Yay Smile

I loved series 1

OP posts:

Wow, Holly looks a lot younger than she is. I keep jumping when she talks about her kids, she looks the spit of one of my students.

I like Mary Berry in her usual mode - not too up herself. Delia comes across as smug whenever I've seen her, and her recipes are failsafe but pretty boring.

TheDailyWail · 21/09/2011 11:57

I have a similar sort of chaotic aura about me as Jo. I love her!

I'm quite pleased that they're in the semi finals (Jason should have been there too though).

I have a feeling it will be either Janet or Jo who will be leaving next week.

LRDTheFeministDragon · 21/09/2011 12:01

Jo slightly scares me. DH reckons she has Rob's body in her freezer at home and is eyeing up Paul Hollywood for the same treatment.

midnightexpress · 21/09/2011 12:15

Holly's so prissy. I bet her house is super clean and tidy. Bet she'll win though. I Hope Mary-Anne wins though.

Janet's mad stary eyes are fascinating.

Has anyone bought the book? I was looking at it in the supermarket this morning and it looks quite good. Though I need another cookery book like a hole in the head.

FancyForgetting · 21/09/2011 12:18

Interesting, LRD. I assumed that it was a rabbit-in-headlights thing with Jo, now if you'd said Holly...Smile

Next week's Radio Times says 'it's quite a surprise which of the contestants Paul and Mary Berry eventually decide to send home'.

Which could mean anything! I think that's why I like the programme so much - no 'cooking for the Pope amd £100.000 TV deal' type prize and apparently genuine camaraderie between contestants, judges and presenters. And the eliminations do seem to be on merit - sad as I was to see Jason go, I was glad he wasn't kept in just so they didn't send the last two chaps out at the same time as I suspect might happen on some shows.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 21/09/2011 13:06

Sorry to come to this thread so late - but I've been enjoying GBBO this year - for some reason, I missed most of it last year, only seeing the final episode, and now I'm kicking myself for missing it (though I have got the book).

I agree that tea at Mary Ann's would be a wonderful experience, and I wish she was my friend. I wonder if MNHQ could get her in for a web chat?

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 21/09/2011 13:11

Just thought about this as I went to grab a quick snack (this thread has made me hungry) - I bet MNHQ would ask her for a webchat, if only because she'd probably come laden with baked goodies! WinkGrin

TwoIfBySea · 21/09/2011 14:01

If it's going to be a surprise then it'll be Mary Ann. Have sky+ed this to watch later as was out last night.

Have to say totally uninspired now. Think Jo should have gone long ago, consistently much worse than Jasmin but I'll need to wait and see last night of course. Still it is really disappointing and my dts (age 9) could bake better than some of them. Like I said, there is no competition when everyone is so bland!

Last year there was only super-duper mummy Miranda who was so smug you just wanted to stick her head in the cake mix. Ruth and Edd were really good and I've seen Edd's recipes now in a couple of magazines.

This year...I don't know where they're finding them from. Are they Britain's best bakers in their own house? I don't know. Think the guys got a rough deal this year round.

And what is it with Janet going googly eyes all the time! Jeez woman you look like you're about to have a stroke.

That is all.

bigTillyMint · 21/09/2011 14:11

If Janet looks like she's going to have a stroke, then MA's been dead years Grin

Two, are you going in for it next year? Grin

FreeButtonBee · 21/09/2011 14:26

Agree Jason should still be in instead of Jo. I LUFFed him. And his cocktail-inspired macaroons were genius. Yum.

Love MA,

Holly is just too much the nicey nicey head girl at school who was lovely to everyone but probably has a voodoo doll (HM, natch) of the other contestants in the back of the wardrobe at home.

Love Janet, she makes me LOL so much. I imagine that the Duchess of Cornwall is a bit like her, a good old gel, up for anything. Bet she makes a mean G&T and a nice HM sausage roll to go with it. I giggled at the bit about serving portions of her cheesecake "That'd serve 12" "Not in my house, it wouldn't!"

TwoIfBySea · 21/09/2011 14:34

bigTilly I wouldn't kid myself to enter a competition like that and I certainly wouldn't want Paul and Mary pawing their way through my food. I like my baking too much and if it turns out wonky it is still edible!

Mary Ann should win now but probably won't. If Janet wins it'll be a joke.

SecretNutellaFix · 21/09/2011 14:36

I think Mary-Ann and Holly should definitely get through- I love them both. Jo and Janet I wouldn't mind who didn't get through.

Dumbledoresgirl · 21/09/2011 14:39

Purely based on personality, I would like to see Janet win. She is such a laugh and I love her attitude. My dd commented on her comical facial expressions last night and we both agreed she is probably a fantastic teacher.

Mary-Ann - lovely food but messing presentation which seems to matter in this show.

Jo - I am not convinced she has got through on merit, but simply because others have been worse than her. I still can't get over the fact she cheated with her pie. Shock

Holly - I think she is cracking tbh.

Have also made the chocolate roulade on many occasions and agree it is pretty easy actually, but then I like getting cracks and thought they all looked scrumptious last night. The croquembouches on the other hand.....

MaryAnnSingleton · 21/09/2011 15:07

have just been looking at an independent gbbo page and all the contestants seem to blog and are on twitter - Mary Anne,Janet, Yasmin and Salty Dog - go and see !

bigTillyMint · 21/09/2011 16:42

Link please Grin

peachsmuggler · 21/09/2011 18:00

Slightly off subject, though they did make cheesecakes last night!, is there any such thing as a silicon cuff type thing to put a springform cheesecake in while it's in it's water bath so the water doesn't get in. I used about a metric ton of foil (my fault as should have got wide version) on mne this afternoon and even now don't know if the base survived undrowned as is still setting in fridge.

MaryAnnSingleton · 21/09/2011 18:21

OMG ! salty dog has replied to my tweet !!

MaryAnnSingleton · 21/09/2011 18:23

here's a link to the site

peachsmuggler · 21/09/2011 18:32

What did he say? What did he say?????

MaryAnnSingleton · 21/09/2011 18:37

I asked him if he ever made chollah (which I love and make) and whether therer is such a thing as artisan chollah - he said of course there is...

peachsmuggler · 21/09/2011 18:39

Wow! I always assumed these slebs/artisan bakers never replied to tweets!!!

Btw, what is chollah?

HazeltheMcWitch · 21/09/2011 19:16

Wow, get you, chatt8ing with the lovely S-Dog!

Talking of artisan bakers who reply (not a sentence I've ever written before), i LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE Dan Lepard, and he always replies, in a really kind and generous way, to comments on HIS SITE. I love him.

Very excited that he has a new book out next month.

HazeltheMcWitch · 21/09/2011 19:17

chatt8ing chatting

MaryAnnSingleton · 21/09/2011 19:29

will look at Dan Lepard now ! Chollah is a plaited (usually) Jewish bread, sweetish and enriched with eggs and honey -I am addicted to it !

peachsmuggler · 21/09/2011 19:30

OMG that sounds lovely. Care you stick up your recipe if you have time, or is it top secret and you're entering with it next year!!!
