi · 22/09/2011 14:36

He wouldn't be able to hang the bedsheet from the window. Grin

OP posts:
Georgimama · 22/09/2011 14:36

I don't get this whole "virgin on your wedding night" thing. How would her supposed first know? I didn't bleed the first time I had sex.

AKMD · 22/09/2011 14:39

Tru diddl, but with Edith it just seems like all she does is be mean to Mary and drive. That is her existence and place in the plot. Mary at least has a scandal and a love story going on!

Limited I don't think they had seatbelts in those days so it would be very easy for her to get thrown through the windscreen een if she had hit something at only 20mph.

I also thought that Pamuk just meant it would be their little secret. f mary's husband found out, he could divorce her pretty easily if he chose to.

harrietthespook · 22/09/2011 14:40

Oh I did. (There I was trying to act so experienced...)

Georgimama · 22/09/2011 14:41

Well I'd have been up shit creek back in the day then, if it was expected.

PortBlackSandWitchIsThere · 22/09/2011 14:46

Another thought - would Matthew just be able to take a wife without asking Lord G's permission? and even if he could, would he? Especially since she isn't aristocracy and would be Lady G one day...seems a bit unrealistic (although she is clearly just a plot device and not the love of his life Grin)

AKMD · 22/09/2011 14:49

To whoever it was earlier in the thread who loved Lavinia's dress sense: Really?! I thought she looked like she was wearing a shapeless green sack with her headband slipping down her face but oh well. She is clearly not as sweet and lovely as she makes out - note the glance back at Lady Mary during the concert.

diddl · 22/09/2011 14:59

Well I like the interaction between the sisters & the differences.

Without Edith the scandal wouldn´t have become known about maybe.

I would have thought that Matthew can marry who he wants.

I assume that he is the heir "without strings" iyswim as an heir produced by Lord & Lady G would have been.

WhipMeIndiana · 22/09/2011 15:08

lavinias a closet gay- fancies mary too?
ends up in mary/lavinia room, then matthew joins in

WhipMeIndiana · 22/09/2011 15:09

with the shots of profile of mary cora and lavinia I noticed how much the casting team like the female 'short nose'

WhipMeIndiana · 22/09/2011 15:11

mary is well cast to be cora's daughter to be sure.

the butler guy and the scottish housekeeper make a lovely pair.

the cook annoys me- are her eyes all fixed now?

thomas is handsome but do think matthew is gorgeous and pale eyes lovely

WhipMeIndiana · 22/09/2011 15:12

agree hidden depths to lavinia - secrets which will explode the engagement and leave matthew free again, prob. just as mary about to marry the newspaper guy...

FancyForgetting · 22/09/2011 15:24

I found Lord G's lack of curiosity re Mary quite plausible - if he doesn't know, he won't have to deal with it.

He strikes me as benevolently complacent, hoping that either Mary marrying Matthew or Cora having another child would sort out the inheritance with minimal fuss, upset by not having an active part in the war but still doing the right thing, allowing his mother to rule the roost still etc etc. He also dislikes his sister making waves, putting ideas in the girls' heads.

It struck me that when Things Change after the war, as Branson said they would, Lord G will struggle most because he is already living in a past in an idealised version of his family and his world which doesn't exist.

ScatterChasse · 22/09/2011 15:31

I think Edith's going to enjoy the war, with the driving and women being needed more, I think she'll become much more independent and interesting.

I'm feeling quite sorry for Mary, everybody else seems to have plans and she's rather left dangling without Matthew. That newspaper man looks far to old for her, she's about twenty five or so isn't she?

AKMD · 22/09/2011 15:33

Downton Abbey itself will definitely have to open up as overflow from the hospital. I'm quite surprised it hasn't been requisitioned already, as it's 1916.

limitedperiodonly · 22/09/2011 15:34

25? She's on the shelf. The best thing she can hope for is that Carson regularly takes her down and gives her a good polishing.

diddl · 22/09/2011 15:36

"I think Edith's going to enjoy the war, with the driving and women being needed more,"

Yes I agree that she might become interesting.

It´s odd that Mary, who seemed determined/strong willed seems to be waiting about for Matthew something to happen.

I also think the newspaper guy looks old-funny as she made such a fuss about the guy that Edith liked being old.

TipOfTheSlung · 22/09/2011 15:39

He's Tom Branson btw
